The weekend is almost upon us and the draft is less than 20 days away. The race is on for Judge Susan Nelson to lift this lockout by draft day. If not, I think we will see a different draft day than if the lockout weren’t in effect. The biggest headline for this morning is four new players visited the Steelers yesterday.
Boise State wide receiver Austin Pettis, Maryland running back Da’rel Scott, Virginia cornerback Ras-I Dowling and Citadel cornerback Cortez Allen. As mentioned in and earlier Morning Cup, Pettis had a very solid carrer at Boise State and has the physical attributes – 6’3″ and 209 lbs. – to have a good shot at being a solid wide out even though he is a little slower than desired (4.56 in the 40). Da’rel Scott is an interesting look because of his speed at that position – 4.3 in the 40. Mwelde Moore is still ‘young’ at 28 and made some key third down plays for the team last season. But is he the best third down back available? The Steelers could be looking at Scott to possibly replace Moore in that third down back role. I-Dowling and Allen are not early round quality – are the Steelers telling us again that they are expecting to go corner late in the draft?
Speaking of running backs and the draft, Don Banks has written an interesting article on the near extinction of running backs in the first round.
