What can Smith do for the Steelers? image from landloyalty.com

Steelers Sign Troy Smith

The Steelers signed Heisman winning QB Troy Smith yesterday, he’s expected to take the number three spot behind Ben and Byron.

Troy won the Heisman while at Ohio State in 2006, yet was only taken in the fifth round of the 07 draft by the Ravens– where he played back up to Kyle Boller. Smith saw some playing time when Boller went out with an injury, but fumbled through his first starts. He did manage to squeak out a win against the Steelers in the final week of the 07 season. For the next year he was a small part of the Ravens offense, used mostly as a receiver or under center in short run situations, sharing time with Flacco.  Smith saw limited time with the Ravens in 09.

Smith was then released and signed with the 49ers in 2010 and showed some early success but was eventually replaced by Alex Smith. Smith spent the 2011 season in the UFL.

Hopefully his short NFL and UFL stints have made him more confident and he’ll be the ideal number 3. Can always bring him in for some wildcat, ha! I’m interested to see what comes of this.

    Is that Woodley chasing him?

@dbuzard It sure is. That ’06 game between Michigan and OSU when both were at the top of the polls was a pretty good game to boot.

@JLaw2 If the Steelers decide to pick up a developmental guy in the Draft (Rds. 5-7), Smith could definitely face some competition. There aren’t a whole heck of a lot of 6′ 200 lbs. QB’s with accuracy issues in the League right now, and Smith will have to earn his spot.

Although, I do agree with you on your last point. If the new Coordinator can use him successfully in a Wildcat-like package once or twice per game (pending he sticks at #3), I would be definitely be on board with him staying.

The ONLY reason that The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Quarterback Troy Smith is to “pick his brain” about The Baltimore Ravens Playbook! ALL THREE BACK-up Quarterbacks in Pittsburgh are “FREE AGENTS”… I highly suspect that The Steelers will re-sign Back-Up Quarterback Dennis Dixon, & will “shop” for another “QUALITY” Back-Up IN the DRAFT this April!

@Lotusman2013 I think we’ve beaten them enough in the last few years, post T Smith, that his brain isn’t needed for picking. Whats he gonna say that we all don’t already know…they signed Leach and Mckinnie to stop Woodley n Harrison, stop rice you should win, Suggs n Lewis are loudmouth thugs, keep pressure on Flacco n he’ll prolly choke. And according to a site I was on yesterday, their D is now “old” like ours. Maybe it’s just to get Dixon step up his game while they shop. Guess we shall see

@Lotusman2013 @JLaw2 First off…Sorry that really wasn’t intended as a shot at you as it was at them. I had just eaten a fresh steamy load of $hit at the gym as the owner is a fan of theirs. Sarcasm can’t be read as it can be heard. Not on here to pick fights with others. There’s enough trolls to do that ESP with their poor loss today, too bad it was by the Pats(Go NFC).That’s a rather impressive resume. You’ve got a few years on me as 30 is the first one that I was around for. Agreed 40 was statistically “crappy” but a wins a win(or a ring in this case). Hey wait a sec, didn’t the zebras blow that game in our favor. Sorry there goes my “smart” side again. Honestly, I’ll admit the jealousy now cause you gotta pretty sweet deal going, with being able to do all that stuff with them. Take care n I’m sure we’ll speak again.

@DomDiTolla@JLaw2 Buckeye fan here and I LOVED having Smith as our starting QB, he was fantastic (also my favorite NCAA PS2 QB). I think Troy’s biggest issue has been maturity. Let’s hope he has grown up and is ready to play. If so, I think he could be really good. I always thought the Ravens made a mistake going with Flacco instead of developing Smith. Let’s hope it comes back to bite them.
