Steelers Game Day Grub: BLT Dogs

It’s that time of the week again. Time to start thinking about what you’re going to eat while the Pittsburgh Steelers are battling it out against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. You know you’re going to be hungry, might as well have something tasty to feast on.

Indianapolis doesn’t really bring any particular food to mind so let’s just go with what sounds the best. BLT Dogs. It’s like a hot dog and a BLT got together and had a delicious baby snuggled in a pretzel roll for your tailgating pleasure. I don’t know what the world did before pretzel rolls. More things should come on them, they’re delicious.

These couldn’t be simpler and you could do them at your tailgate or at home, just need a pan to fry up some bacon. Fry up as many pieces as you like, or, you can go with my preferred method of bacon cooking and throw those bad boys in the oven to get all crispy and delicious. Either way, you’ll need to reserve the grease from whatever you cooked your bacon on because you’re going to cook the hot dogs in the bacon grease. You read that right. Say you’ve cooked your bacon on a sheet pan in either the oven or using your grill as an oven at your tailgate; you’ll want to transfer your bacon to a paper-towel-lined plate and pour that grease into a frying pan. Next, add your dogs. Use whatever hot dogs you prefer here. Sauté them over medium to medium-high heat for a few minutes, turning around on all sides to make sure that bacon-grease-goodness gets all over the dogs and they get a little crispy while they cook. This won’t take long, probably 5-7 minutes total.

In the mean-time, you can toast your pretzel hot-dog buns. You could go with regular hot dog buns here but you’re doing yourself a disservice if you openly forgo a pretzel roll experience. That’s on you. Split them open and butter the inside before toasting on either a griddle or the grill and get them nice and toasty. Prepare your favorite BLT condiments (mayor or Miracle Whip, lettuce, and tomato). You can add onions if you do that sort of thing I suppose. I don’t care for them.

To assemble, you just slather your bun with your mayo, or Miracle Whip, we’re not judgy here if you prefer one over the other. Then you’ll add the hot dog and slice of bacon on the side and top with your lettuce and tomato. You’ll want to just go ahead and make at least two for yourself because they’ll go down quickly.

Enjoy the grub and the game!
