Chris Hoke has retired due to his neck injury and subsequent injury. Casey Hampton will have this THIRD ACL surgery in his career during this offseason. Aaron Smith has had a it rough the past couple of seasons. Bottom line – our defensive line is taking a beating.
In a 3-4 scheme, the defensive line is crucial in ‘eating up’ offensive linemen to allow the linebackers to roam free and get to the QB or RB early and often. Without good enough linemen, no double teams are warranted, therefore leaving linemen to easily pick up the blitz. With Hoke done, Hampton back in the O.R., and Smith’s sustainability in question should the Steelers rush to draft another lineman after just drafting Cam Heyward in 2011?
