Steelers Game Day Grub: Sausage and Peppers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an AFC North showdown set for Sunday night against the Cincinnati Bengals. Winner gets the AFC North crown, 3rd seed in the playoffs and a home playoff game that goes with it. I know you’re getting hungry just thinking about it.

Since we’re all done wrapping and unwrapping presents and have eaten all the turkey and ham that can be eaten in one holiday season let’s keep it simple for this game day. I had a tasty breakfast recipe planned for this game but now that it’s in prime time we have to switch gears.

Sunday night the Steelers will host the Bengals for the AFC North division title and the team is planning on thanking Steelers fans who attend the game with all kinds of goodies at the stadium. Outside the stadium you’ll be sure to find at multiple tailgates a Pittsburgh favorite; sausage and peppers.

No Pittsburgh tailgate is complete without them. You can’t just throw some regular old hot dogs on a grill and call yourself a tailgater around these parts. These are so simple you can make them the day before or all day long while you’re waiting for Sunday night and then just make sure you have some great hoagie buns to hold these puppies and their luscious sauce.

Take some hot Italian sausage and brown them in a pan. Don’t worry about cooking them through at this point because they’ll cook the whole way in the slow cooker. Just get a nice, good crust on all sides. Next you’ll take some onions and green peppers and do the same, sauté them in the same pan you cooked the sausage.

Crock Pot Sausage and Peppers

Throw everything in a crock pot with your favorite jarred marinara sauce and set it and forget it! Let those babies simmer and bubble away while you pick out what jersey you’re going to wear for the game. You can also take this time to go to your favorite bakery and get some fresh buns. Never underestimate the difference a tasty bun makes in something as simple as sausage and peppers.

If you’re having people over your house for the game just set out the crock pot with some tongs so people can fish out their sausage and peppers, maybe a spoon to get some of that tasty sauce as well, and the fresh cut rolls. Possibly some sliced provolone cheese because no one has ever said, “No thanks, I don’t want any cheese on that,” in the history of anything, especially tailgating or game day foods. If they have, throw them out of your house. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

When Ben Roethlisberger is throwing the game-winning, division-clinching touchdown to Antonio Brown you’ll be stuffed with tasty sausage and peppers. What a great feeling.

Enjoy the game and the grub!
