Steelers Morning Huddle 6/8/2014

Steelers season goes all year long so whether we’re breaking down draft choices, recapping OTA’s, or looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold we’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers around the block.

Coaching Staff Quotes

Mike Prisuta caught up with some of the Steelers coaching staff following the second week of OTA’s. Coach Tomlin spoke about Lawrence Timmons switching from the “Mack” to “Buck” linebacker positions to make room for first round pick Ryan Shazier.

“Lawrence showed his versatility a year ago after we lost Larry Foote. We’re very comfortable with being able to move Lawrence around to accommodate whoever he’s working with. I think he’s earned that and proven that over the course of his career. It’s about getting the very best players on the field. Make no mistake; Lawrence Timmons is going to be on the field.” – Mike Tomlin

Assistant head coach/d-line coach John Mitchell had a pretty strong comparison of Stephon Tuitt:

“I think he’s a young Aaron Smith, probably a little better speed. From the lower body down he’s strong. He can run. He has long arms. He can knock down a lot of passes. This guy in shape in the right frame of mind is a heck of a football player.” – John Mitchell

Vince Williams fighting for position

As Ray Fittipaldo of the PPG points out, Vince Williams had a better statistical rookie season last year than Jarvis Jones. But, he now finds himself fighting for a roster spot now that the Steelers have drafted Ryan Shazier and Sean Spence looks to return from his injury. Shazier has already gotten work with the first team defense ahead of Williams, who expected to be in competition regardless of how the draft turned out. Should be an interesting battle in training camp to see who the odd man out of the inside linebackers is.
