Is beating the Patriots more important to Steeler fans than beating the Ravens?

The past 7 years have been very successful for the Steelers.  Except for when it comes to playing the Patriots.  It’s killing me to admit this but Pretty Boy Brady and the Pats have owned the Steelers the past 7 years.  Fortunately, when it comes to playoff time, the Steelers haven’t had to deal with the Patriots en route to their past 3 Super Bowl trips.  In 2006 the Patriots lost at home to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round, in 2009 the Patriots missed the playoffs completely, and last year the Pats lost at home to the Jets.  When it comes to regular season matchups, the Patriots have completely dominated the Steelers since that one fateful Halloween afternoon of 2004 where the Steelers snapped the Patriots 21 game win streak.  Then, as we all know, Belicheat took his video footage of that game to completely destroy the Steelers in the AFC title game and they’ve manhandled us ever since.  So, Steeler Nation, do we want revenge against the Patriots more than Baltimore?

Don’t get it twisted; a trip to this year’s playoffs isn’t possible without winning the division.  Well, it’s not completely impossible, but highly unlikely.  Baltimore is our hated division rivals, and they handed our asses to us in Week 1.  Sure the Patriots are in our conference, and stacking conference wins is important, but not more important that divisional wins.  Even though it is only Week 8, this week has a playoff like atmosphere to it.  Every year, no matter how many years before the Patriots have failed to even win a playoff game, they are considered the team to beat in the AFC.  In the NFL, a team’s most important game is always the next one up.  Ideally, the Steelers take down the Patriots and exact revenge on the Ratbirds in consecutive weeks leaving them the undisputed team to beat in the AFC.  Without question, Baltimore is the more important game, but let’s face it, the fans especially want to see the Steelers take down Pretty Boy Brady and the Pats so bad we can taste it.

Still bitter about 2004? Image courtesy post-gazette.com

I don’t know about you but I’m still bitter about that 2004 AFC Championship game.  As James Harrison explained in his infamous Men’s Journal article this summer, he seems to be still bitter too.  Unfortunately, Harrison is still out for this game recovering from his eye surgery.  After that game I was ridiculous.  I mean slamming doors, temper tantrums, refusing to speak, full-on acting like a baby.  The Steelers dominated the Pats earlier in the year on their way to a 15-1 record and things couldn’t have looked any better for them to make it to the Super Bowl.  During the swept-under-the-rug by Goodell “Spygate” controversy, it came out that the Patriots had used illegally obtained video footage for that particular game.  There’s no way to know just what was used, however, because in Goodell’s infinite wisdom, all the evidence from “Spygate” was destroyed.  Since then the Patriots have played suspiciously bad against opponents they previously played the same season, for example the Jets last year.  Intriguing isn’t it?  Still, it isn’t productive, or very healthy to hold onto one game with so much bitterness.  The Steelers have gone on to win 2 Super Bowls and appear in another Super Bowl while the Patriots have had much less success.

Last year the Patriots came into Heinz Field and dominated in a 39-26 win that wasn’t even as close as that score might suggest.  The Steelers had only 3 points going into the 4th quarter of the game, and Brady had carved up the Steelers defense like a Thanksgiving turkey.  No one besides Ben has had the kind of success at Heinz Field that Brady has had.  This is something that kills Steeler fans.  We know the Steelers can beat Baltimore; we’ve beaten them when it counts consistently.  But when it comes to the Patriots, the Steelers not only come up short, they have been completely controlled.  This is a rivalry game without it being an actual rival.

There’s nothing I like about the Patriots.  From their cheating, weasel looking, hoodie wearing head coach, to their arrogant and annoying former players turned NFL analysts, I hate the whole damned Brady Bunch.  This season the Patriots acquired Ochocinco from the Bungles, which isn’t necessarily something to worry about considering the fact that Ocho has never put up good numbers against the Steelers and so far this season has been a waste of time as he struggles to learn the complexity that is the Patriots offense.  I’m not worried about Ocho in the least bit.  Brady could throw to him all day if he wants, chances are Chad will either run the wrong route or drop the pass anyway.  As much as I hate the Patriots though, I hate the Ravens even more.

What I am worried about is Welker, Gronkowski, and their running game.  Brady ended last year’s game against the Steelers without being sacked once.  Also worrying me is the fact that the Patriots have had 2 weeks to prepare for this game coming off of their bye week.  I’d like to see Woodley continue his streak of multiple sacks as well as Polamalu getting the interception that has eluded him so far this season.  The key to winning this game is to jump ahead with a lead early.  Fall behind against the Patriots and you’re pretty much done for.  I think this is the perfect game for Roethlisberger and Wallace to connect on some more 40+ yard touchdown passes.

Ben and Mike need to hook up some more. Image courtesy sportkings.com

So does the Patriots game mean more than Baltimore?  Maybe if the Steelers hadn’t got shellacked in the opening week by the Ratbirds it could mean more.  But the Steelers can get to the Super Bowl without beating the Patriots, it’s been done.  If I had to pick which game was more important to win, I’d have to pick Baltimore without hesitation.  But I don’t have to pick, the Steelers are capable of handing losses to both New England and Baltimore and I believe they will.  Go Steelers!

Must be talking about someone else or a different team or something. I remember in his first superbowl season Ben torched the colts and the went to Denver and threw all over them and got to the superbowl. He has had one of the worst off lines in football since and has presure on him every down unlike the "elite" quarterbacks. The steelers win because of Ben . His ability to run the two minute drill and win games is legendary. 2008 they had the hardest schedule in football and like every game Ben would extend the play and rally the team. Tired of people hating on Ben . If he is so bad go back to kordell and maddox. Give him protection and route against him again in February.

SteveWade I would never argue that. Ben is twice the football player Kordell ever was. Cowhers always amazed me by how much he got out of that team with Stewart at QB. Have fun tomorrow.

To be honest, I just came across this article via a Sportsillustrated.com. link.

I have great respect for Pittsburgh football.

No, he's tall and big ...that's different than being smart. Actually, the Steelers won despite the fact he was playing quarterback. He is on record for having the worst performance of any quarterback in Superbowl history (a passer rating of 22.6). Against a good team with good coaching, he becomes average rather quickly. Unfortunately, his lack of brilliance is well documented both on and off the field.

He's smart enough to be a 2 time superbowl champion.....its that simple

Cute article but you realize it just comes down to the Steelers having a quarterback who isn't very smart - which is essential for a quarterback being above average in the NFL today. It's rather simple.

Good luck.

black and Gold Cute comment. Ben is an above average quarterback by far, anyone who knows anything about football can recognize that despite his performance in Super Bowl XL. He is no Tom Brady though but the beauty part of that is he hasn't had to be for the Steelers to be overall more successful than the Patriots for the past seven years.

Gosh Kimmy, I must one of those folks who doesn't know anything about football. lol

Indeed, the Steelers have always had a great organization and that's why they've been so successful for so long. Early on, the Patriots didn't need to rely on Brady either but with salaries, free agency, injuries and retirements, the dynamic of each team changes (look at the Colts now). Never good to put all your eggs in one basket.

But in the end, whether you measure the last seven years or last ten, all that matters is tomorrow. Have a great time and good luck.

Just so you know (and in the spirit of the article), I just love it when the Steelers beat the Ravens. :)

...but I know that deep down you really do have your doubts about "Big Ben".

Thanks I love it too when the Steelers beat the Ravens and I would love to see the Steelers beat the Patriots too, that's going to be a tall task and I'll be the first one to admit that. Like I said, Ben is no Tom Brady, not many QB's measure up to his stats but Ben is definitely not just a dumb quarterback and he's one of the players that Steeler fans don't have any doubts about. I appreciate the comments though, and getting into the spirit of the article since it wasn't actually a Ben vs. Tom article anyway. I hope you continue to visit the site and check out the other writers too! Here's hoping for a great game tomorrow!

Kimmyblack Thanks Kimmy.

Right, comparisons are just good fodder for conversation. Everything changes, every game, with each team, and every season. As an outsider, I do like that your QB is as tough as any one on the field - offense or defense.

If Belichick can't steal any good video and New England happens to get bounced early, I'll be with you all behind the Steelers. Have a great season.

I can personally testify that Kimmy did act like that during the 2004 ACF championship game, as a matter of fact, we rarely mention it for that exact reason, its a tough one to get over, that's for sure!! I would like to hear cowhercbs 's thoughts on that game considering the fact well all now know they cheated!

JennMTcowhercbs Get your head out of the sand. ALL teams cheat in different ways to gain an edge. The Pats got caught.

Hey, Kimmy,

Good article. I liked it a lot. It's nice hearing a female's perspective about Brady that doesn't involve how gorgeous he is.

Besides, I'm pretty sure Brady is gay.

Anyway, you pose an interesting question about which win is more important. As Rick mentions in his comment below, two wins in the next two weeks would go a long way to putting the Steelers in the playoffs. I would be willing to accept a split of these two games if it would guarantee a win over the Bengals in week 10.

I've been sitting here thinking about this for a long time and I just can't decide which would be better. On the one hand, I love beating the Ravens twice, even three times a season. Nothing warms my heart like sending Ray Lewis and the rest of those purple-clad a-holes home licking their wounds.

On the other hand, finally turning the tide on the Tom Brady ("Ref, that defensive end glared at me. Aren't you going to throw a flag?" "Why, yes, sir, Mr. Brady! How silly of me not to have thought on that on my own.") would be truly great.

Decisions, decisions.

Kimmy I have to admit, I haven't met many women who are as full of pure hatred for the Ravens (and the Patriots) as you. I think I'm falling in love with you.

Division wins are always more important because the easiest road to the post-season is by winning your division. That being said, I think it would do a lot of good for the psyche of the team and The Nation to win over the Pats and the Sith Lord who is their head coach.

Like you say, though, here's to hoping the Steelers take the path of least resistance and just win 'em all.

GO STEELERS!!!!

If the Steelers beat the Pats and the Ravens over the next two weeks then they are setting themselves up as the very best team in the AFC.

Watching every game this year, I don't think we're the best team in the AFC, frankly.

The years and years of front office neglect of our O Line has resulted in Ben taking a beating over his career that is going to come home to roost sooner than we fans will like. And it's killing the running game as well.

If we win the next two I'll have to say I'll fall for "We're the best!" just like the rest of the fans, but hell, I'd be happy if we lose to the Patriots then beat the living tarsnot out of the Ravens 70-3 the next week.

I'd take that over barely winning both games even.

RickAucoin

Haha! I love that score! But you'd take that over winning both games?

Double TE nightmare arriving in Heinz Field Sunday.

I'd take the Pats too; what worries me is that the Farrior/Foote combo will be rendered useless vs. Gronkowsky/Hernandez :S

Last night I dreamed that the Steelers got crushed by the Pats just like the Saints did with the Colts last sunday :( Hope is just that, a bad dream :P

Kimmy 27 pts

ZimmersHole

Yes let's hope very much that was a bad dream! The tight ends for the Pats are so dangerous, I think it might be more important to get to them and knock them off of their routes than getting to Brady.

PVS53 5 pts

KimmyZimmersHole TE Gronk is 6'6" and 265 LB. Steelers may need two players to knock him off his route. Hernandez is as fast as a WR. Brady throws quick slants to Welker. He will be hitting Gronk and Hernandez with 10-15 yard passes over the middle. Linebackers have had real trouble covering these TEs. Both are RED ZONE nightmares. Brady will go to either TE in the RED ZONE for a score. Bank on it.

Here's my take: I'd rather beat the Patriots than the Ravens in the next 2 weeks. We -know how to beat the Ravens- and all we need to do there is execute well. But the Patriots have been a much more difficult proposition, requiring more than just good execution.

Kimmy 27 pts

I'll agree that it might be more satisfying to beat the Patriots but I certainly wouldn't be happy watching the playoffs this year without the Steelers in it thinking to myself "Well at least we beat the Patriots". If we don't split with Baltimore that might just happen.
