Rebuilt with reserves

The Steelers starting secondary today will feature players who started this season as backups. As Ray Fittipaldo of the PPG points out, William Gay, Brice McCain, and Will Allen all started this season as reserves for the Steelers and have all been released by other teams previously. Still, Gay and McCain have stepped into the cornerback roles and not only done well, they’ve thrived. Allen steps in today for the injured Troy Polamalu in the hopes of capitalizing off of facing a Jets team that currently boasts the worst turnover differential in the league.

Steelers vs. Jets by numbers

ESPN’s Scott Brown breaks down the Steelers and Jets matchup by the numbers. The first one that sticks out is the -15 Jets’ turnover differential. Another one is 20; the Steelers’ rank for scoring touchdowns when in the red zone and 30 is the Jets’ rank for allowing teams to score when they enter the red zone. There’s the 65.7 passer rating by the Jets, worst in the NFL. And the 111.9 passer rating by the Steelers, best in the NFL. Why is this game so nerve wracking though?
