Chris your right free agency did rip that team apart. I believe that free agency also killed baseball. I personally don't even watch baseball anymore. But what a team that was in the good old days. I also think Bonds should be in the hall of fame. His numbers pre Balco would have been enough to get into the hall, besides how many players are in the hall of fame that used steroids already. If you played professional sports from the seventies to 2003 chances are you used roids. I don't see what the big deal is. Actors get face lifts, buissness men go back to school, atheletes take steriods. I my mind there all preformance enhancing.

Michael: The difference is the Pirates didn't purposely lose Bonds, Bonilla, Drabek, etc. That team was dismantled because all those players became free agents and the Pirates were too poor to outbid richer teams for them. In this case, they purposely torpedoed every remotely decent player on the team in the hope that minor league players other teams don't seem to want and are 2-3 years from even being in the majors will all blossom into stars.

And agreed on Miller. I think he's the final free agent resigning you'll see this year.

This is not the first time the Pirates have dismantled a team. Remember they had Bonds,Bonilla,Van Slyke,Drabek so on. I just wish they would take some notes from the Penguins or Steelers and put together a championship team. As for Miller he is one of the best tight ends in the game. Very glad he got the contract and is staying put.

Robyn: I've agreed with some of the Pirates trades but I just don't believe wholesale dismantling is how you rebuild a team. Ever hear the saying "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush?"

I understand the current team wasn't winning but there were some very good players on the team. Instead of building around a few of those good players, they traded every last one for minor leaguers who may or may not ever reach Pittsburgh.

And, yes, I'm glad Miller is staying put. I think he was "under the radar" because the team told him they had to worry about Harrison, Hines, and Starks first but he was on their To Do list. So he kept quiet and waited his turn, which is yet another reason to like him.

Call me an optimist, but I'm hoping that the recent dismantling of the Pirates is fianlly a step in the right direction. They weren't winning with the current lineup, so what else was there to do?

And its great news about Heath. He's been kind of flying under the radar and i'm glad we've locked down this great piece of the puzzle for the next 6 years!
