Steelers Morning Huddle 9/27/2013

The Steelers will be waking up this morning in London following their overnight flight across the Atlantic with one goal in mind; win the game. If they thought the seven hour flight there was long they should try imagining how much longer the flight home would be at 0-4. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers around the block.

Coordinator’s Corner

Following Thursday’s practice both coordinators addressed the media as they usually do. The Steelers were working on a “normal” beginning of the week routine and didn’t board the plane to London till Thursday evening while the Vikings opted to fly out earlier and practice in London all week. We all know that if the Steelers lose than this travel arrangement will be criticized. I don’t really know if the timing of the travel will really make that much of a difference, but I do know what will certainly prevent any criticism of the travel arrangements and that’s winning. Todd Haley spoke of the addition of Bell to the lineup and how the offense is looking forward to seeing him in action as well as the plan to continue to play musical lineman at the tackle positions. You can listen to Haley’s presser here.

Dick LeBeau was asked about how his team plans to handle Adrian Peterson. He also was asked how the defense continues to strive to get turnovers. LeBeau seems confident they could come at any time.

“I think we’re going to get some turnovers. We’ve had the ball out, we’ve had it bouncing around, but we haven’t gotten it yet. But there’s no question we’ve got to help our guys and get some turnovers and get some field position. No question about it.” – Dick LeBeau

Tackle Troubles

Ray Fittipaldo of the PPG spoke with Steelers tackle Mike Adams about the rotation he now finds himself in with Marcus Gilbert and Kelvin Beachum.

“As a competitor, those are things that motivate you, to get better so they don’t feel like they need to do that. You never want to come out of a game. You just have to rise up.” – Mike Adams

While the move to rotate the tackles is a bit risky because possibly the most important ingredient to a successful offensive line is consistency, the two starting tackles coming out of training camp have played consistently bad. The Steelers have two second round draft picks invested in Adams and Gilbert, which is a ton considering that’s how they rebuild/reload the team; through the draft. If this competition at tackle doesn’t lead to improved performances that’s a lot of wasted talent.

Steelers flying overnight to London

The Steelers boarded their flight to London Thursday evening and by the looks of it, most intend to sleep the flight away. Here’s a tweet from the Steelers official Twtter feed of the team boarding the plane. Get ready for a ton of “Big Ben meets Big Ben” puns all weekend long.
