Steelers Game Day Grub: Monkey Meat

Now that the bye weeks are over it’s back to business for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the rest of the NFL. Currently standing in their way of a division title and playoff position are the New Orleans Saints. The Steelers have the early afternoon games for the remainder of their schedule. There’s something so natural about Steelers football on a Saturday afternoon.

Another thing that comes naturally is your hunger while watching or tailgating for the games. You may still be full from Thanksgiving, but you’re still going to want some good football grub for this showdown. New Orleans is known for some great food but what comes to mind for me when I think of New Orleans is the Navy.

We lived there for a short period of time while I was in high school when my father was stationed in New Orleans. The best part of growing up in the Navy is all the barbeques and picnic functions we went to growing up.

So with turkey or any kind of poultry being the last thing on my mind and Navy picnics from my childhood present in my mind I suggest for your Steelers party or tailgate, some monkey meat. I have no idea why it’s called monkey meat but this was present at just about every summer picnic or barbeque from my childhood and it’s delicious.

Monkey Meat

You’ll need about 3 pounds of either London broil or a Flank steak, cut into chunks in a dish to marinade overnight. You’re going to add four minced garlic cloves and equal parts of enough soy sauce and 7up to cover all of the meat.

You should pre-skewer the meat if you’re using wooden skewers so that they can soak in the liquid at the same time and not burn on the grill when cooking. Also so your hands don’t get all funky skewering already marinated meat.

When it’s time to break out the grill at your tailgate or Steelers party you’re only going to cook these about 2-3 minutes per side and if you have an Asian market near you, try to get your hands on some lumpia and pancit to go along with the monkey meat.

Lumpia is like a Filipino egg roll and pancit is similar to fried rice. They’re both friggin delicious and will spice up your tailgate better than boring burgers and dogs could ever do!

Enjoy the game and the grub! Here we go Steelers! Here we go!
