Lawrence, stories like yours are what makes me the saddest when it comes to the Buccos. I have twin goddaughters who turn 13 this year. It pains me to realize they weren’t even alive the last time Pirates baseball wasn’t a joke.

I would encourage you to embrace pur lovable losers but, honestly, your attitude is probably the smartest way to go. My loyalty has brought nothing but aggravation and shame.

Andrew, good call on the Pistons. I usually try to pretend the NBA doesn’t exist but they should have been mentioned. It just goes to show even though the Lions are terrible, there are some first class teams in Detroit.

And as someone who has spent so many years in “enemy territory,” I appreciate your perspective on my post.

I was four years old when the Pirates last had a winning season. I never really cared to follow them, so as far as I’m stubbornly concerned, the Pirates don’t even exist… Even though it is a long summer with no sports to watch…

Not to mention that the Detroit Pistons basketball team has been a really good team for most of this decade. Only this last year did they not go over 500 and made the playoffs despite being like 1 game off 500. They’ve won a championship, lost another, and been deep in the playoffs a lot.

I lived in Detroit for about 10 years after being in the Mon Valley for 9.

So I can aptly say you made the comparison quite well.

Robyn, I honestly believe the Detroit Lions will make the playoffs before our Pirates manage to finish above .500 just once. But after watching some playoff baseball yesterday, I came to the sad conclusion that no matter how much I’d like to, I could never bring myself to care about another team. I’m a ‘Burgher and I’m stuck with the Pirates.
