Here is Sunday’s edition of The Morning Cup.
Was the draft class of ’71 a better class than ’74?
Boise State wide receiver Austin Pettis will visit the team sometime next week. Pettis wracked up some pretty good numbers in his junior and senior years. With Hines Ward getting older and producing less (statistically), it would be a smart move to gain another receiver to develop. There’s uncertainty how Brown and Sanders will pan out over the next couple of seasons for the Steelers, and the team may have a bigger need if they cut Sweed during camp.
Quarterback Joe Flacco from the Ratbirds is unhappy that he has not had a contract extension. Reporting on the Ratbirds’ woes is a nice Sunday pick-me-up. Flacco says:
“I think I’ve established myself. If you’re not confident with who I am, I’m not sure what a year is going to make….. Ideally for me, I would like to do something as soon as possible because I feel like I deserve it. If you don’t feel like I’m going to be your quarterback for the next 10 years, what’s one year going to make. I don’t know what the deal is. We’ll have to let this play out and see.”
Flacco-boy, I don’t think it’s ever a matter of being ‘established’ when you play for Baltimore or any team for that matter in this league. And quite frankly, what have you done that has made you ‘established?’ Until you can beat the Steelers and beat more than the KC Chiefs (no offense Arrowhead Addict) in a playoff game, you will never be seen as ‘established.’ Teams want winners. Consider yourself under the Aaron Rodgers Test – you won’t be established until you win the big one. Best of luck getting an extension within the next two years if you can’t.
