Is Big Ben Ready to Be Captain Again?

As final cuts were being made and Crezdon Butler was being swept up by the Steelers in the West Cardinals, the Steelers named their team captains for the year.  The captains for the 2011 season include Ward, Farrior, Arnaz Battle for special teams and Ben Roethlisberger.  After Big Ben’s brush with the law and resulting suspension by commish Goodell, his teammates decided to leave him off the captains list.  This year, Ben is back on the co-captains list – but is he ready or deserving as such?  Last year was a very productive year for the franchise quarterback, and he appeared to experience some redemption on his part for his actions during that previous offseason.  Like most in Steelers Nation, I feel that Ben is an elite quarterback on the field, but his persona off could use a bit of improvement – and he is making strides in that.  He is a great commander on the field and is a captain in his own right, but should that extend to that right of passage for the team?  For those voting ‘no’ – why not?

Should Ben Roethlisberger have been named a captain for the Steelers?

His teammates voted for him. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

The ship is only as stable, sturdy, and steady as its Captain. Once the Captain’s gone, it’s only a matter of time. Just ask Santonio, Jeff Reed, and Hines.

I think Ben still has stripes to earn back.

@SmarterThanYou Why does it matter that much to you? He’s still playing. Being “Captain” is just a glorified badge of honor.

It matters to me because the man was never convicted of any crime yet Steelers fans didn’t hesitate to turn their backs on him and/or judge him due to this misguided notion that the Steelers are held to a higher standard. Do the names Bam Morris, Ernie Holmes, Greg Lloyd, Carlton Haselrig, Justin Strzelczyk, etc etc etc ring any bells?

Most fans didn’t even wait to see what type of supposed evidence there was before deciding his guilt. Did you know they only needed a DNA sample ONE BILLIONTH the size of a raisin to prove there had been sexual contact…and that they didn’t even have that? Did you know the chick in GA talked to the police only after her friend, who was kicked out of the VIP area earlier that night for calling Ben a rapist because he wasn’t paying any attention to her, called a cop over and coerced her into telling this tale?

And don’t give me that “he shouldn’t have been behaving this way” bullshit. Have you ever been around professional athletes when they were out and women were around? As a person who has tended bar for nearly 2 decades I can tell you that I have, and I’ve seen A LOT. People are clueless as to what women do to get close to these athletes. The only thing Ben is guilty of is doing something thousands of pro athletes before him have done…pursuing the pussy that was offered up to him.

The Steelers have a history of players with issues just like other teams. Some teams have more, some have less, but all have some. And that’s something that won’t change.

It doesn’t matter what the fans think…what matters is that his teammates wanted him to be captain and he’s captain. Fuck off fans…it’s not for you to judge. The fans need to get over themselves…the sooner the better.

That’s why it matters to me.

@SmarterThanYou All valid points. When it comes down to it, it’s a vote by the players, for the players.

@MikeCruz True that & thank you! Btw, my comments weren’t directed at you…just at the fans with the “holier than thou” attitude. Those are the fans who give the rest of us a bad name!
