Steelers season goes all year long so whether we’re wrapping up the day of training camp, predicting roster moves, or looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold we’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers around the block.
Friday Night Lights
The Steelers are gearing up for their annual “Friday Night Lights” practice held at Latrobe Memorial Stadium says Teresa Varley. The event always draws a crowd and it’s important for fans to remember that it’s the only practice where admission is charged. Its $5 for adults and $2 for senior citizens, kids five and under are free. The charge is for the practice to be held at Latrobe’s high school grounds rather than Saint Vincent. The players board school buses from camp over to the high school reminiscent of their high school playing days. The practice ends with the always popular goal-line drill and a fireworks show.
ESPN Steelers reporter Scott Brown gives us his take on the fifth day of work for the Steelers in Latrobe. His observations include Shamarko Thomas getting after it during the offense’s running of no-huddle. You’d expect to some degree during camp and practices that the defense has an edge knowing what the offense is going to do but it’s good to hear the second-year safety is going strong so far this year. The Steelers have suffered some minor injuries so far in camp, mostly to the tight end position with Rob Blanchflower sustaining a high-ankle sprain Wednesday and undrafted free agent TE Eric Waters left practice on Thursday with a lower back injury.
Trib reporter Mark Kaboly brings us his observations from training camp. He concludes that Daniel McCullers is a “monster of a man,” which wasn’t actually a mystery considering we all heard about his stature when he was drafted but apparently the big man did show up to play. He’s been active in pass blocking drills and 11-on-11 live tackling as well. According to Kaboly he could work on his quickness but that will definitely come with time.
