Steelers season goes all year long so whether we’re wrapping up the day of training camp, predicting roster moves, or looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold we’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers around the block.

Tomlin’s Takeaways

Teresa Varley gives us Coach Tomlin’s top four takes for the upcoming preseason matchup against the New York Giants.

  1. Rookies playing time = Most notably on the injury report this week has been Ryan Shazier, who’s “boo boo” has kept him sidelined all week. He’s currently listed as questionable for the game but I’d predict that they keep him sidelined just to be on the safe side.
  2. Jason Worilds all about business = Tomlin says that Jason Worilds has taken a “business-like” approach to this season’s preparation while currently being under the transition tag and not having an extended deal in place yet.
  3. Troy Polamalu will play = While Tomlin has been very mindful of holding Polamalu out of contact drills in practice to conserve his health, don’t expect the 33-year old safety to sit out of the entire preseason.
  4. Return of the Spence = Sean Spence will make his return to the football playing field on Saturday night in New York. All of Steeler Nation will be rooting for this kid to make it out of preseason healthy and ready for his first official regular season.

Don’t play to win preseason games

While there isn’t much reason why score is kept in preseason games it’s still a good idea to put a unit on the field with the mindset to win the game as ESPN’s Scott Brown explains. The 2013 Steelers failed to do that at all in the preseason and carried that winless drought well into October. But, when it comes down to it we all need to remember that this is a different group. What happened last season has no bearing on the 2014 Steelers so while a win in August sure is fun to get everyone hyped up for the season; it’s the September wins that actually count.
