Charity of Steelers And Other Pittsburgh Sports Teams Shouldn’t Go Unnoticed

Below is a link to a great article from the PPG and Gene Collier as he reports on an even in Pittsburgh involving two of the Steelers safeties, Ryan Clark and Ryan Mundy.

The event last night was sponsored by DADS – Dads Assisting Dads.  It’s a county program that is part of the Office of Children, Youth, and Families of Allegheny County.  Clark and Mundy met with 40 kids.  They signed footballs, took pictures and met with all the parents and kids.  I love stories like this, and there aren’t enough of them that we see or hear of between all the other crap that we debate and discuss about football as Gene so eloquently puts it here:

"Important events of a similar spirit happen almost every night thanks to the Steelers, the Penguins, the Pirates and to the countless others who facilitate them. On this same night Sidney Crosby was across town at Children’s Hospital, just days after being shelved again by concussion-like symptoms. There he’d joined a host of teammates to combust this same instantaneous joy and relief. The impact can’t be quantified, but it is too often undervalued against the constant yammer of wins and losses, money and glory, contracts signed and contracts shredded, “concerns” about the offense, the defense, the power play, the penalty kill and the pure Pittsburgh tedium of who fines whom how much and for what."

It’s just one of the many reasons that not only do I love watching the Steelers and Penguins (sorry Pirates) in game time situations but also hearing about the impact they have in a community that is hundreds of miles away from where I am.  The outreach to groups and citizens of my old hometown of Pittsburgh warms my heart during this time of year.  Keep it up boys.
