Mendenhall Defends AP Slavery Comments

Well it turns out that Brad Childress isn’t the only thing from the Minnesota Vikings to be completely assinine.  Apparently, Adrian Peterson said this on Friday after the lockout was called:

“It’s modern-day slavery, you know?” Peterson said. “People kind of laugh at that, but there are people working at regular jobs who get treated the same way, too. With all the money … the owners are trying to get a different percentage, and bring in more money.”

Millions of dollars on the table is comparative to slavery?!  You could argue that slavery was a multi million/billion/trillion dollar business because of all the money it made plantations back in the 18th & 19th centuries.  But slaves didn’t see money.  AP, last time I checked, you got paid over 10 million dollars.

Well if you thought that wasn’t crazy enough, one of the Steelers, Rashard Mendenhall has defended AP’s statement.  He was Tweeted this (look near the bottom)

@AdrianPeterson Anyone with knowledege of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel each other

Yup.  Parallel.  If you go to his twitter page, you can read up on some follow up doozies.  Nation, thoughts?

I used to say the same thing about gym class in high school. But what do I know?

Kind of makes my post on keeping things in perspective a little more relevant, I think. People on twitter are so sick of the CBA, and if you look at Twitter users as a microcosm of the population, you can safely deduct that most other people are sick of it too.

I’m not sure AP and Rashard are wrong in their comparison, they’re just getting too worked up by the internet tough guys who are calling them overpaid and undereducated people. Rashard seems to be an intelligent guy, he’s just dumb enough to get in to it with these people (some of them his fans) via the internet.

NFL players should be careful what they say about their fans. Anything else is par for the course, I think.

No modern day slavery consists of children from third world countries being shipped somewhere to work 14+ hours a day for little food, no money and no education opportunity. Subjected to beating, burning and many other forms of coporal punishment.
Sorry, there is no way that that compares to someone making a good living with the ability to negotiate their salary, bonus, working conditions, retirement plan, etc….
I understand the intent of the comment but can anyone say exageration?

I think Peterson and Mendenhall have made the most asinine comparison in the history of comparisons.
To try to equate slavery with how modern day athletes are getting paid is not only ridiculous, but it is also a slap in the face to people whose ancestors were slaves.
Oh, wait, aren’t Peterson and Mendenhall African-Americans?
You’d think they would know better than to say something so insensitive.
It was a poor choice of words, bordering on the insane. And Mendy would have been a lot better served to say nothing.

Have they called the owners Nazis yet?
