Huddle up!
It’s game day Steeler Nation! Grab your jerseys and your Terrible Towels, put your beverages on ice, and get ready to watch your first units for about the first 10 minutes or so. There are so many things to look out for and look forward to in the first preseason game. Here’s what’s being said about the Steelers around the block.
New bag policy in effect at Heinz Field
Ladies of Steeler Nation, this applies to you, and of course the men who like to jam their belongings into their lady’s purse right before leaving the house or the tailgate, you know who you are. There’s a new bag rule in effect for Steelers games, and any other events at Heinz Field for that matter. You are not allowed to enter the stadium with a bag that’s larger than a hand-sized clutch bag unless it’s made of clear plastic. Naturally, the Steelers stores have the perfect sized clear bags available for purchase with the team’s logo on the side. Obviously, the measures are being taken for security reasons, so if you’re not up for the entire crowd at a Steelers game knowing just how many tampons you’re brining to the game, better put them in your pockets instead. Bell gets starting job at RB for preseason opener
Second round pick rookie Le’Veon Bell has been having an impressive training camp so far by all accounts and per Ed Bouchette of the PPG Bell has been rewarded for his efforts so far by getting the starting nod for tonight’s inaugural preseason matchup against the New York Giants. Bell is beyond excited about the opportunity.
"”I can’t wait. It will be my first game dressed as a Pittsburgh Steeler, my debut in the NFL. So, I actually get to show everybody in the world what I’m capable of doing. And I’m so excited for it.”"
Bell is listed as the 5th back on the depth chart but has been seeing a bunch of first-team action so far in camp. Bell has, so far, risen to the occasion. If you’re a football nerd that will spend tonight checking out the different position battles going on and how each player performs, this is certainly an intriguing one.
Five Steelers to watch
Neal Coolong of Behind the Steel Curtain lists the five Steelers worth taking a closer look at in tonight’s game. 1. John Parker Wilson = Coolong points out that after Ben and Bruce are down throwing a handful or so of passes, John Parker Wilson and draft pick Landry Jones will be splitting the rest of the time in tonight’s game. Could a quarterback that was brought in to be a warm body in camp out perform a quarterback drafted in the 4th round? We’ll see tonight. 2. Markus Wheaton = clearly all of the rookies are worth taking a look at in tonight’s game because it will be their first NFL action but the injury to Plaxico Burress has just opened the door for the younger receivers on the team to step up. 3. Reggie Dunn = Coolong points out that if Dunn doesn’t successfully return a kick tonight, his chances of making the roster are slim. Now I don’t think that game 1 of the preseason is really a make-or-break for anybody, that’s more for games 2 and 3, but if Dunn can’t impress in the wide open kick returner position, his services likely will not be used. 4. John Malecki = the local Murrysville kid will get his opportunity to establish himself as a back-up center. 5. Adrian Robinson = Coolong call’s Robinson “Training Camp Darling” and describes the anticipation over what kind of pass rusher Robinson can be in 2013.
