We are now less than two weeks away from the start of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 Training Camp, and for the first time since Head Coach Mike Tomlin took over the reigns from former coach William Laird Cowher, fans and players alike will be learning to deal with wholesale changes to the team.

The Steelers enter 2012 with a new Offensive Coordinator in Todd Haley, who brings with him a radically different offensive scheme than we have seen in Pittsburgh. Many new faces will be moving into the dorms at St. Vincent College, including a slew of highly-rated draft picks. The team will be entering their first season without longtime veteran leaders Hines Ward, Aaron Smith, Chris Hoke, and James Farrior. The Steelers are also dealing with a volatile contract situation with WR Mike Wallace, an issue that may prove to loom large as the season grows closer.

The media-fueled controversy between QB Ben Roethlisberger and Haley has died down. It seems that despite learning a new system for the first time in his career, Roethlisberger is more focused than ever on bringing home another Lombardi trophy to the Steel City. The running back position will be interesting to watch, as starter Rashard Mendenhall will be shelved for an indefinite amount of time while finishing his recovery from a torn ACL sustained in the regular season finale last winter. The man on deck to inherit the starter load of carries is former undrafted free agent Isaac Redman, who parlayed a start in the AFC Wild Card game versus Denver into a 121-yard performance. He will be sharing duties with Jonathan Dwyer, John Clay, Baron Batch, and rookie speedster Chris Rainey.

We have many questions to answer before the Steelers kick off the regular season in Denver on September 9th. The Steelers will be riding right into the fire this season, becoming the first opponent for future Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning in Broncos jersey. In addition to that, the team will be returning to the site of one of their most disappointing postseason losses in recent history AND doing all of this on the prime time stage. Between now and September 9, our staff will be following the Steelers with wall to wall coverage of Camp Tomlin 2012, the preseason, and many articles predicting and analyzing every tidbit of information on the 2012 Pittsburgh Steelers.

Our “Latrobe Lowdown” series will include:

- Daily recaps of the happenings in Latrobe.

- A live report from Steelers Training Camp on the weekend of August 4-5.

- Breakdowns of each position, with a look at every player in camp and where they stack up as camp begins.

- A detailed look at the 2012 Steelers schedule, including predictions and analysis on each game.

- A look at the fantasy football value of the Steelers offensive players.

Be sure to read Nice Pick Cowher every day between now and the start of Training Camp on August 25 to get the best insight and analysis on what should prove to be a very exciting Steelers season.

What is going on here?

Three days into their 2008 training camp and yet more misery has struck the Pittsburgh Steelers. This time the unfortunate victim was punter Daniel Sepulveda, who was lost for the season with a torn ACL.

This calamity is strange for a number of reasons, the most obvious being the fact it was a real football injury even though it happened to a punter. This brings me to the second strange circumstance. I don’t care much about punters, except when they screw up, but I’m pretty sure the only time I’ve seen them injured is when a kick is blocked or they make an ill-advised attempt to actually play football. However, Sepulveda’s injury evidently went something like this: He came to camp. He said his knee was a little sore. They took an MRI for the heck of it. They found a torn ACL. Yes, he evidently ripped up his knee by standing on the sidelines carrying a clipboard.

Sepulveda is now claiming his knee hasn’t felt right since he had surgery for a torn ACL while playing for Baylor back in 2006. I’m not a doctor but it looked pretty good in the clip posted above. Actually, I give kickers shit about being sissy boys because, well, they are but as you saw in that video, Sepulveda was actually a pretty kick-ass punter. Then again, considering he’s almost the same exact size as Jack Lambert was during his heyday with the Steel Curtain, he should be required to deliver a hit or two purely out of principle.

Anyway, punting help is on the way in the form of Paul Ernster, picked up off waivers from the Detroit Lions. Those last two words should give you all the clues you need as to his level of ability. Or you may remember Ernster as I do, from his one and only appearance with the Browns in last year’s season opener against the Steelers. His soaring punts of 15 and 22 yards on a perfectly calm day earned him a ticket out of town faster than you could say “Charlie Frye.”

For those keeping score, so far our wild-haired All-Pro safety has a banged up leg, our run-stuffing All-Pro nose tackle is a fatass, and now our 4th round draft pick punter is gone for the season and replaced by somebody not good enough for either the Cleveland Browns or Detroit Lions. Yep, training camp can’t end soon enough.

(Image courtesy of One From The Other Thumb)

Today, at approximately four o’clock in the afternoon, football season officially begins in western Pennsylvania. No longer will Pittsburgh have to suffer through yet another season of pitiful baseball, lousy management, and idiotic trades by our inept Pirates. Tucked safely along the rolling hills of Westmoreland County, the Pittsburgh Steelers will convene their 42nd training camp as the eyes of the Burgh’s true sports fans turn to their one true major league franchise. Until the Penguins drop the puck in Sweden at least.

Sure, the preseason is more or less a sham. A cheap ploy designed to give greedy owners four more games with which to line their pockets. And yes, the first real meaningful game won’t take place for more than a month. But that doesn’t matter to the members of Steeler Nation. We take our football seriously.

How serious, you may ask? Seriously enough that not dozens, not hundreds, but thousands of people will make a pilgrimage to Latrobe in order to stand around in 90 degree heat and watch sweaty behemoths do sit-ups. The preseason is usually a long-winded way of deciding who is going to be a team’s 5th receiver or what undrafted rookie will make it as a special teamer. The crazy thing about Steeler fans is we actually care about such things.

This will be Mike Tomlin’s second training camp as head coach. Let’s hope his decision making process has improved this year as he made several choices last year which turned out badly as the year played out. He decided that FB Carey Davis would supplant Dan Kreider, long considered one of the best blocking fullbacks in the league. His reasoning was Davis was more athletic and could catch the ball out of the backfield, which is great except Davis went on to catch a whopping total of 12 passes. Tomlin also claimed that good special teams would be one of his priorities and he’d work tirelessly to make sure we were solid in that area, even going so far as trading a draft pick for KR Allen “Fair Catch” Rossum. This resulted in the Steelers having one of the worst special teams units in the NFL.

The major undercurrent to this season is, of course, the very real possibility it will be the last under the ownership of the Rooney family. The Post-Gazette recently published an embarrassing article agreeing with Tomlin’s statement that the ownership situation might be “a distraction” to the players. Are they serious? That is the most laughable bit of excuse making I’ve ever heard. We all know the Pittsburgh media is in bed with the Steelers but at least try to be reasonable. If Big Ben launches a bomb down the sideline to a streaking Santonio Holmes, I very much doubt the ball will slip through his arms because he’s worried about who’ll sign his checks next year. I don’t think Mike Tomlin’s ability to analyze game tape on Tuesday morning will suffer because he’s depressed over strife in the Rooney family.

A few other notes of interest:

–Diane Battiste Zinkham passed away at the age of 62. She was a major part of our cheerleading team, the Steelerettes, from 1961-70. Take note, Cowboy fans, the Steelers and the Cleveland Browns were the first two NFL teams with cheerleading squads. Which I guess means we were the first NFL team with attractive cheerleaders.

–Bret “Look at me! Look at me!” Favre is threatening to report to Green Bay Packers camp, whether they want him or not. He’s quickly turning into the Bill Murray character from the movie “What About Bob?”

–Pittsburgh native Jason “Twinkle Toes” Taylor was traded to the Washington Redskins.

–Top draft picks Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed are signed, sealed and delivered. Sweed has a four year deal for some undisclosed amount. Mendenhall is inked for five years/$12.55 million. He’ll likely use some of that money to replace the cell phone and Rolex that got jacked when he was mugged up in Chicago.

–Finally, also on the sad news front, Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch lost his battle with cancer at the age of 47. This doesn’t have much to do with football, although one of his final wishes was granted when the Steelers invited him to participate in training camp last year. I am a CMU graduate and although I didn’t have any classes with Professor Pausch, I recall reading about him and his accomplishments while there. That he inspired so many people during his remaining years is something nobody should ever forget.
