Bears Sign OT Joe Long Off Pittsburgh’s Practice Squad

The Chicago Bears were apparently in need of some extra offensive linemen. To hedge their bets while they attempt to make a postseason push, Chicago’s brass signed offensive tackle Joe Long off of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad according to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.

Signed as a free agent back in November of 2012 by the Steelers, Long had been a member of Pittsburgh’s practice squad until he was inked by the Bears to a two-year contract yesterday.

The brother of Jake Long of the St. Louis Rams, Long (6’5″ 304 lbs.) was considered a developmental prospect when he came out of Wayne State University back in 2012. Signed as a free agent back in November of that year by the Steelers, Long had been a member of Pittsburgh’s practice squad until he was inked by the Bears to a two-year contract.

Although Long never played in a regular season game for the Steelers, his departure does leave the team with only one offensive lineman on their practice squad in the form of offensive guard Chris Hubbard.
