Thoughts On CBS Sports List Of Pittsburgh Steelers Draft Needs

facebooktwitterreddit

CBS Sports released their thoughts on what the Steelers’ needs are.  In what could be mistaken as an April Fool’s story – I think CBS misses the mark on some of these.  I can only speculate that the is not in order of priority – otherwise I would have to completely question the sanity of Clark Judge.

Check out the article here.

I think Judge really misses the mark with drafting needs at QB.  Big Ben is a tough cookie and gets beat up a ton during the season.  He had some injury issues that were difficult for him to play through.  That high ankle sprain was pretty much the ruin of the Steelers’ playoff and Super Bowl hopes.  Drafting a QB late in the rounds will not really give you a dependable backup.  It will take a few seasons to really groom that guy, whomever he is.  There’s no way the Steelers will draft a QB in the early rounds.  The needs at OT, ILB and CB are too great for them to waste a pick on a rookie QB we won’t see unless Ben, Batch and QB #3 are all injured.  This was the first position Judge talks about – I sure hope he doesn’t think this is a top priority.  The Steelers need to fill the gaps in the offensive line first or else we WILL see QB #3 before November.  Our own Dom said in Mock Draft 5.0 that the Steelers won’t even be looking at QB until pick #246

I also disagree with his RB and WR needs.  Again they fall in as the second and third things he talks about.  Surely (don’t call me Shirley) he can’t think that the Steelers will be looking the at the boards for a RB and WR.  If they do, it will be late late late in the rounds – like after round 4.  Judge realizes that we have three other good receivers other than Wallace right?  And he knows that there are a bunch of bruisers waiting for the chance to carry the rock every Sunday.  Once again, Dom doesn’t even have a WR on the radar and a HB comes late (pick #240).  And I think he’s dead on.

OT, ILB, DL and CB – those will be the first four picks for the Steelers (in what order I don’t know).  They will take the highest valued player left on the board in Rounds 3-5 for DL and CB.  Don’t expect anything more or anything less.  The front office knows who the supporting cast to be put in place for next season.
