What We Learned in Week 7 in the NFL:

  • Seattle trades Percy Harvin; immediately releases what a jerk he is
  • Browns suffer immediate Super Bowl hangover

  • DeMarco Murray making history
  • Peyton Manning breaks all-time TD record, can’t get the ball back
  • Ravens take top spot in AFC North, second spot open for Steelers to take

More from Still Curtain

The first, and probably only, blockbuster trade occurred in the NFL this week when the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks traded wide receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets for some pocket lint and an EZ-Pass for the NJ Turnpike. Almost immediately following the trade, reports started circulating about what a complete a-hole Harvin was in the locker room and on the field. This is the kind of thing is so unnecessary. For a team to spend however long the Seahawks spent selling Harvin and his talents to teams around the league in order to successfully orchestrate the trade and then immediately turn around and leak reports that he was a jerk and had altercations with other players just seems tacky to me. Naturally, I’m curious to see what kind of train wreck this is going to turn out in New York as their locker room doesn’t quite strike me as the type that could handle such a volatile player, but I’m sure they’ve got a plan for that. In response to the trade the Seahawks went to St. Louis and got handed their third loss of the season thanks to a very slow start by the Seattle offense and some tricky plays by the Rams special teams.

The Cleveland Browns won their Super Bowl last week when they spanked our Pittsburgh Steelers at home. The narrative immediately went to how legitimate the Browns were as contenders and how the tides might be turning there on the Mistake on the Lake. Instead of going to Disney World following their Super Bowl victory, the Browns went to Jacksonville and preceded to Browns it up all over the place and hand Jacksonville their first victory of the year. Never change Cleveland, never change.

How demoralizing must a tie be to a team? Probably not as bad as going out and getting shut out the following week would be. That’s exactly what the Cincinnati Bengals did after their tie game last week. Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts didn’t have a super stellar offensive performance in the first half with neither team able to convert on a third down until the third quarter. However, the Colts proved to be deeper and more prepared than the Bengals, who were playing without A.J. Green. Tell me again how the Bengals are Super Bowl contenders?

The Dallas Cowboys DeMarco Murray became the first player in NFL history to begin the season with seven consecutive 100-yard rushing games as the Cowboys were able to knock off the New York Giants in Jerry’s World on Sunday. The Cowboys are 6-1 and probably won’t be looking at another 8-8 season but boy can’t you just see the epic first-round playoff loss off in the distance? It’s there, Romo knows it’s there.

In the midst of a rout against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night, Peyton Manning made NFL history of his own by throwing a record 509th touchdown pass. What do his teammates do to celebrate him? Play keep away with the 509 ball. Peyton Manning pretty much has solidified his place as the greatest quarterback of all time in the NFL, if you completely disregard the playoffs entirely. Well done, Peyton, now go make another funny commercial. Chicken parm you taste so good.

The Ravens were able to grab ahold of the top spot in the AFC North on Sunday thanks to several “Joe Flacco Specials” which entail heaving the ball down the field and either hoping for a pass interference call or for Torrey Smith or Steve Smith to make some kind of insane grab and do all the work from there in their win over the Atlanta Falcons. This sets up the Steelers to, believe it or not, take the second spot in the division with a win tonight over the Houston Texans. The Steelers can go from worst to not worst and set themselves up to be in a much better position for when they have to face the Ravens again in two weeks if they’re able to come out tonight with a victory.

Here we go Steelers! Here we go!
