Steelers Look For Revenge Against The Chiefs

A field goal that went wide left and the Steelers miss the playoffs.  Thankfully, it wasn’t place kicker Shaun Suisham who missed that playoff clinching field goal.  But, instead it was Ryan Succop of the Kansas City Chiefs who missed what would have been the game winning field goal against the San Diego Chargers.  That would have put the Steelers into the playoffs with an 8-8 record.

Steeler Nation has a lot to be mad at Kansas City for that game.  Andy Reid, knowing that the playoffs were locked up for his Chiefs decided to sit some of his offensive and defensive starters.  Kansas City still came out flying scoring 21 first half points and taking a seven point lead into the locker room at halftime.  They sputtered, however, and let the Chargers score 10 unanswered points in the second half to tie the game.  You know the rest…

More from Still Curtain

Of course Steelers fans should be more angry at the 8-8 egg the Steelers laid last season when they had multiple opportunities throughout the season to take command.  An 0-4 start and 2-6 first half of the season didn’t help either.  But, the sting of that Kansas City rollover is still fresh for many – including myself.

There’s no reason to really discuss this as a game of Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley facing his old squad.  That already played out in Haley’s first season with the Steelers when the Black & Gold defeated the Chiefs 16-13 at Heinz Field.  The Chiefs are returning to Heinz for a rare conference game that does not flip the home and home.  The Steelers will gladly take the advantage, though things have been rough at home lately.

The Steelers don’t need anymore motivation this week to trounce the Chiefs and their playoff hopes.  The Steelers need just one win to clinch the 6th seed in the Wild Card slot.  They will be completely focused on winning this game against Kansas City.  Kansas City needs to win out to take at least the 6th seeded and could even go as far as locking up the 5th seed should certain teams lose over the next two weeks.  Much is at stake in Pittsburgh for both teams.

But, I’m sure some of those players in the Steelers locker room are hoping that their playoff clinching win will be a little sweeter when it comes at the hands of the team that kept them out last season.  When asked, players are brushing it off…. but I’m going to guess that a few pops and hits on those KC guys will have a little extra “umph” in them come Sunday.
