Steelers Game Day Grub: Pulled Pork

facebooktwitterreddit

While you’re waiting all day, or all week rather, for Sunday night your mind will naturally wander to thoughts of what kind of tasty treats will you be enjoying for game day. I seriously can’t stand Sunday Night games because it seems like halftime isn’t until 11:45 and I’m apparently an old person now that gets cranky when I have to stay up too late. Also I have a firm belief that football should be played on Sunday afternoons just because I’d prefer it that way. But, we can’t dictate the schedule and the Steelers are always going to get nationally televised games because they’re such a big draw ratings-wise so they’re bound to end up in prime time a few games each year. Since you have to wait all week for Sunday and then wait all day for the game, you’re going to get hungry. Because the Steelers are traveling to Carolina to take on the Panthers, it’s got to be BBQ for game time.

I don’t pretend to be any kind of authority on BBQ in the least bit. I just so happen to be a fan of the Carolina-style BBQ sauce that is typically vinegar/mustard based and not all thick and gloopy like other kinds. So it only seems natural that for the Steelers vs. Panthers game, we get down on some pulled pork!

This recipe comes from my cousin, Aimee, who is awesome and is doing her part in raising some of the next generation of Steelers fans and makes some tasty pulled pork. You can throw this in your slow cooker in the morning and it will be tasty and delicious by game time. You’ll need a bone-in pork butt, which isn’t actually the pig’s rear-end at all, it’s the shoulder. I wouldn’t recommend eating the butt of any animal, no matter how tasty the dry-rub is. For the dry rub you’ll need salt, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, paprika, parsley, and a pinch of sugar. Make enough of the dry rub to cover the entire butt in it like a crust. A butt crust, if you will. Not to be confused with a butt fumble, this would be appropriate if the Steelers were up against Mark Sanchez. Throw that sucker in a crock pot with a cup of water, a cup of your favorite BBQ sauce, 2 whole garlic cloves and one whole onion cut into chunks. Set it and forget it for 6-8 hours depending on the size of the butt while you watch the early games. At the end the bone should slide completely out and you can shred the meat to your desired meat shreddedness.

You can add more sauce as you assemble it into a sammich, and I’d even add some coleslaw on top because that’s just how I roll. Use your favorite BBQ sauce and coleslaw recipes, or find them yourself. I can’t do everything for you. What I will recommend is some soft potato-rolls lightly buttered and toasted because everything should be lightly buttered and toasted and so that the sauce doesn’t run out of the sammich causing all kinds of stains and having to use a million napkins.

Enjoy the game and the grub! Here we go Steelers! Here we go!
