Draft position needs
ESPN’s Scott Brown is doing a series covering the positions the Steelers might be looking to draft with their 9 picks in the 2014 NFL Draft. We’re still over a week away from the big day so why not spend that time going over any and every detail inside and outside of the draft? Brown details the safety position and explains how the signing of Mike Mitchell probably takes the Steelers out of safety shopping in this year’s draft, especially for the first round. You never know what’s going to happen in the later rounds depending on who is available but considering the money spent on Mitchell, the expectations on Shamarko Thomas, and keeping veteran Will Allen around, Brown puts the draft likelihood of a safety to the Steelers at medium, whatever that means.
Ike Taylor thinks Steelers will draft CB in the 1st round
Steelers CB Ike Taylor has his weekly spot on TribLiveRadio and last week he used it to throw his hat into the draft discussion ring. He’s pretty confident the Steelers will go cornerback with the 15th pick, taking either Bradley Roby, Darqueze Dennard, or Justin Gilbert to join Taylor in the Steelers secondary.
History says Steelers go offense in the first round of draft
Keeping in the all draft, all the time theme Behind the Steel Curtain’s Neal Coolong explained how if the Steelers actually do pick a cornerback with the 15th pick, it will be uncharacteristic of them, history-wise. Coolong details how when the Steelers traded up in 2006 to draft Santonio Holmes it was the first time they had drafted consecutive offensive players in the first round because they had drafted Heath Miller with their first pick the year before. Since then, Tomlin and Colbert have steadily alternated between offense and defense in the first round each year. Last year’s first round pick was LB Jarvis Jones so going by that trend; the Steelers are going offense with the first pick. At this point, there has been so many mocks and evaluations and speculations, this doesn’t seem all that farfetched to me.
