Next Man Up

It only took three weeks into the regular season for the NFL until the phrase “Next man up” came up. That’s actually an improvement for the Steelers, who were searching for center replacements within 10 minutes of the start of the season last year. In this case, the team is looking for Arthur Moats and Sean Spence to step up on the defense for Jarvis Jones and Ryan Shazier. Jones was placed on the injured reserve-designated for return list with a wrist injury and Shazier will miss some time due to a sprained MCL. As Teresa Varley points out, Spence is understanding to having to deal with injuries.

"“It’s part of the game. I have been through a lot of injuries and I know sometimes it happens. It’s a learning experience and you have to find a way to grow from it. It’s very tough, especially to guys you care for, go to battle with every day. To see them have injuries, like Ike Taylor, and to see Jarvis go down, it hurt.” – Sean Spence"

Right time for Harrison

While the Steelers and James Harrison couldn’t come to terms the offseason before last and no offers were even discussed this offseason before Harrison returned to Steelers facility earlier this month to officially retire ESPN Reporter Scott Brown says the timing is right now for Harrison to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s not exactly an ideal situation, given that if anyone had their choice we wouldn’t have asked for Jarvis Jones, Ryan Shazier and Ike Taylor go down in the same game but Harrison even at 36 is still a good pick up for depth in the linebacker position given his insane physical condition and the fact that he already knows the defense. Harrison is set to meet with the Steelers today and will most likely be signing this week to the team.

The real Steelers stood up

DK on Pittsburgh Sports’ Dejan Kovacevic explains that the Steelers had a victory on Sunday night that was about as complete for all phases of the team as one can be. Each unit excelled in one way or another. The offense, scoring touchdowns since their 9 quarter draught along with the running game accumulating 100+ yards for both Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount, the defense creating turnovers and  getting pressure on the quarterback and special teams even kicked in with a turnover in addition to Shaun Suisham’s consistent leg and Brad Wing’s excellent punts. It’s not as if the team won anything other than just one game but with a win like that the challenges of the season looks a bit more manageable. Just as long as the team can continue to play “good Steelers football.”
