Steelers Morning Huddle

It’s Steelers loss hangover morning. I’m not sure if there is a worse Steelers loss hangover than a Steelers loss to the Ravens hangover, especially that game. Even coffee tastes bad. The hottest hot takes are being spewed around left and right. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers for Friday, Sep. 12th.

Tomlin’s post-game quotes

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin spoke following the Steelers 26-6 loss to Baltimore.

"“It was a disappointing effort for us. A lot of self-inflicted wounds are going to prevent you from being in football games like that. We turned the ball over too often. We were highly penalized, particularly on the drives that they were able to manufacture and produce points. We were highly penalized defensively. Those two things are a lethal combination. You turn the ball over, you are highly penalized, you’re extending drives. You are going to lose football games like that and we did tonight. I’m not going to accept it, they can’t accept it. It happened tonight, but we’ve got to make the necessary corrections to move forward and make sure it doesn’t happen again. These games are too precious.” – Mike Tomlin"

Tomlin addressed the injuries briefly. Steve McLendon has a shoulder injury that didn’t allow him to return to the game. The rest of the injuries were “bumps and bruises” and McLendon’s injury is still being evaluated.

Steelers report card in Ravens loss

Gerry Dulac of the PPG handed out grades to the Steelers following the Thursday night loss. The overall grade was a “D”. Ben Roethlisberger gets a “D” for his performance in which he could not generate anything for the sixth consecutive quarter. The Steelers scored no touchdowns and Ben’s longest completion was a 19-yard catch-and-run by Le’Veon Bell. The wide receivers were graded a “C-“ as the team lost Antonio Brown for part of the game while he was evaluated for a possible concussion. He caught 7 passes for 90 yards. Markus Wheaton caught five passes for 38 yards and didn’t have a reception in the second half. Then there is Justin Brown, in for the injured Lance Moore, who fumbled a 6-yard pass in the red zone, killing the Steelers’ first offensive drive. The linebackers and secondary both get a “D” for the little to no pressure on Joe Flacco, who wasn’t sacked the entire game, the missed coverage on the Ravens’ tight ends, and the secondary for their penalties. The secondary racked up four personal foul penalties in total. The coaches also get a “D”. The big worry going into this game was how the team would hold up against the no-huddle, but Flacco barely ran any. Still, the Steelers offense has been basically non-existent since the first half of the Cleveland game.

CBS Sports James Brown’s message on domestic violence

What might be lost amid the moronic Baltimore Ravens fans proudly wearing their Ray Rice jerseys and the handful of Ravens players who “dedicated” their win to Ray Rice on Thursday night was a plea by James Brown to do something about domestic violence in wake of the scandal that has rocked the NFL. He explained that he made a challenge two years ago to the NFL to confront this problem after the murder-suicide of Kansas City Chiefs Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins. The problem is that we need to address the culture that keeps allowing these incidents to happen. The same culture that allowed seemingly intelligent men in the NFL front office to have to wait to see a video tape of something they had described in police and grand jury reports because they ultimately wanted to see if Janay Rice had done something to warrant being knocked out. The same culture that devalues women and lacks the education “about what healthy, respectful manhood is all about.”
