Ever wish and pray something you knew would happen wouldn’t happen? Ever hope things might go a certain way even though deep down inside you know they won’t?

That’s how I felt yesterday when the Pittsburgh Steelers announced the resigning of RG Chris Kemoeatu. Yes the man who my astute readers overwhelming didn’t want back next year is coming back for more. And not only is he coming back, his resume full of suck earned him a massive raise. Hey it works for the auto industry, why not the NFL? Why oh why didn’t my mother fall in love with a 6’5 Tongan instead of a 5’5 Italian? Evidently a massive body with no neck nor talent is enough to be paid top dollar by the Super Bowl champions these days.

It’s a 5 year contract for $20 million. Luckily, only $6 million of it is guaranteed so if Kemo performs like he did this year, he can be cut with very little repercussion. But that’s not the point. The point is when there are better players out there for the same price, it boggles my mind why they’d bring this guy back. Loyalty? Potential? Whatever it is, I don’t see it. All I see is him standing motionless as he gets beat for a sack (team high 7.5 surrendered) or flagged for a holding penalty (2nd on the team with 11).

With Kemo locked up and Max Starks franchised, it appears the Steelers are done working on their OL until the draft rolls around in April. They’re about $10 million under the newly adjusted cap but they have to address depth in CB and WR due to impending losses in those areas (Sorry, Maxine). I would have liked to at least bring in one FA lineman to provide some options. I’m not as down on this current bunch as many of you readers are but when any group allows 50+ sacks two years in a row, that’s not good. Let’s be honest, QB Ben Roethlisberger is the franchise. Every time he’s sacked, you’re playing Russian Roulette with your entire season.

I would think the Steelers would be interested in cutting that number down a bit but evidently not. Mark it down right now, your starting Offensive Line for the defending champion 2009 Steelers will be Max Starks, Chris Kemoeatu, Justin Hartwig, Darnell Stapleton, and Willie Colon. Looks like Ben will have to be beheaded before Kevin Colbert and the Steelers braintrust realize our line isn’t very good and make an attempt to fix it. In the meantime, Big Ben should look into purchasing Icy Hot in bulk. He’s definitely gonna need it.

Rejoice, Steeler Nation, our long national nightmare is finally over. Yesterday, the Pittsburgh Steelers came to terms with center Justin Hartwig.

The deal is a reported $4 million dollars for two years, including a $975,000 signing bonus. Once again, our tricky Player Personnel Director, Kevin Colbert, sits back during the early days of free agency, allowing the rotten teams to blow their wads like a virgin on prom night, then swoops in and manages to pick up a quality player at a discount price.

Don’t be fooled by the relative pittance we’re paying him, Hartwig is a fine player who basically became another salary cap casualty. Two years ago, the Carolina Panthers gave Hartwig a five-year/$17 million deal to lure him away from the Titans. They expected him to anchor their line but a nagging groin injury limited him to one start in 2006. Healthy in 2007, he started every game except the season finale. Carolina said he had a knee injury but the smart money says they wanted him to sit so they could take a look at Ryan Kalil as the heir apparent. Evidently they liked what they saw from the kid which made Hartwig, a grand old man of 29, totally expendable.

The entire situation is not unlike what we do here in the ‘Burgh, such as when we cut LB Joey Porter last year because we had a younger cheaper player ready to play. If you have two fairly equal options available, common sense is you go with the newer model. Unless you’re the Raiders, then you pick the old guy because you love veteranosity. But for a team like the Steelers, where our options are either somebody who has never taken an NFL snap at center or the Human Traffic Cone, Sean Mahan, a player the caliber of Hartwig is a huge upgrade.

And make no mistake; Justin Hartwig will be our starting center in 2008.

The Steelers also announced they resigned restricted free agents Chris Kemoeatu and Trai Essex. This pretty much completes our restructuring of the offensive line for next season. Colbert will almost certainly draft an OLineman with our first round pick but now he won’t be expected to start until 2009. Mahan, who to be fair is a natural guard, will compete with the Samoan Bulldozer (Kemoeatu) for the spot vacated by LG Alan Faneca. If he fails, there will be temptation to cut him considering at about $3.3 million/year, he’s being overpaid by about $3 million. However, our depth is pretty weak and he can back-up both G and C so he might be worth keeping around. Mister Transition, Max Starks, looks to be our starting LT, thus bringing our grand total to three new starters on the line this coming season.

Hopefully these changes will cut down our ridiculously high sack totals from last year where Ben Roethlisberger had about a 50-50 chance of ending up on his magnificiently sculpted ass on any given play. Considering we just paid Ben the approximate gross national product of Latvia to be our quarterback for the next decade, I’m sure keeping him healthy and upright is something of interest to the Steelers. With these strategically considered off-season moves, I feel much better that they succeeded in their goal. Let’s face it, True Believers, things really have nowhere to go but up.

Today, Ben Roethlisberger became the highest-paid Pittsburgh Steeler ever, as well as one of, if not the highest, paid players in the NFL. NFL contracts being only slightly simpler to understand than the tax code, it’s unclear whether or not Ben has the absolute highest paying contract in the NFL, but he’s definitely up there. To be specific, $102 million over eight seasons, $36 million in guaranteed money, and a $25 million signing bonus. A lot of money, to be sure, but the way the NFL is going, it won’t seem as high in six years towards the end of Ben’s contract as it does now, and totally in line with what is expected for a franchise quarterback with a Super Bowl win who’s been playing at a level with the best of the best in the NFL this past year.

After years of mediocre quarterbacks in Pittsburgh, it’s great to know that the Steelers finally have an elite quarterback, and they’re going to have him for the long haul. Big Ben pulled the Steelers up on his back more than a couple times this season, and is more responsible for their successes this past season than any other player. As long as he’s playing in Pittsburgh, they’re going to be contending for the post-season, and if the right cast ends up around him, another Super Bowl ring or two.

This leaves the Steelers with only 2.4 million left under their salary cap, so they probably couldn’t have afforded to keep Alan Faneca, even if they wanted to. And they didn’t want to. He’s historically been one of the best at his position, but he slipped this past season, and the New York Jets will likely not improve their team by his addition relative to the $40 million they’re going to pay him. As great as Faneca has been, the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, to name two teams, have had great successes recently with relatively unknown guards. The bottom line is, Faneca won’t help the Jets make a Super Bowl run, and when you’re spending that kind of money, you want a player that helps make your team a Super Bowl contender. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Ironically, the player hurt the most by the lack of cap room is Ben Roethlisberger, who badly needs a couple better receivers and an improved offensive line. In a normal year, the Steelers wouldn’t get any big-name free agents because that’s simply not the way they do things; this could be the one year where they really can’t afford to get any big-name free agents.

In a related note, the Steelers may be a little smarter than we thought, because they’re preparing to remove the transition tag from Max Starks. They never intended to pay Starks a ton of money; they just put the tag on him to let him know that they didn’t want him to leave and to make it difficult for another team to make him an offer while they were negotiating.

On the other hand, Steelers management may be as dumb as we think they are, because they just re-signed Nate Washington, when the thing that would have helped the Steelers most would have been if Nate Washington became a free agent and signed to the Cleveland Browns.

In case you haven’t heard by now, the local television station in Green Bay, Wisconsin pulled Saturday’s syndicated episode of “Seinfeld” because it’s New York Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning’s favorite show. Apparently they hoped to throw off Manning’s game (and didn’t realize that the show is actually available on DVD now). But what they should have worried about is the very real possibility that Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Farve might also be a “Seinfeld” fan, because he was definitely off during the NFC Championship game last night. Farve seemed bothered by the sub-zero temperatures and played sloppily all night, culminating in an overtime interception that ended up giving the win to the Giants. Despite Farve’s lackluster play, the national media seems to have largely given him a pass on that, probably because they spent most of the season building him up. And the build-up wasn’t undeserved, but don’t be mistaken, Farve played badly last night and was as responsible as anyone on the Packers for their loss.

I would expect that Pittsburgh Steelers fans should be able to get excited about a football team with a young quarterback who throws to a wide receiver named Plaxico Burress that had to win three road games to advance to Super Bowl XLII, where they’ll have to face this decade’s version of evil incarnate, the New England Patriots. I know I’m excited.

And speaking of Seinfeld, the idea that Jessica Simpson distracted Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and was somehow responsible for the Cowboy’s early playoff exit is a lot of talk about nothing. Romo’s coach suggested the vacation, and teammate Terrell Owens paid for it, so quit trying to blame the blonde. I’m reasonably sure that if Romo hadn’t spent his week off cavorting in Mexico with a famous blonde, he would have spent it with a non-famous one anyway.

Ben Roethlisberger is entering into off-season contract negotiations and with his spectacular play this season, he’ll pretty much be able to name his price, although I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rooneys would prefer to have an average quarterback instead who wouldn’t effectively force them into writing a check for thirty-plus million dollars. But Big Ben will get his big payday, and as much as any quarterback in the NFL does, he deserves it. I don’t think that any quarterback has done more with less this year; he does have to throw to Cedrick Wilson, after all. What Ben won’t get, however, is a contract extension for Alan Faneca or the tall wide receiver he wants. The Steelers simply don’t do things that way, and this year won’t be any different. Even though signing Ben without giving him people to protect him and people to throw to is a bit like buying a new Ferrari and not getting insurance, the Rooney way has never involved spending any more than you need to in the off-season. The New England Patriots are also a team that never spent a lot in the off-season before this year. The results of their spending are both undeniable and spectacular, and although I would hope Pittsburgh notices, I would be very surprised by any change at all in the way things are done. If anything, the big contract that Ben will surely be signed to may serve to reduce off-season spending.

If you needed any proof that the Pittsburgh mainstream media wears black and gold colored glasses when covering the Steelers look no further that the coverage of Cedrick Wilson’s girlfriend flipping out and shooting at a wall in Wilson’s house. All the local coverage droned on about the situation ending peacefully and how something dire was averted, but the fact remained that she fired shots, they called in the SWAT team, and they evacuated over seventy neighbors. If I started shooting at the wall in my house and they called the SWAT team in, I’m reasonably sure the media coverage would not use the word ‘peaceful’ at all.

Tragically, Ernie “Fats” Holmes, defensive lineman, member of the Steel Curtain, and two-time Super Bowl champion died in a car crash this week. Shortly after he died, I spoke to someone who knew him during his time in with the Steelers. He said that Holmes was ‘a crazy animal’, and told me several entertaining stories, none of which are probably appropriate to print here. And Holmes certainly didn’t live a trouble-free life. But he was a complex individual, and seemed to inspire great loyalty in the other members of the Steel Curtain. After football, he became an ordained minister and seemed to settle down. Dwight White may have said it best when he said, “You know, it’s all about where you end up, and Ernie blossomed into an individual that I respected, admired and will miss.”

Okay, I know it’s a little bit late, but I came across Santa Clause’s naughty and nice list for all of the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowlers, and I’m reprinting it, even though I might end up on the naughty list for doing so.

Ben Roethlisberger – Nice

With one last regular season game to go, he’s already beaten Terry Bradshaw’s previous record for the most Steelers touchdowns in one season, and his quarterback passer rating (104.1) is second only to Tom Brady. And if you need any more evidence, just watch the games. Ben has lifted Pittsburgh up on his back and dragged them to a win more than a couple times this season, and without him at quarterback, I can’t imagine this team in the playoffs. For that matter, I don’t think the Steelers will get very deep in the playoffs this year, but if they do, it will be on Ben Roethlisberger’s back. Incidentally, some national writers were saying that Derek Anderson of the Cleveland Browns should have gotten the pick instead of Ben, but after Anderson threw four interceptions on Sunday, I haven’t seen any more talk about that.

What to get him – A new center to protect him and allow him to do his job better-that Sean Mahan is definitely naughty.

Willie Parker – Nice

Fast Willie was leading the NFL in rushing yards prior to his season-ending injury, and when you’re the number one running back, you should go to the Pro Bowl. By the way, as unfortunate as his injury is, it does allow Fred Taylor to go to the Pro Bowl, and the voters were definitely naughty for leaving out Taylor, particularly since his team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, is playoff bound. Can you go to the playoffs without a single Pro Bowl caliber player? Santa says no, but the Pro Bowl voters said yes.

What to get him – A Power running back to take some of the pressure off of him next year, as well as a speedy recovery.

James Harrison – Nice

James Harrison went to the Pro Bowl largely on the strength of his performance in the Monday night game against the inept Baltimore Ravens. But don’t be mistaken, it was a great performance, with Harrison racking up nine tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, one interception, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Harrison’s play the rest of the season has been solid, but not spectacular. But the people vote on who goes to the Pro Bowl, so sometimes one spectacular performance in a single nationally televised game is enough to sway the voters. Santa says what the heck, there’s no one else out there who seems like they were head and shoulders above Harrison, so call him nice.

What to get him – A couple more games as good as the one he played against Baltimore, so he really deserves the Pro Bowl spot next year.

Alan Faneca – Naughty

The offensive line has been terrible this year, and despite Faneca’s veteran status and belief that the Steelers owe him a big payday, he’s played as badly as anyone else on the line. The Steelers have allowed 47 sacks this year so far, one more than in 2006. The line seems to be getting worse as the season goes on, allowing four or more sacks in four of the last six games. No one associated with the offensive line this year has been anything but naughty.

What to get him anyway – A contract with another team like he desires. He was a distraction before the season, and he hasn’t played well anyway; it’s probably best for all involved for him to go.

Troy Polamalu – Incomplete

Troy hasn’t played much this year, and when he has played, he’s played hurt, and even early in the season when he wasn’t obviously hurt, he wasn’t playing well. He plays such a reckless, physical style of football that I’m not sure he’ll ever have a year where he’s not plagued by injuries. He goes to the Pro Bowl solely on reputation this year.

What to get him anyway – A speedy recovery and some adjustments in his style of play that allow him to continue to make big plays with less risk.

By the way, even though Santa sees everything, I’ve been kind of busy lately so I could be wrong on this one, but I heard that the Steelers approached Corey Dillon about signing on to replace Willie Parker, but Dillon wasn’t interested.

I hope you all had a great Christmas, or whatever other winter holiday you choose to celebrate.

Sincerely,
