Don’t Be Surprised If Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Adams Is Done

If there was one player on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster that could hit the “Reset” button on their NFL career, Mike Adams would probably bowl everyone over in order to get to it first.

But that’s just the problem, even then he wouldn’t be able to muster the strength and ability to bowl anyone over.  Not for the push of that big shiny red button and certainly not on the football field.

Adams was probably hoping (praying even?) for a big shift in his game during this camp.  Adams doesn’t become a free agent until 2016, but his performance since he started in the NFL has been one Roethlisberger blind side sack injury away from abysmal.  His off the field troubles certainly does not help his case and is only added pressure to the team and its PR machine in trying to keep a clean sheet.

Based on how he’s been performing thus far in camp, Adams is on the verge of finding himself cut from this squad.

I’m guessing you are asking yourself, “Who’s Howard Jones?”  And then that’s when I reply with, “Exactly.”  Howard Jones is a lightweight rookie linebacker, who burned a 3rd year former 2nd round draft pick.  A guy that Adams should easily handle.  Not to discount Jones, but let’s be real about the expectations of Adams.

I think many of us hoped that new offensive line coach Mike Munchak would be able to make huge improvements for this offensive line – and he probably is.  But in Adams’ case, it does not appear like Munchak is a miracle worker.  He’s one of the best positional coaches out there, and if he can’t help Adams, then who can?  My guess is nobody.

It’s a real shame.  Nobody wants any of the players on their team to be busts.  But, I think it’s safe to say that no one will miss Adams if he gets the ax.  Depth is always a concern on this line, and the loss of Adams leaves a hole…. on paper.  His presence on this line and in the game is a liability to the success of this franchise and especially to the health of Ben Roethlisberger.  I think the coaches will really consider that, and if there’s a rookie who’s showing quite a bit of promise after a few preseason games, such as Emmanuel McCray, Adams might not even make it past the first cut down to 75 players.
