Know Thy Enemy: New Orleans Saints
Thanks to my friends over at Benstonium for our Halloween themed opening. Check out more great Pittsburgh sports videos at their website. The Pittsburgh Steelers play their first prime time game of the season when they take the field in front of 70,000 cross-dressing lunatics in New Orleans on Sunday night. In many ways, this will be the first real test of the season. Yeah, the Steelers have played some quality teams already but there were mitigating circumstances. Against the Ravens, they were starting Charlie Batch. Against the Falcons and Titans, they had a completely healthy defense. The defending Super [...]
Oh Snap! Mike Tomlin Gets Sassy
Watch out, Roger Goodell. The teacher’s pet is turning into a rebel without a cause. Mike Tomlin had some feisty words for the nitwits running the NFL in his Tuesday press conference. Most of it was directed at Ray Anderson, the goof most responsible for the sudden realization that football is a violent sport and *gasp* sometimes people get hurt. He sent a ridiculous video to all thirty-two NFL teams which contained such McNuggets of wisdom as, “Even though this hit is legal and not penalized, we’re going to be looking to eliminate such plays.” This week, Anderson singled out [...]
Can Aaron Smith Pull A Woodson?
When Pittsburgh Steelers great Rod Woodson was enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame a couple years back, people would ask me about him whenever I was interviewed. Rod provided a lot of great memories, such as the 1989 Wild Card playoff game against the Houston Oilers where he ran over RB Lorenzo White forcing what would be the game-winning turnover. But nothing can compare to his miraculous return in 1995. In the first game of the season, Barry Sanders juked Woodson’s ACL clean off his knee necessitating reconstructive surgery. Meanwhile, the Steelers marched through the regular season, survived [...]
Week 7 Recap: Grand Theft Miami
Mike Tomlin likes to say “Style points don’t matter.” That’s his unique way of saying it doesn’t matter how you win as long as you win. It’s a good thing games aren’t judged on style because the Pittsburgh Steelers would’ve been mocked by Perez Hilton for their 23-22 victory over the Miami Dolphins. For the second week in a row, the vaunted Steelers defense made a mediocre quarterback look like an All-Pro. Chad Henne, who threw four picks in his last two games, completed 23/36 for 257 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. While the defense did force a [...]
Know Thy Enemy: Miami Dolphins
Time to get back to football or strenuous two-handed touch as the Lords of the NFL seem intent on making it… After a league record 10 win improvement in 2008, the Miami Dolphins figured to take a step back last year and they did not disappoint anyone but their fifteen diehard fans in south Florida. The Fins started 0-3, rallied to 7-6, then lost their last three games to finish the season below .500. The drop-off really was inevitable as so often happens in the NFL, the Dolphins went from having one of the best turnover ratios in the league [...]
James Harrison Won’t Play Flag Football
Sweet iPad, Stink. The firestorm over the unwarranted fine levied against Pittsburgh Steelers star linebacker James Harrison reached a new level yesterday. Silverback didn’t show up for practice and, through his agent, announced he was seriously considering retirement. Why would this man who struggled for years and years to make it to the NFL give up his dream? More importantly, why would he forfeit a $50 million dollar contract? Because he’s standing up for what is right. The game of football is a violent sport. It’s been that way since the first game was played in Latrobe in 1895. Yet [...]
James Harrison Fined For Playing Football
Here we go again. In their never-ending quest to ruin the greatest sport on earth, the NFL has decided to crack down on hitting. “Wait,” you may ask, “Isn’t football a game of large heavily muscled men slamming into each other at a high rate of speed?” Yes it is. But the NFL is doing their best to remove as much contact from a contact sport as possible. James Harrison was fined $75,000 for his knock out blow on Cleveland’s Mohamed Massaquoi last Sunday. It was a thing of beauty, a vicious yet perfectly clean hit. The [...]
Roethlisberger Protesters Embarrass Steeler Nation
For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. (Luke 14:11) You may have heard Ben Roethlisberger made his triumphant return to Heinz Field this past Sunday. What you may not have heard about was the group outside the stadium protesting his return. The reason you didn’t hear about this band of tree-hugging imbeciles is because their outrage enticed a grand total of twenty people into action. The often-mocked PNC Park walkout a few years ago got about 100 people to join. Yes, more people protested the Pirates stinking for eighteen years [...]
Week 6 Recap: Big Ben Bombs Browns
Don’t make James Harrison angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. Displaying a balanced attack missing most of the first month of the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers crushed the hapless Cleveland Browns by a final score of 28-10. Of course, the main storyline was the return of Ben Roethlisberger from his unjustified four game suspension. Prior to the game, Ben was introduced to a rousing ovation from the Heinz Field crowd. I have to admit to getting a little lump in my throat seeing the hero of Steeler Nation receive such a warm and appreciative reception from the [...]
Know Thy Enemy: Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns improved upon their pathetic total of four wins in 2008 by winning a whopping five games last year. Baby steps, I guess. They did, however, win their last four games in a row highlighted by one of the most embarrassing losses in Pittsburgh Steelers history, a 13-6 debacle on a frigid Thursday night. Following the season, the front office was cleared out with Mike Holmgren being brought in to resurrect yet another franchise. Coo Coo g’ joo. STEELERS DEFENSE vs. BROWNS OFFENSE Poor poor Colt McCoy. He was on the verge of being cut during the preseason, [...]
