Steelers Grades, More Le’Veon Bell, Things to Know

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a short week for Week 8 in the NFL coming off of their Monday Night Football win to face the Indianapolis Colts. Grading the Steelers
ESPN Steelers Reporter Scott Brown handed out grades for the Steelers in their 30-23 win over the Houston Texans on Monday night. Overall I’d say he was pretty fair. Ben Roethlisberger got a B+, could have even gone with a lower grade in my opinion considering Ben fumbled at one point and did have a very slow start to the offense. But, he is 6-0 on Monday night at Heinz Field. The running backs got a B- mostly because the ground game just wasn’t there for the Steelers Monday night, Bell’s overall contributions, however, are another story. The offensive line gets a C for adequately adjusting to losing Marcus Gilbert and containing J.J. Watt for most of the second half of the game. They didn’t excel in their strength at run blocking, and the rushing yards show it. The coaches got a B for the overall effort, which is fair. I agree with Brown with his assessment that the Steelers should have gone for it on 4th and inches in the third quarter instead of standing at the line for the remainder of the play clock to try and draw the Texans offsides and then punting. They have more than enough playmakers to get that first down in that situation.

I have a fever. And the only prescription is more Le’Veon Bell. I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Crusty old Ron Cook of the PPG is singing Bell’s praises as well after he earned 145 yards from scrimmage in the win over the Texans. DeMarco Murray of the Cowboys is clearly the top running back of the league so far this season with seven-100+ yard games but Bell himself has entered at least the Steelers record books. He’s the first player in Steelers history to earn 100+ combined yards from scrimmage in each of the first seven games.

gives us ten things to know about the Steelers win over the Texans. He points out one obvious point that the Steelers were largely not very good for most of the game, but capitalized off of Houston’s mistakes and executed their own plays in that short spurt of scoring that proved to be the difference-maker in the game. Sometimes that’s all it takes in this league to win games. Sure, you want your team to exert their dominance over other teams but sometimes it’s just about making the right plays at the right time or taking advantage of the other team making bad plays or not making plays at the right time. Doesn’t mean you discount this win for the Steelers. He also noted the Troy Polamalu play of jumping over the Texans offensive line at the goal line to try and get a sack but was totally offsides. I don’t have a problem whatsoever with that play. If it works, it’s a hell of a play, and since it didn’t work it just gave them a fresh set of downs and inched them closer to where they were already at. Low risk, high reward. I take that all day every day, just wish he could time it a scooch better.
