Thursday’s rally with Hines Ward and Kym Johnson was a pretty quick affair, but packed with lots of cheering, dancing and fun. Kym Johnson was made an honorary Pittsburgher. I wasn’t able to make it down to the event, but I did watch the event streamed live. The dancing couples were very good and all three ‘won’ as each judge voted for a separate couple. Probably a predetermined thing, so I’m sure they had enough signed jerseys and towels to go around. The Nation was somewhere between 3,500 to 4,500 strong that afternoon. No Super Bowl parade numbers – but still a pretty large crowd to celebrate that mirror ball trophy… and to see Hines shake it one more time.
James Farrior and Charlie Batch are backing out of a promotional event at the Meadowlands this evening for fear of any legal backlash from the NFL because it involves the opening of a casino within the race track. Far from as controversial as what Country Crossing casino has turned out to be, I think Farrior and Batch don’t want to take any chances with getting disciplined by the NFL once the lockout is lifted. Gambling and any association with gambling is a serious offense in the NFL, which could lead to suspensions. Smart move on Farrior and Batch’s part, especially since Batch has enough woes to worry about.
In yesterday’s installment of the Best of the NFL, John Clayton took the reigns for ‘best of…’ for teams. The Steelers made it for best front office (even though on Tuesday Tomlin/Colbert did not make it as best Coach/FO combo), rivalry (with the Ravens), and fan base. All correct in my eyes. I disagree with the Patriots as best coaching staff unless that includes how well you can point a video camera at an opposing team’s sideline. James Walker’s AFC North list includes the Steelers/Ravens as best rivalry. He aslo gives the nod to Baltimore for best tailgating…. even though he’s never tailgated in any of the teams’ sites. Ummm ok. He aslo agreed with the Steelers having the best fan base. Steeler Nation is strong and proud and we fill those away stadiums.
