Fast starts key
Teresa Varley explains how Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has stressed to the team how important a strong start to the season is. The fact that the Steelers started last year 0-4 and then were not able to dig themselves completely out of that hole to put themselves into the playoff picture could not illustrate better how much a strong start can benefit a team in the regular season. Last time the Steelers won their opening game of the NFL season was 2010. I’d say a strong start is downright must.
Brett Keisel is No. 2 on depth chart
ESPN’s Scott Brown tells us how newly re-signed veteran defensive end Brett Keisel is a reserve on the depth chart. Keisel is listed as Cam Thomas’ backup at right defensive end. Stephon Tuitt is listed as Cameron Heyward’s backup at left defensive end. Brown also suggests that Tomlin is likely to have all six linemen on the roster dress on Sunday and the four ends to rotate.
Offense could be strength
The Trib’s Alan Robinson suggests that the strength of the 2014 Steelers should and might just be the offense. Going back on last season the beginning and end of the season were like night and day for the Steelers offense. Naturally, the injuries to Maurkice Pouncey and Le’Veon Bell early on had a negative impact on how the team produced early on last year because the team could barely rush the ball and Ben got sacked so many times it looked like he might not make it to the end of the year. But, after the offensive line woes sorted themselves out and Bell got back on the field the offense was the unit that arguably carried the team through the second half of the season. For 2014, the team can’t afford a slow start from the offense out of the gates.
