Steelers Make Roster Moves, Trim From 90 to 75

The Steelers trimmed their roster from 90 to 75 earlier today when they released the following players according to the team’s website:

  • OT Mike Farrell
  • OT D’Anthony Batiste
  • WR David Gilreath
  • WR Tyler Shaw
  • WR J.D. Woods
  • CB Ryan Steed
  • LB Stevenson Sylvester
  • QB John Parker Wilson
  • RB Jeremy Wright
  • RB Baron Batch
  • TE Peter Tuitupou

In addition to the releases of those players, Pittsburgh’s brass placed the following injured players on the following lists:

  • ILB Sean Spence (Reserve/PUP)
  • OG Justin Cheadle (Waived/Injured)
  • CB DeMarcus Van Dyke (Waived/Injured)
  • DE Nick Williams (Reserve/Injured)

Overall, most of these moves did not surprise me.  The releases of Batch and Sylvester make sense, especially since neither prospect shined during their respective careers with the franchise.  I figured that J.D. Woods might make the practice squad, but I guess that Reggie Dunn, Justin Brown, and Derek Moye were the “bubble backups” who the Steelers’ coaching staff wanted to keep.  I will say that it is nice to see the team keeping Sean Spence around for one more year.  Another season of rehabilitation should help the inside linebacker, and I am rooting for the former Miami Hurricane to come back strong in 2014.

Silly move to release Sylvester whom is better than Foote, & JP Wilson whom is way better than Landry Jones. Just because Landry Jones is tall & cost us a draft pick he was going to be kept regardless, but he will not be a successful NFL QB because in college he was rattled by imaginary passrushers. Stupid to tie up the clipboard carrier spot for the next 3 years even though he then wont be signed to any NFL contract.

The Sylvester move doesn’t shock me, They didn’t even tender him an RFA deal this offseason. Foote knows the defensive scheme better as well, although he is probably in his last year with the team. Plus if the team had confidence in Sylvester, why did they draft the likes of Sean Spence and Vince Williams after Farrior left?

Jones pick left me scratching my head, especially with guys left on the board at positions of need like inside linebacker and cornerback in round four. The 2014 class is much deeper, and the Steelers would have received “more bang for their buck” had they waited to draft a signal-caller and taken another player at another position of need.
