The official story is he hates flying and the travel became too much for him. Of course that seems strange since one assumes he knew he would need to fly before he took the job. Not to mention he spent 30 years as a newspaper reporter and tv personality traveling via airplane to cover stories.

Most people see that as a face-saving excuse because Kornheiser was horrible and nobody wanted him to stay. He even said in an interview that he heard some ESPN execs weren't too happy with him.

Gruden was hired by the NFL Network to cover the draft. I watched Kiper but I heard Gruden did a great job. ESPN saw him as a future star so they jumped at the chance to ditch Korny and hire Gruden. That's more or less it.

A little off topic, but why did Kornheiser leave MNF? Never got that story.

I was trying to keep politics out of this discussion but your point is a good one. I admit I voted for Obama so this isn't Rush Limbaugh Jr. speaking but I believe it is true that part of the media making a bigger deal out of this than they should is because they have an almost ridiculous reverence for our new President.

Right on! And believe me, if there was a Republican in the White House, Harrison would be hailed by the Post-Gazette as a real American for dissing a Republican and the PG would further criticize that GOP president for wasting his time with the Super Bowl champs instead of ending the war and fixing the economy. Maybe Obama should quit trying to find the nearest camera and the nearest fawning media and get his backside to work actually getting something done!
