Pittsburgh Steelers Make More Roster Cuts

The Pittsburgh Steelers made the rest of their necessary roster cuts to get within the league-mandated 75 players for Tuesday’s deadline. The team cut nine players first thing Tuesday morning and trimmed the remaining six from the roster just at the deadline.

The released players are:

  • OL Chris Elkins
  • OL Emmanuel McCray
  • DL Hebron Fangupo
  • DL Brian Arnfelt
  • LS Luke Ingram
  • RB Tauren Poole

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin had hinted in his earlier press conference that the team could expect to see Long Snapper Greg Warren return from his torn meniscus in time for the regular-season opener so that seems to be why the services of Luke Ingram were no longer needed.

Tauren Poole had shown some flashes in preseason and camp, but clearly not enough to survive the roster cuts and you’d expect the defensive line to cut some outliers with the return of Brett Keisel to the locker room. Mike Tomlin explained in his earlier presser that he intends to play Brett Keisel for an extended period of time in Thursday’s preseason finale, which will be the defensive lineman’s first game back since signing with the team last week.

“I’m interested in taking him [Keisel] to the deep end of the pool to see if he can swim a little bit. We’ll see how he does.” – Mike Tomlin

Thursday night will also determine the roster spots for several other players hoping to make the 53-man roster. While the majority of starters are most likely to see little-to-no-time on the field, the fourth preseason game is where the remaining jobs are won and lost.
