Steelers Draft Day: 1st Round Live Blog and Chat

The day is finally upon us.  It’s day one of the 2013 NFL Draft, and Radio City Music Hall is reved up for prime time.  Rodger Goodell has his hairs done and those teeth whitened.

Steeler fans, this year’s draft will prove to be an exciting one as the picks roll in from all around the league – the is probably one of the biggest drafts where there are no clear picks for each team based on the talen available.  The Steelers, who have the 17th overall pick, have a different priority depending on who you ask.  Will they go with a wide receiver like Cordell Patterson?  Or what about safety Kenny Vaccaro?  Or will OLB Jarvis Jones be correct in his assertion that he won’t go past the 17th pick and the Steelers?

Be sure to join us tonight on this page starting just before 8pm as NPC covers the draft.  We’ll be doing live updates, and we highly encourage you, our readers, to join us.  The site uses Disqus, so the comments section updates live – tell us what you think while it unfolds throughout the entire evening.  We hope to see you here and are excited to see what you have to say!

And as always – GO STEELERS!

    Here we go.

    • Dom DiTolla

      Hooray for the Draft.

  • Dom DiTolla

Does anybody think that the Raiders will trade back at #3?

    • scott sinclair

      nice call!

  • Craig

    I’m guessing Jags trade.

    • Craig

      Never mind!

    • Dom DiTolla

Good move. Monroe and him would be solid bookends.

  • scott sinclair

ok, my mock has been blown up with the first two picks!

    • Craig

      fired.

    • Dom DiTolla

Agree. I had Fisher right, if the Raiders take Floyd, then I’m still in decent shape.

      • Dom DiTolla

        Joeckel screwed me over. Lol.

        • Craig

          fired.

  • Craig

Ok, so I think Raiders trade down and maybe Lions sneak in here.

    • Dom DiTolla

Lane Johnson will likely come off the board no later than 5 now.

  • Dom DiTolla

Jags might be willing to trade back into Round 1 for a QB now. Maybe willing to go as high as #17?

  • scott sinclair

    oakland will be interesting

    • Dom DiTolla

      Floyd? Lotulelei? trade?

  • Craig

    Raiders rep just said trade!

  • Craig

I’m thinking D-town is sneaking in here with that trade.

    • Craig

      Nope it’s Miami

  • Dom DiTolla

TRADE! Miami. Looks like Albert isn’t going there now.

  • Dom DiTolla

Raiders might still be able to get Floyd and/or Lotulelei if teams in the top 10 get guard-happy.

  • Dom DiTolla

Holy Crap! Guess the Albert trade went through now.

  • Craig

    Wow.

    • Dom DiTolla

I’ll be interested to see how all the Dolphins’ moves pay off.

      • Craig

They only gave up the 42nd pick. Holy crap.

        • Dom DiTolla

They’re probably using their 54th pick on Albert, so they may have played that perfectly.

  • Craig

Well there’s a huge middle finger to Philly. Hahaha.

  • Craig

Three OT’s in the first four picks – crazy.

    • Dom DiTolla

Fluker might get picked at #7! Heck, I’m anxious to see where Cooper & Warmack end up.

  • Dom DiTolla

Ansah to the Lions? Milliner? Trade?

  • Dom DiTolla

Just bull-spitting here, but what if somebody like Milliner, Lotulelei, or Rhodes is available for the Steelers at #17? Would they take a chance?

  • Craig

That trade by Raiders makes no sense. It’s like Al is still alive and kickin’

    • Dom DiTolla

They could’ve got way more for it. They were desperate for a 2nd round pick probably. The cupboard is essentially bare in Oakland and any picks are probably welcome by McKenzie & Co.. Although that didn’t stop Pittsburgh’s defense from melting down there last year. Lol.

  • scott sinclair

i think arizona now goes back to the drawing board

    • Dom DiTolla

I had them trading back with Tennessee, there might be other interested parties. Especially if Milliner and Lotulelei fall.

  • scott sinclair

    wow..way too high for ansah

    • Dom DiTolla

Agreed, although I mocked him to Detroit today because they had such a desperate need for a defensive end.

  • Craig

A shame. I think he could have done really well in the ‘Burgh.

    • Dom DiTolla

So talented but so raw. If this was 2008 or 2009, he would be a great project pick for the Steelers. Could’ve played the 5-technique or even outside linebacker.

  • Craig

So is Geno Smith losing his lunch right now?

    • Dom DiTolla

If he falls past the Jets, who I don’t think will take a QB, he will free-fall.

  • Dom DiTolla

Mingo & Kruger. Adams and Gilbert had better be prepared.

    • scott sinclair

      amen

      • Dom DiTolla

That OLB rotation with Sheard could be scary.

        • Craig

The Bengals will always be the Bungals and the Browns will always be the Brownies until they start consistently beat up on the Steelers and Ravens and win the North.

          • Dom DiTolla

True. Very true sir. Still, I do worry about Ben’s health and the rest of the linemen’s knees with Gilbert out there. Lol.

  • scott sinclair

if buffalo passes on geno at 9, he’s in trouble

  • Dom DiTolla

    A guard/center at #7? That was crazy.

  • Dom DiTolla

Rams looking like they’ll trade up for Austin.

  • Dom DiTolla

Who do you guys think the Jets will take?

  • Dom DiTolla

    Is anybody there?

  • Dom DiTolla

Any thoughts on the Titans pick?

  • scott sinclair

Jets are asking alot of milliner. this one smells of rex ryan all the way

  • scott sinclair

is milliner going to start ahead of wilson?

    • Dom DiTolla

      I would think so.

    • Craig

I don’t think until a few weeks in after it falls apart.

  • Dom DiTolla

I’m waiting for the 49ers or the Falcons to make moves up the draft board.

    • scott sinclair

I thought 49ers would have made a move by now. Maybe Jets grab Jarvis Jones? Or do the Chargers take him?

      • Dom DiTolla

Chargers might go with Jones. Definitely need pass-rushing help. Could gamble with Fluker. Vaccaro or Rhodes or Lotulelei could be in play for San Fran trading up.

  • Dom DiTolla

2 guards in the top 10? Wow! No wonder those teams are miserable.

  • Craig

This draft is weird and gives me that icky feeling.

    • Dom DiTolla

I’m anxious to see who falls to #17 overall.

  • Craig

Chargers pick tackle – still suck with Rivers at the helm.

    • Dom DiTolla

Raiders made a good move in terms of being patient for Lotulelei and Floyd. Still didn’t receive enough for the 3rd overall pick though.

  • Dom DiTolla

If the Raiders take D.J. Hayden, I’ll laugh so hard. Typical Raiders.

    • Craig

      Oh they will.

      • Dom DiTolla

I guess jagoffery reigns supreme in Oakland.

  • Craig

So Geno will probably fall to 16 and the Bills. If not then…. *pulling neck collar*

    • Dom DiTolla

Lol. Getting the “Brady Quinn” treatment.

  • Craig

    LOLOLOLOLOLOL’s

    • Dom DiTolla

I almost spit out my soda!

  • Craig

Are signs pointing to Jones, Patterson or Vacarro? – all three still on the board and five picks away!

    • Dom DiTolla

Heck, Lotulelei, Werner, and Rhodes could still be in play as possible “B.P.A.’s”

      • scott sinclair

character question with vaccaro i think rules him out. But man, they have some options!

  • Craig

Jets are on the clock – do they take Smith?! That place will go ka-ray-zeeeeeee if they do.

    • Dom DiTolla

Sanchez will probably be less than thrilled. Then again, butt-fumbling like a champ is not exactly a trait you see in successful starting quarterbacks.

  • Craig

Pretty quiet in New York with that pick.

    • Dom DiTolla

Oh Jets, you run a 3-4 and you take a gap-shooting 3-technique from Missouri. Then again, the Steelers made that idiot mistake with Ziggy Hood 4 years ago so I won’t judge.

      • scott sinclair

don’t get me started on ziggy

        • Dom DiTolla

          Why? Frustrated with him?

  • Dom DiTolla

Carolina is probably losing their shit right now. Lotulelei and Floyd are there for them at #14. They’d be idiots to pass.

  • scott sinclair

jets have no clue…how does this help their offense?
    panthers have to take floyd

    • scott sinclair

      or lotelelei

      • Dom DiTolla

I bet the Saints try to trade back and get more picks. 4-3 team like Minnesota could come up to snag Floyd.

        • Dom DiTolla

Or even the Giants. Probably wouldn’t cost them more than a 3rd round pick.

  • scott sinclair

    steelers…eifert?

    • Dom DiTolla

Maybe. Unless somebody trades up, Bills & Saints likely wont take him.

  • Dom DiTolla

How far will Smith fall is the Bills take Nassib or Barkley at #16? Thoughts?

    • Craig

      2nd round teens.

      • Dom DiTolla

I wonder what the Steelers would do if he was somehow there at #48. They met with him at the Combine and at his Pro Day.

  • Dom DiTolla

Damn Cowboys are likely to get Floyd unless a trade happens.

  • Dom DiTolla

Vaccaro gone. Hopefully the Steelers take S. Thomas, P. Thomas, D.J. Swearinger, or M. Elam if he falls to #48.

    • scott sinclair

I’d love elam but i think he’s gone at 48. the others would be solid

      • Dom DiTolla

Shamarko Thomas reminds me a little bit of Bob Sanders. I do like Phillip Thomas’ ball-hawking ability, and Swearinger is just plain nasty in terms of his hitting.

  • Craig

Steelers deep secondary is in deep trouble.

  • Dom DiTolla

Jones, Eifert, Rhodes, Werner, Patterson, or Hopkins? Steelers do have some solid players to choose from if they stick and stay.

  • Craig

Wow. EJ. Geno Smith’s stock just crashed big time.
