Here We Go Steelers: Fan Edition

The 2011 season is right around the corner. We spend so much time analyzing the effectiveness of Tomlin’s “Back on Backer’s” drill, and whether or not James Harrison and Ben Roethlisberger will randomly break in to a fist fight in the locker room, we forget the real reason we’re here in the first place: We love the Pittsburgh Steelers. Steelers fans are by and far the greatest, and most widespread fans in the world. Even writers from this site hail from states many many hours from Pittsburgh. Our editor, the man with the plan, Craig, has to put up with all that Green Bay BS while living in Wisconsin. I’m all the way up in MN.

Regardless of where you’re at, the Steelers fever burns strong. I even spent some time in Mexico City recently where there is a big Steelers bug. We’re everywhere. So, in this edition of Here We Go, I’m going to give you all the music you need to host a great Steelers party at your house, or at your local Steelers bar. Get ready to party.

The classic music to accompany every score is Jimmy Pol’s iconic Steelers fight song. There are many versions, but I prefer 1978’s version, which you can hear here:

This fight song was first written in 1972 and then was subsequently revised year in and year out all the way through the mid-eighties. Yeah, this guy milked it for all it was worth. You’ll find that each version has it’s own lyrics specific to the players on the team at that year. Since the 70s Steelers were widely consistent, the 1978 version does not vary much from the original. You can find original records for sale on ebay for as little as $15, if you’re a record person like I am. Or, you can just go to youtube and search for the fight song there. You’ll find some videos where people simply put the record on and let it play. Turn up those speakers and hit play after every score. I suggesting printing out the lyrics and handing them out to the people at your party. It’s a blast! Here are the lyrics to Jimmy Pol’s iconic 1978 fight song:

Da-Da-Da-Da-Ta-Da – Charge!

We’re from the town with that great football team, We cheer the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chuck Noll and all his friends are all on the field. Go out and get them Steelers.

Bradshaw, and Rocky, and Franco and Lynn, We love you Pittsburgh Steelers.

It’s been many years in coming, just keep that Steelers machinery humming

Defense, Defense, make them scramble, intercept that ball.

Defense, Defense, keeps the Steelers always best of all!

Mean Joe, Mean Joe, do your thing against the other team,

He starts from year to year, we’re so glad he’s playing here,

Now join with me, and sing the Steelers cheer-eer-EER!

We’re from the town with that great football team, We cheer the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Winning’s a habit, not only a dream, Go out and get them Steelers!

Gerela’s Gorillas are here for the show, and so is Franco’s Army,

It’s been many years in coming, just keep that Steelers machinery humming.

Offense, Offense, take that football whole way up the field!

Offense, Offense, let’s score and score and never ever yield!

Franco, Franco, can you believe we have a running game?

The Steelers are so great, and so hard to overrate,

Good things, will come, to those who work and wait. Charge!

Another song that is great for the party, and is revised yearly like Jimmy Pol’s fight song, is Roger Woods’ “Here We Go.” Here We Go has a great hook that everyone can sing, and it is the perfect song for getting pumped up for the new season to start. Here are the lyrics to Roger Woods’ tune, print them out and pass them out. You can find the song here, play it at will before, during, and after the game:

“Here We Go” – 2010 (Revised) – Roger Woods

Here we go, Here we go, Here we go, Steelers, Here we go,

Pittsburgh’s goin’ to the Super Bowl, Here we go

Cheer the Steelers, Black and the Gold, The town of Pittsburgh’s heart and soul,

The Steeler Nation has the best fans, We are from Pittsburgh 6 time Super Bowl champs!

Here we go, Here we go, Here we go, Steelers, Here we go,

Pittsburgh’s goin’ to the Super Bowl, Here we go

Coach Tomlin is ready to win, (Here we go) With Ward, Miller, Wallace and Ben,

(Here we go) We’ll go to Mendenhall to get a touchdown,

And if you get in his way he’s going to knock you around

Here we go, Here we go, Here we go, Steelers, Here we go,

Pittsburgh’s goin’ to the Super Bowl, Here we go

Now the offense is ready to score, (Here we go) & there’s one thing we know for sure,

(Here we go) If we don’t get it in the end zone, We’ll get 3 points off of Suisham’s toe

Here we go, Here we go, Here we go, Steelers, Here we go,

Pittsburgh’s goin’ to the Super Bowl, Here we go

We’ve got Harrison, Smith and Hampton, (Here we go) Polamalu, Ike and Timmons,

(Here we go) The other team won’t gain any ground

‘Cause the defense is gonna bring the steel curtain down

Here we go, (defense defense….) Here we go, (defense defense defense…)

Here we go, Steelers, Here we go, (defense defense defense…)

Pittsburgh’s goin’ to the Super Bowl, Here we go

Here we go, Here we go, Here we go, Steelers, Here we go,

Pittsburgh’s goin’ to the Super Bowl, Here we go

There are other songs out there that you might like to use. Certainly “Black and Yellow” became a cult favorite before last year’s super bowl, but I much prefer something a little easier to sing along with for a party. Some others have also done parodies of Lady Gaga songs and others, but those tunes go out of style so fast, I won’t even go there.

So, you’ve got your music! Grab your favorite Steelers jersey (I think mine will be Woodley this year, in honor of his new contract), and your terrible towel and get to it! The first pre-season game is Friday, and it will be our first chance to see these young guys like Baron Batch show us what they can do on the field. Quit worrying about the injuries, quit worrying about all that other stuff and remember that football is going to be on so soon. Be the fan that you are and go crazy! Go do your fantasy drafts and buy your seasonal Steelers gear, go get tickets for your yearly pilgrimage to Hines Field, drink some Iron Shitty, grab the new sideline hat (just got mine), and get to it!
