Will Allen Working Out For Steelers, William Gay Taking First Team Reps

Jim Wexell of SteelCityInsider.net recently tweeted some breaking news regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers and their secondary:

I actually assumed that the Steelers’ brass would probably kick the tires on Will Allen after he was released by the Dallas Cowboys earlier this week. Allen started seven games for the Steelers last fall and racked up 31 tackles, a forced fumble and three passes defensed.

Mike Tomlin has coached Allen in both Tampa Bay (2004-2005) and Pittsburgh (2010-2012), and the Steelers have seemed intent on bringing back many re-treads in recent years (Larry Foote, Antwaan Randle El, Matt Spaeth, Stevenson Sylvester, and William Gay).

Speaking of William Gay, the news that Gay is working out with the first team at right cornerback does not come as a surprise to me either when one considers how dreadful Cortez Allen looked during Pittsburgh’s last game versus Minnesota.

Whether it was missed tackles, blown assignments, or the fact that Jerome Simpson torched him and the rest of the secondary, Allen definitely did not look comfortable in his first game back from the ankle injury he sustained on opening weekend.

It would honestly not shock me at all to see Gay starting this weekend over Allen, especially with the amounts of depth chart changes which have taken place recently.

Dear God what the heck is happening over there? Is Tomlin just taking a grenade and chucking it into the locker room?!

    • Dom DiTolla

I think he’s just daring the front office to fire him. He’s probably making a sick game out of it. Lol.

Don’t even joke about that! LeBeau needs to go. I blame a lot of the defense’s problems on him. When you don’t give the young guys significant playing time until their rookie contract is about up, you lose a lot of potentially good people.

I personally think Gay has been playing fairly well so far this season. Probably gone under the radar with everyone else making mistakes on both sides of the ball. I know Gay is our favorite whipping boy and has a history of getting beat deep, but after Stephen Hill no Jets receivers are scary. Gay is a better tackler than Cortez, and although I still have high hopes for Cortez, maybe it’s best to put him back in the nickel until he’s re-acclimated to the defense. As far as Will Allen goes, nothing wrong with bringing back a familiar face who did well when called upon his previous years. A shake up is what the team needs, it’s not outrageous at all to have Gay working ahead of Allen given Allen’s performance against Minnesota.

“Gay is a better tackler than Cortez”…. au contraire

      Exhibit A:

You’re showing him being trucked by a guy twice his size who happens to be the best runningback on the planet, lmao. Not to mention that was what, three years ago? This season Gay has made several stop in the backfield and certainly not missed any tackles that turned into long touchdown runs. I still believe Allen will be a good one, but like I said, re-acclimate him first. He wasn’t ready against Minnesota and it showed. When Jerome Simpson owns you and you can bring down Greg Jennings when you have the time and the angle to make a tackle, yeah, I believe Gay should start for a game or two.

        • Craig

I did say ‘Exhibit A’. There are many more examples out there. Ray Rice has busted him over numerous times – and shouldn’t it be expected that our ‘top’ defense stop ball carriers no matter what their ‘skill’ set? The real issue is that Gay is not the answer either and that the Steelers were ill advised to bring him back when they lost Lewis.

          • Dom DiTolla

Guys, guys, guys, let’s all agree on one thing: Gay and both of the Allens are just awful and will do nothing to turn this team’s fortunes around. Lol.
