Steelers Game Day Grub: Meatballs

It’s inevitable that you’re going to get hungry while watching your Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. You’re going to want something tasty and delicious and not easily spillable like a bowl of chips or popcorn if God forbid the Steelers crap the bed once again against a crappy team.

That’s not going to happen, though. Think positive thoughts. And, while you’re at it, think delicious food thoughts as well. It’s pretty much impossible to come up with a Jacksonville-themed dish to prepare since Jacksonville isn’t really known for anything. It’s pretty much the crappiest city in Florida.

Since the Steelers need to keep it simple this Sunday and just friggin win, it’s best to keep the food simple and there’s no better simple football-snack food than cocktail wieners and meatballs. These things are delicious and require minimal effort from you. I brought these to a potluck party at a bar once and people lost their friggin minds over them and I was not even a little bit ashamed to take the credit for them although they are the easiest suckers to throw together in ever.

What you’ll need:

  • Bag of frozen meatballs (don’t even bother making a batch of meatballs for this)

and/or

  • 1 package of cocktail wieners (beef or pork, doesn’t really matter)
  • 1 jar of grape jelly (I know it’s weird, don’t be afraid of the deliciousness)
  • 1 jar of Heinz Chili Sauce (yes Heinz, no other brands are appropriate)
  • Slow cooker or large pot
  • About 30 minutes time at least
  • 1 package of toothpicks

You throw the wieners or meatballs in the slow cooker, throw in the jar of jelly and chili sauce and let it all cook down and melt and become the tastiest, sweet and sour concoction of meat loveliness you’ll have all day. Sounds so weird but tastes so good.

There you have it. Cook those babies up and throw them out on a platter or keep them in the slow cooker for your tailgate and provide people with the toothpicks necessary to pick out a delicious meatball or seven and you have yourself some tasty grub.

Enjoy the game and the grub!
