Pittsburgh Steelers Elect Four Captains According to Bouchette

Although Bouchette did not receive word on whether or not the Steelers selected a special teams captain, I would have to believe that Shaun Suisham would make a good choice after how well he performed throughout the 2012 campaign.  Plus, I am not sure that any members of Pittsburgh’s coverage units deserve such an esteemed honor when one considers how poorly they have collectively played as of late.

As far as the selections of Roethlisberger, Keisel, and Clark are concerned, I think that the Steelers made three solid choices.

Keisel and Clark have been starters on this defense for the last seven seasons, and their leadership will definitely be needed this fall when the Steelers try to work in some younger players at positions like outside linebacker and nose tackle.

The “Big Ben” selections makes sense as well since the veteran quarterback has been the unquestioned leader of this team’s offense for the better part of the last half decade.  Poor off-field judgement in the past aside, Roethlisberger is the most important player on this team and deserves the honor once again in 2013.

The reported selection of Pouncey is a puzzling one to me though.  The Steelers elected an offensive captain who thought that it was a great idea to wear  “FREE HERNANDEZ” apparel with his brother out in public this past summer.  The move however does illustrate some faith that the 24 year old center is ready to assume a leadership role along Pittsburgh’s young offensive line.  I for one am interested to see how the three-time “Pro Bowler” handles his role this fall, especially since he is the team’s most talented player in the offensive trenches.
