That’s right readers, it’s “Mock Draft Time” here at N.P.C.! With The N.F.L. Scouting Combine ready to begin tomorrow, I thought that it would be a great time for me to unveil an updated version of my 2013 N.F.L. Mock Draft. Just for prefacing purposes, today’s Mock will be a Rounds 1 & 2 edition with zero trades.

Don’t worry everybody, I’ll add trades and move prospects up and down the draft board once The Scouting Combine, Pro Days, and Free Agency periods begin. But for now, let’s get started on this fourth installment:

Round 1

1. Kansas City Chiefs: Geno Smith QB (West Virginia)

This pick will gain much more clarity once we see what the Chiefs do during the Free Agency period. If Left Tackle Branden Albert leaves as a UFA, and the Chiefs trade for/sign a Quarterback (Nick Foles), then Luke Joeckel will be an obvious choice at #1 overall. If Kansas City is unable to trade for a Quarterback, and do hold onto Albert long-term, new Head Coach Andy Reid could try to work his QB magic with Geno Smith. The accurate former Mountaineer (2012: 369 for 518 (71.2%), 4,205 Yards, 42 TD’s, and 6 INT’s) would be a solid fit as the Chiefs begin the long process of rebuilding.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Bjoern Werner DE (Florida State)

Although the Jason Babin signing helped, Jacksonville would be wise to bolster their pass-rush early in this year’s Draft. The Jaguars ranked last in the League with a total of 20.0 Sacks last year, and had their fair share of issues putting consistent pressure on opposing Quarterbacks. Jacksonville’s pass-rush was so anemic that Defensive Tackle Tyson Alualu led the team with a measly 3.5 Sacks. Although the German-born Werner (6’4″ 256 lbs.) is relatively new to the game football, he continued to improve his pass-rushing skills as he logged 18.0 Tackles For Loss (TFL’s) and 13.0 Sacks from his Defensive End position.

3. Oakland Raiders: Star Lotulelei DT (Utah)

Without Al Davis running things, General Manager Reggie McKenzie will be able to upgrade the interior of Oakland’s Defensive Line with the best Defensive Tackle in this year’s class. Tommy Kelly has proved to be an absolute disaster since he signed his 7-year $50.125 million dollar contract, and the Raiders could also lose Desmond Bryant to Free Agency this offseason as well. Despite being double-teamed and keyed on for much of the season, Lotulelei was a 1st Team All-Pac-12 performer in 2012 as he amassed 42 Tackles, 5.0 Sacks, 11.0 TFL’s, Forced 3 Fumbles, and Recovered 4. McKenzie used a Top 10 selection on B.J. Raji when he was in Green Bay, and if Lotulelei falls to Oakland, I could see him going in that direction once again this April.

4. Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Joeckel OT (Texas A&M)

The Eagles’ Offensive Line was an injury-plagued “dumpster fire” last year, and help is needed at multiple positions including Left and Right Tackle. Demetress Bell and King Dunlap played horribly, and Jason Peters suffered another season-ending injury. Joeckel falling would be a dream scenario for the Eagles, and the team would definitely benefit from the addition of the Aggies’ blind-side protector over the last three years (39 Games, 39 Starts). The 6’6″ 310 lb. Joeckel was the 2012 Outland Award winner, a 2012 consensus All-American, and a solid fit in an Offensive system which values athleticism from the Offensive Linemen.

5. Detroit Lions: DeMarcus Milliner CB (Alabama)

Detroit’s Defense is in need of some play-makers at the Cornerback position. If the Lions, who had the 4th fewest Interceptions in 2012 are not interested in any of the pass-rushers who fall to them in Round 1, DeMarcus Milliner would be an appropriate and heady choice. The 6’1 198 lb. Milliner had a terrific 2012 season with the Crimson Tide as he put up an incredible 22 Passes Defended over the team’s 14 games, and added 54 Tackles and 2 Interceptions to his statline as well. Milliner fits well in man and zone schemes, and should be a solid N.F.L. Cornerback.

6. Cleveland Browns: Ezekiel Ansah DE/OLB (Brigham Young)

New Defensive Coordinator Ray Horton will probably want to improve the Browns’ pass-rush as the team transitions to a 3-4 scheme. Luckily for Horton, he will likely get to choose from Ezekiel Ansah, Barkevious Mingo, and Jarvis Jones once Cleveland is on the clock. Jabaal Sheard (7.0 Sacks) and Juqua Parker (6.0) could use some help attacking the passer, and the Browns need a more formidable pass-rush when they face Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, and Ginger Spice six times per season. Although he is newer to the game of football, Ansah had a fine 2012 season as he made 62 Tackles, 13.0 TFL’s, 4.5 Sacks during his first year as a starter.

7. Arizona Cardinals: Mike Glennon QB (North Carolina State)

If the Cardinals do not elect to take Eric Fisher at #7, or he does not fall to them there, then I can see the franchise going in the direction of a Quarterback with their 1st Round selection. Because the Quarterback cupboard is basically bare for new Head Coach Bruce Arians, Arizona could take a chance on the massive Mike Glennon (6’7″ 220 lbs.). The tall yet surprisingly athletic North Carolina State prospect did a fine job during his two years as a starter (4,031 Yards Passing and 31 TD’s in 2012) after he took over for Russell Wilson in 2011. Although Glennon’s Completion Percentage from last season (58.4%) might be a cause for concern, Glennon’s rifle-arm is sure to drive him up draft boards around the League.

8. Buffalo Bills: Damontre Moore DE (Texas A&M)

If both Glennon and Smith are gone by the 8th overall pick, the Bills might be enticed to bolster their ailing Defense early, then either trade up to grab a signal-caller or wait until Day 2. Buffalo could select Kenny Vaccaro at #8 if Jairus Byrd leaves, but it wouldn’t hurt the Bills to amp up their pass-rush (2012: 36.0 Sacks ranked 18th) if a player like Damontre Moore falls to them. At 6’4″ 250 lbs., Moore led the Aggies last year in Tackles (85), TFL’s 21.0, Sacks (12.5), and even blocked 2 Kicks as he emerged as one of the S.E.C.’s best pass-rushers.

9. New York Jets: Jarvis Jones OLB (Georgia)

2013 could be Rex Ryan’s “Last Stand” in New York, and I believe that if Jarvis Jones falls to him and the pass-rushing-needy Jets, he will be more than willing to take a chance on the former Georgia Bulldog whose “spinal stenosis” could scare teams away early. 2012 1st Round pick Quinton Coples (5.5 Sacks) and 2011 1st Round pick Muhammad Wilkerson (5.0 Sacks) were very productive last season as they supplied heat from their 5-Technique Defensive End spots, positions I might add which are not supposed to generate many Sacks. Thus, the Jets might benefit from a player like Jones (6’4″ 242 lbs.) who racked up 24.5 TFL’s and 14.5 Sacks during his Senior season.

10. Tennessee Titans: Shariff Floyd DT (Florida)

Sen’Derrick Marks is an impending UFA and Tennessee could stand to use another stout Defensive Tackle to add to the mix with Jurrell Casey and Mike Martin if Marks indeed leaves. Floyd (6’3″ 303 lbs.) played both Defensive End and Defensive Tackle at Florida, although he probably played his best football last season on the interior as he displayed a surprising combination of agility, power, and quickness for a man his size. Overall, Floyd notched 46 Tackles, 3.0 Sacks, and a team-leading 13.0 TFL’s during his Junior season, and could garner interest from teams who employ 3-4 and 4-3 Defensive schemes this offseason.

11. San Diego Chargers: Eric Fisher OT (Central Michigan)

San Diego gave up 49.0 Sacks last year (4th most in the League), and could definitely use as many talented Offensive Linemen as they can get as Rivers enters his 10th season in the N.F.L.. The 6’7″ 305 lbs. Fisher was a 1st Team All-MAC performer last year, and also possesses some versatility to his game. Although he played most of his collegiate career at Left Tackle, he did start games earlier during his time with the Chippewas at Right Tackle and Right Guard, so the Chargers could find another place for him if the blind-side is not a great fit. If Fisher falls to San Diego at #11, I cannot see them selecting any other player.

12. Miami Dolphins: Cordarrelle Patterson WR (Tennessee)

Do not get me wrong, Davonne Bess is a fine slot Wide Receiver, and Brian Hartline is a solid #2 target. But if the Dolphins are serous about taking Ryan Tannehill’s game to the next level, they could stand to draft their franchise Quarterback an explosive and play-making #1 pass-catcher. The 6’3″ 205 lb. Junior was a phenomenal Kick Returner and Wide Receiver at the Junior College level before he came to Knoxville this past year, and boy did he make a splash in 2012. Over 11 Games, Patterson caught 42 passes for 690 Yards and 4 TD’s, he rushed for 270 Yards and 3 TD’s, and returned 1 Kickoff and 1 Punt for TD’s. Although his skill-set is still very raw, Patterson just makes plays when he has the football in his hands, and teams must respect his speed.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Kenny Vaccaro FS (Texas)

If the Buccaneers look to draft another Safety early, they might be wise to target the talented Kenny Vaccaro (6’1″ 218 lbs.) to begin the rebuilding process in their Secondary. Vaccaro was the Longhorns’ leading Tackler last year (104) and added 4.0 TFL’s, 2 Forced Fumbles, and made 2 INT’s last year. A two-and-a-half year starter at Texas (31 Starts, 50 Games), the physical Vaccaro played both Free and Strong Safety during his collegiate career, and can help out with coverage in the slot too. Pairing Vaccaro with Mark Barron would give the Buccaneers two of the game’s best young Safeties.

14. Carolina Panthers: Sheldon Richardson DT (Missouri)

Although the Panther’s Defense improved this past year, issues still exist along the interior of their Defensive Line. Carolina’s Run Defense could be helped by an impact player like 3-Technique prospect Sheldon Richardson from Missouri. After two years at the Junior College level, and one year in a non-starter role with the Tigers, Richardson (6’3″ 295 lbs.) burst on the scene in 2012 when he racked up 75 Tackles, 10.5 TFL’s, and 4.0 Sacks over Missouri’s 11 Games. Drafting a player like Richardson would be a solid move for Carolina as Dwan Edwards will be a UFA after the 2013 season, while Sione Fua and Frank Kearse could be pushed for playing time as well.

15. New Orleans Saints: Barkevious Mingo OLB (Louisiana State)

The Saints will be employing a 3-4 Defense this year, and the biggest task for them to accomplish this offseason will be acquiring players who can fit the system. New Orleans’ Defense tied for 25th in the League in Sacks last year with 30.0, and they might target a pass-rusher with their 1st Round pick. Barkevious Mingo (6’4″240 lbs) could be just the player that the Saints need to make the 3-4 transition, and could develop into one of the most electrifying pass-rushers in the League three years from now. Although his stats last season were not “eye-popping,” 4.5 Sacks, 8.5 TFL’s, Mingo has the athletic ability to turn into a terror off of the edge.

16. St. Louis Rams: Lane Johnson OT (Oklahoma)

Lane Johnson of Oklahoma could be the Left Tackle prospect the Rams are looking for to protect Bradford’s blind-side. Johnson’s selection would allow the Rams’ current Left Tackle, Roger Saffold, to take the place of soon-to-be UFA Right Tackle Barry Richardson, or kick in to Left Guard to replace the soon-to-be UFA Robert Turner. The former Sooner (6’6″ 303 lbs.) is an intriguing prospect who played Quarterback in High School and at Junior College, and spent time at Tight End and Defensive End in Norman as well. For the last two years though Johnson has manned both the Right (12 Starts) and Left (11 Starts) Tackle spots, and has the potential to be a fantastic pass-protector down the road.

In addition, I must add that the teams currently not eliminated from Super Bowl contention will be slotted according to my own projections of how I believe the 2012-2013 postseason will all unfold. Don’t worry everybody, I’ll add trades and move prospects up and down the draft board once The Scouting Combine, Pro Days, and Free Agency get underway. But for now, let’s get started on this second installment:

1. Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Joeckel OT (Texas A&M)

Could the Chiefs use a Quarterback right now? Of course they could, but sadly for them, the 2013 Draft Class does not seem to be as full of top-tier “franchise Quarterbacks” as last year’s. If Kansas City does not elect to trade down or select a Quarterback, they could definitely use an upgrade along their Offensive Line next year. Not only did the Chiefs’ O-Line surrender 40.0 Sacks during the 2012 campaign, their Left Tackle Branden Albert will be an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) this March. Kansas City would be wise to address their QB-needs through Free Agency or later Rounds in the Draft while they shore up their Left Tackle spot with the Aggies’ blind-side protector throughout his three-year stint in College Station (39 Games, 39 Starts). The 6’6″ 310 lb. Joeckel was the 2012 Outland Award winner, a 2012 consensus All-American, and could be just the player the Chiefs need to begin their rebuilding process under Andy Reid and his pass-heavy Offense.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Geno Smith QB (West Virginia)

The Jaguars have a new G.M. and a new Head Coach in town, and both have zero allegiance to the top two signal-callers already on the roster: Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne. If Dave Caldwell and Gus Bradley believe that Gabbert and Henne are not the long-term answers at the Quarterback position, I could definitely see Jacksonville selecting West Virginia’s Geno Smith with the 2nd overall pick. The accurate and athletic Smith (369 for 518 (71.2%), 4,205 Yards, 42 TD’s, and 6 INT’s) would give the Jaguars an immediate upgrade at a position of need, and hope for the future of their Offense.

3. Oakland Raiders: Jarvis Jones OLB (Georgia)

The Raiders’ Defense is in need of some serious reconstruction, and this year’s Draft will be key. Oakland needs depth and future starters at almost every position, but they could really use an upgrade at Strongside Linebacker and along their Defensive Line. Their pass rush was anemic last year (T-31st last year with only 25.0 Sacks), and they should look to add some players to help in that department on Days 1, 2, and 3. Oakland might benefit from a player like Jones who racked up 24.5 TFL’s and 14.5 Sacks during his Senior season. At 6’4″ 242 lbs., Jones reminds me a bit of Von Miller in terms of his ability to pass-rush, and pass-rush well, from different spots on the field.

4. Philadelphia Eagles: Star Lotulelei DT (Utah)

With Michael Vick likely to stay in Philadelphia and zero Offensive Linemen left on the board in this Mock, I can see the Eagles addressing the Defensive Tackle position yet again in Round 1 of this Draft. If Philadelphia can line up Fletcher Cox and Lotulelei on the interior of their Defensive Line, they have the potential to absolutely dominate future opponents in the trenches. Despite being double-teamed and keyed on for much of the season, Lotulelei was a 1st Team All-Pac-12 performer in 2012 when he amassed 42 Tackles, 5.0 Sacks, 11.0 TFL’s, Forced 3 Fumbles, and Recovered 4.

5. Detroit Lions: Bjoern Werner DE (Florida State)

Detroit will likely need some serious help at Defensive End if they fail to do anything in Free Agency. Kyle Vanden Bosch will be 35 next season, while Cliff Avril will likely be a high-priced UFA and playing elsewhere in 2013. I can see either Damontre Moore or Bjoern Werner as the Lions’ 1st Round selection, and the team would be wise to select Werner if he fell to #5. Although the German-born Werner is relatively new to football, he continued to improve this past year as he put up 18.0 TFL’s and 13.0 Sacks with the Seminoles. Werner’s speed and strength could force teams to single Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley on the interior and create matchups-galore for the Lions as they try to come back after a disappointing 2012 season.

6. Cleveland Browns: Damontre Moore DE (Texas A&M)

Jabaal Sheard (7.0 Sacks) and Juqua Parker (6.0) could use some help attacking the passer, and the Browns could definitely use a more formidable pass-rush when they face Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, and Ginger Spice 6 times per season. With Ray Horton in town, the Browns will look to improve their blitz, and a player like Damontre Moore could be just what Cleveland’s Defense needs to ramp up the pressure. At 6’4″ 250 lbs., Moore led the Aggies last year in Tackles (85), Tackles for Loss (TFL’s) 21.0, Sacks (12.5), and even blocked 2 Kicks, and I believe that he possesses enough athleticism to become a larger stand-up Outside Linebacker like LaMarr Woodley used to be before he got fat.

7. Arizona Cardinals: Mike Glennon QB (North Carolina State)

If a player like Joeckel slides to Arizona at #7, or they are confident in reaching for an Eric Fisher, then I can see the franchise going in said direction. But because Bruce Arians is in town, I can see Arizona selecting a Quarterback in Round 1 like Mike Glennon from North Carolina State. I liken Glennon’s skill-set to a combination between Joe Flacco and Nick Foles. And with his bigger yet athletic frame, Arians could see a bit of “Big Ben” in the North Carolina State prospect (4,031 Yards Passing and 31 TD’s in 2012) as well. Although Glennon’s Completion Percentage from last season (58.4%) might be a cause for concern, his rifle arm, and surprising athleticism could drive him up draft boards around the League.

8. Buffalo Bills: Matt Barkley QB (Southern California)

With Manti Te’o’s recent “99 Problems and the Girl being Non-Existent,” I am not sure who to project to the Bills right now in Round 1. What I do know is that Ryan Fitzpatrick has been inconsistent at best since he signed that $50 million dollar deal in the middle of the 2011 campaign. Doug Marrone could elect to wait until Round 2 to fill his need for a Quarterback with his own collegiate signal-caller Ryan Nassib, or he could fill the need in Round 1 with a player like Matt Barkley from U.S.C.. I believe that Matt Barkley’s stock will rise once he comes back from his shoulder surgery and teams begin to look at more film of him and his successful collegiate career as a whole (246 for 387, 3,273 Yards, 63.6%, 36 TD’s & 15 INT’s was a “down year” in 2012). Although Barkley might not be considered the most athletic Quarterback, he ran a Pro-Style system at Southern Cal, he possesses a strong arm and can make every throw on the field, and can do so in an accurate fashion.

9. New York Jets: Barkevious Mingo DE/OLB (Louisiana State)

First of all, let me say that 2012 1st Round pick Quinton Coples (5.5 Sacks) and 2011 1st Round pick Muhammad Wilkerson (5.0 Sacks) did a fine job last season as they supplied heat from their 5-Technique Defensive End spots, positions I might add which are not supposed to generate many Sacks. Unfortunately, the Jets lack speed outside of Coples and Wilkerson, and could use an upgrade over veteran Calvin Pace at Outside Linebacker. The athletic Barkevious Mingo (6’4″240 lbs) could be just the player the Jets enlist to provide some extra speed and heat off of the edge. Although he was slowed a bit last season (4.5 Sacks, 8.5 TFL’s), Mingo could instantly upgrade one of New York’s Outside Linebacker spots.

10. Tennessee Titans: DeMarcus Milliner CB (Alabama)

Cortland Finnegan left for St. Louis last season, Ryan Mouton will be a UFA this offseason, and Alterraun Verner is set to reach UFA status in the Spring of 2014. While it might be a bit early, the Titans could decide to bolster their Secondary by selecting the most talented “Shut-Down” Corner in this year’s draft class. The 6’1 198 lb. Milliner had a terrific 2012 season with the Crimson Tide as he put up an incredible 22 Passes Defended over the team’s 14 games, and added 54 Tackles and 2 INT’s to his statline as well. The addition of Milliner would give the Titans’ beleaguered Secondary (31 Pass TD’s allowed tied for 2nd last in 2012) a tremendous insurance policy at Cornerback. Plus it can never hurt a Defense to have too many Cornerbacks on their roster, especially those who can excel in Man-Coverage.

11. San Diego Chargers: Eric Fisher OT (Central Michigan)

Philip Rivers was bludgeoned last season with Jared Gaither manning the Left Tackle spot and an assortment of backups doing their best to stop opposing pass-rushers. Although he played most of his collegiate career at Left Tackle, he did start games earlier during his time with the Chippewas at Right Tackle and Right Guard. So even if the Left Tackle spot is not in Fisher’s future, he could fill in at either of those two other positions. And for an O-Line desperate team like the Chargers, his presence at Right Tackle or Right Guard would be an upgrade nonetheless.

12. Miami Dolphins: Keenan Allen WR (California)

Do not get me wrong, Davonne Bess is a fine slot Wide Receiver, and Brian Hartline is a solid #2 target. But if the Dolphins are serous about taking Ryan Tannehill’s game to the next level, they could stand to draft their franchise Quarterback a legitimate play-making #1 pass-catcher like Keenan Allen (6’3″ 215 lbs.) from California. The Dolphins ranked 22nd in the League last year with a 6.8 Yards per Pass Attempt Average and only 30th in Total Pass Touchdowns with 13, thus they could use an upgrade at the Wide Receiver position. Allen had a terrific career with the Golden Bears (totaled 1,343 Yards Receiving during 2011 and 737 during 9 games last year) and possesses a size-speed skill-set which would make him a solid fit in the League.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Johnathan Hankins DT (Ohio State)

Tampa Bay must fill needs at multiple spots on Defense, and if they elect not to take a Cornerback in Round 1, I could definitely see them taking the best Defensive Tackle available with the 13th overall pick. A wide-bodied, yet athletic gap-clogger, Hankins (6’3″ 320 lbs.) shined during his Junior season with the Buckeyes as he logged 55 Tackles, 4.0 TFL’s, 1.0 Sack, and earned All-Big-10 honors. The addition of Hankins could allow him and Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy to develop into a pair of formidable Defensive Tackles for the Buccaneers.

14. Carolina Panthers: Sheldon Richardson DT (Missouri)

Although the Panther’s Defense improved this past year, they could still use some upgrades along the interior of their Defensive Line. Carolina’s Run Defense could be helped by an impact player like the athletic and potential 3-Technique prospect Sheldon Richardson from Missouri. After two years at the Junior College level and a year in a non-starter role with the Tigers, Richardson (6’3″ 295 lbs.) burst on the scene in 2012 when he racked up 75 Tackles, 10.5 TFL’s, and 4.0 Sacks over Missouri’s 11 Games. Drafting a player like Richardson would be a solid move for Carolina as Dwan Edwards will be a UFA after the 2013 season, while Sione Fua and Frank Kearse could be pushed for playing time as well.

15. New Orleans Saints: Ezekiel Ansah DE (Brigham Young)

Overall, the Saints’ Run Defense was downright terrible last season. New Orleans ranked last in Yards Per Carry Allowed (5.2), Total Rushing Yards Allowed (2,361), and Total Rushing Yards Per Gamed (147.6). The Saints will also need help rushing the passer (T-25th last season 30.0 Sacks) and an athletic player to help rotate in with Cameron Jordan and Will Smith. The raw yet talented Defensive End/Outside Linebacker prospect Ezekiel Ansah out of Brigham Young could be an option for the Saints at #15. Although he is newer to the game of football, Ansah had a fine 2012 season as he made 62 Tackles, 13.0 TFL’s, 4.5 Sacks during his first year as a starter, and is projected by some to be a “Jason Pierre-Paul” type of “high-risk, high-reward” prospect.

16. St. Louis Rams: Cordarrelle Patterson WR (Tennessee)

The Rams have the luxury of possessing two 1st Round picks, and could be willing to go B.P.A. with one, and fill an enormous need with the other. With the 16th overall selection, St. Louis could look to add a weapon for Sam Bradford to help in the passing game, especially if Eric Fisher is off of the board when they go on the clock first. Patterson was a phenomenal Kick Returner and Wide Receiver at the Junior College level before he came to Knoxville this past year, and boy did he make a splash in 2012. Over 11 Games, Patterson caught 42 passes for 690 Yards and 4 TD’s, he rushed for 270 Yards and 3 TD’s, and returned 1 Kickoff and 1 Punt for Touchdowns. The Junior possesses not only incredible speed but a large frame (6’3″ 205 lbs.) to boot, and could be just the #1 option Sam Bradford is in need of at this point in his career.

That’s right readers, it’s “Mock Draft Time” here at N.P.C.. Just like last year, I will be coming out with N.F.L. Mock Drafts over the next three and a half months to keep all of us fans updated and keyed in during this extremely crucial offseason. Just for prefacing purposes, today’s Mock will be a 1st Round edition with zero trades. In addition, I must add that the teams currently not eliminated from Super Bowl contention will be slotted according to my own projections of how I believe the 2012-2013 postseason will all unfold. Don’t worry everybody, I’ll add trades and move prospects up and down the draft board once The Scouting Combine, Pro Days, and Free Agency begin. But for now, let’s get started on this first installment:

2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Damontre Moore DE/OLB (Texas A&M)

Jacksonville’s pass-rush was so anemic that Defensive Tackle Tyson Alualu led the team with 3.5 Sacks. Moore (6’4″ 250 lbs.) led the Aggies last year in Tackles (85), Tackles for Loss (TFL’s) 21.0, Sacks (12.5), and even blocked 2 Kicks. Pairing a pass-rusher like Moore with Babin would give the Jaguars’ Defense at least some hope for the future.

4. Philadelphia Eagles: Jarvis Jones OLB (Georgia)

Philadelphia’s Quarterbacks were beaten mercilessly last year to the tune of 48.0 Sacks (5th most in the League) as injuries and poor play struck the team’s Offensive Line. King Dunlap and Demetress Bell illustrated that they are not starting-caliber Tackles, while Jason Peters missed yet another year due to an Achilles injury. Unfortunately for the Eagles, because Jake Matthews and Taylor Lewan both are returning to school, the franchise will likely be reaching for a Tackle if Luke Joeckel comes off the board before the #4 pick. Philadelphia should not fret however, because Jarvis Jones (6’2″ 242 lbs.) will likely be available when they are on the clock for their first pick. The Eagles’ could use an upgrade at Strongside Linebacker, and their Pass Rush (T-25th last year with only 30.0 Sacks) could use a player like Jones who racked up 24.5 TFL’s and 14.5 Sacks during his Senior season.

I can see either Damontre Moore or Bjoern Werner as the Lions’ 1st Round selection, and the team would be wise to select Werner if he fell this far down the board. Although the German-born Werner is relatively new to football, he continued to improve this past year as he put up 18.0 TFL’s and 13.0 Sacks with the Seminoles during his Junior campaign. Werner’s speed and strength could force teams to single Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley on the interior and create matchups-galore for the Lions.

6. Cleveland Browns: Dee Milliner CB (Alabama)

If neither Jarvis Jones, Damontre Moore, or Bjoern Werner fall to the Browns at #6, I could see them trying to bolster their Secondary in Round 1 with the selection of Alabama’s Dee Milliner. The 6’1 198 lb. Milliner had a terrific 2012 season with the Crimson Tide as he put up an incredible 22 Passes Defended over the team’s 14 games, and added 54 Tackles and 2 INT’s to his statline as well. Adding a physical and potential “Shut-Down” Corner like Milliner would give the Browns the best Starting Cornerback tandem in the A.F.C. North, and one of the top and up-and-coming duos in the entire League.

7. Arizona Cardinals: Geno Smith QB (West Virginia)

Whoever becomes the new Head Coach in Arizona, I hope that he understands that Kevin Kolb, John Skelton, and Ryan Lindley are not the “answers” at the Quarterback position and looks to select a signal-caller high in the 2013 Draft. Granted, the Cardinals’ Offensive Line gave up a League-high 58.0 Sacks last year, and if a player like Joeckel slides to them #7, or they are confident in reaching for an Eric Fisher, then I can see the franchise going in said direction. But because the Quarterback cupboard is basically bare, Arizona could take a chance on the accurate and athletic Smith (369 for 518 (71.2%), 4,205 Yards, 42 TD’s, and 6 INT’s) as they hope that whoever is added to their Offensive Line can improve and gel under the new Coaching regime.

8. Buffalo Bills: Manti Te’o ILB (Notre Dame)

Don’t be surprised if Marrone and the Bills pass on a signal-caller in Round 1 and elect to bolster their Defense while they go after his collegiate signal-caller Ryan Nassib in Round 2. Although Manti Te’o struggled, along with the rest of Notre Dame’s Defense, in the National Championship Game, the Linebacker nevertheless had an incredible career with the Irish. The Heisman Trophy runner-up was a “Tackling Machine” as he recorded over 100 Tackles during his final three years in South Bend, and improved on his pass coverage during the 2012 season as well (7 Interceptions). Te’o (6’2″ 255 lbs.) projects well in both 4-3 and 3-4 Defensive schemes, and could be a more than adequate replacement for Nick Barnett at Middle Linebacker.

10. Tennessee Titans: Johnathan Hankins DT (Ohio State)

If Dee Milliner does not fall to them, and the Titans are not intrigued to take Johnthan Banks or Xavier Rhodes, I can definitely see them adding more depth to the Defensive Tackle position. Sen’Derrick Marks is an impending UFA and Tennessee could stand to use another stout Defensive Tackle to add to the mix with Jurrell Casey and Mike Martin if Marks leaves. A wide-bodied, yet athletic gap-clogger, Hankins (6’3″ 320 lbs.) shined during his Junior season with the Buckeyes as he logged 55 Tackles, 4.0 TFL’s, 1.0 Sack, and earned All-Big-10 honors. Hankins’ presence could also allow the Titans’ Defensive Ends Derrick Morgan and Kamerion Wimbley to have some favorable matchups on the outside, especially during pass-rush situations.

11. San Diego Chargers: Eric Fisher OT (Central Michigan)

Philip Rivers was bludgeoned last season with Jared Gaither manning the Left Tackle spot and an assortment of backups doing their best to stop opposing pass-rushers.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Johnthan Banks CB (Mississippi State)

With Ronde Barber likely to retire soon, and Aqib Talib gone, the Buccaneers would be wise to add more depth and talented play-makers to the back end of their Defense. Johnthan Banks would be a nice fit with Tampa Bay as he possesses a big frame (6’1″ 185 lbs.), has shown the ability to make plays on the football (16 career INT’s), can mix it up in the run-game (125 Tackles the last two seasons), and even has the skill-set to play Free Safety. The 2012 Jim Thorpe Award winner could compete to start during his Rookie season, and at the very least he could challenge Leonard Johnson and E.J. Biggers for a starting job. Tampa Bay’s Pass Defense couldn’t get any worse as they allowed a League-worst 4,758 Yards through the air, ranked 31st in overall Yards per Pass Attempt allowed (7.9), ranked 29th in Passing Touchdowns allowed (30), and ranked 28th in Completion Percentage Against (65.4%).

15. New Orleans Saints: Dion Jordan DE (Oregon)

Dion Jordan, who put up 44 Tackles, 10.5 TFL’s, 5.0 Sacks, and Forced 3 Fumbles in 2012, has a unique frame (6’6″ 243 lbs.), and an athletic skill-set (surprisingly in pass-coverage) which could make him a player the Saints might target in the middle of Round 1 if he recovers well from his recent shoulder surgery.

16. St. Louis Rams: Chance Warmack OG (Alabama)

Sam Bradford possesses all of the tools to be a good starting Quarterback for the Rams. Unfortunately, Bradford has been protected by some porous Offensive Lines’ throughout his career and been Sacked a total of 105 times over his first three seasons (42 Games). If St. Louis wants Bradford to flourish, they would be wise to go Offensive Line early and often in this year’s Draft. Thankfully for them, they should have a chance to instantly upgrade their O-Line’s interior if they select Chance Warmack (6’2″ 322 lbs.) out of Alabama. Warmack started 40 games during his collegiate career with the Crimson Tide and is a fantastic road-grading mauler with some nice pass-protection skills to boot.

Every week from now until the N.F.L. Draft in late-April, Fansided.com’s writers will be coming out with new and updated versions of their own 2013 N.F.L. Mock Drafts. During this period, I will be writing up weekly break-downs and providing analysis of every projected Pittsburgh selection in the installments (last week’s is here). Each team-themed Fansided site will be participating in this activity, and I must say that this project has the potential to be a fun and interesting experience for all of you Draft-loving readers. But enough of me babbling, let’s get to my analysis of who Fansided’s Josh Hill believes will be taken by the Steelers (with pick #18 of 32 in the 1st Round) in his latest Mock Draft:

Alec Ogletree, Inside Linebacker, University of Georgia

The Steelers are going to look to upgrade at linebacker and Ogletree is one of the best in the class. Next to Manti Te’o he’s the best interior linebacker in the draft and boosted his stock by being the best player on the field in the SEC championship game. With Troy Polamalu injury prone and aging, don’t count out Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro or a quarterback here.

Because I discussed Ogletree at length so much last week, I will not delve into too much detail into why I believe selecting Ogletree (or Alabama’s C.J. Mosley) in Round 1 would be a terrific move by Colbert & Co.. If you would like the full version of why I consider Inside Linebacker to be a weakness the Steelers must address this offseason, just take a gander at my analysis from last week and my discussion of Draft prospects from The S.E.C. Championship Game from last week. What I will mention again this week however is that Ogletree has been a tremendously productive player for the Bulldogs during his career, and really burst on the scene during his 9-games this season (99 Tackles, 2.0 Sacks, 4 Passes Defended, 1 Interception).

The Junior Linebacker has the size (6’3″ 232. lbs.) and athleticism (he came to Georgia as a Safety prospect), to be a fantastic fit with the Steelers who will likely need an upgrade at the “Mack/Weakside” Inside Linebacker position over the coming years once Larry Foote moves on and Lawrence Timmons eventually shifts to the “Buck/Strongside” spot. With his Safety background, Ogletree should also be able to help out in pass coverage, an area in which Pittsburgh’s Linebackers have struggled with over the last few seasons.

Discussing Safety Prospects & Who Pittsburgh Could Target

Because I have already provided my thoughts on the prospects (or lacktherof) of the Steelers taking a Quarterback in Round 1 of April’s Draft, I thought that today would be a prime opportunity to discuss the other positional area Hill mentioned that Pittsburgh could look for in Round 1: Safety.

Elam has had a terrific career with the Gators. Mandatory Credit: Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

It is no big secret that the Steelers need help at Safety, both spots actually, and it is something I have mentioned almost ad nauseaum this year. Future Hall of Fame Strong Safety Troy Polamalu has missed 9 games with calf issues, will be entering his 10th season in 2013, and is having difficulty staying on the field at this point in his career. To his credit, Free Safety Ryan Clark has had a productive year so far and ranks 2nd on the team in Tackles (83) and Tied for 2nd in Interceptions (2). Unfortunately, Clark will not only turn 34 next season, but will also enter the final year of the 4 year contract he signed after the 2009 campaign.

As bleak as the Steelers starting situations appear to be post-2013, the backup situations are nothing to write home about either, and could even be described completely “non-existent” looking towards the future. Ryan Mundy has underachieved this season in his limited opportunities, and will be an Unrestricted Free Agent after this year. Will Allen, who like Clark has chipped in this year with some effective play in a spot starting role (31 Tackles, 1 FF), will also be an Unrestricted Free Agent after the season ends like Mundy. Behind Mundy and Allen, the only depth that currently exists is Rookie UDFA Robert Golden who has logged almost zero time outside of Special Teams and on the Defensive side of the ball this year.

Although Hill was spot on when he mentioned that Pittsburgh could go Safety in Round 1, I however see a better fit for the team than Kenny Vaccaro (who plays Free Safety) if the Steelers do decide to look for Troy’s replacement that early: Matt Elam of Florida.

Elam sort of fits the mold of what the Steelers would look for to fill their upcoming void at Strong Safety. Although he is considered to be a bit small (5’10″ 202 lbs.), Elam has been a physical and effective player against the run (78 Tackles in 2011, 65 already this season with 10.0 Tackles for Loss), against the pass (5 PBU’s in 2011, 5 already this season), and even rushing the passer (4.0 career Sacks) during his three year career with Florida. In addition to his versatile skill-set, Elam also has forced a fair amount of Takeaways as a Gator to boot. After spot-duty as a Freshman in which he made 22 Tackles, 1.0 Sack, and logged 1 Fumble Recovery, Elam recorded 2 Interceptions during his Sophomore season in 2011. This year, Elam has already picked off 4 passes for Florida and forced a huge fumble to knock off then-undefeated Louisiana State (10:20ish mark).

Swearinger proved to be a solid player for the Gamecocks during his career.
If the Steelers do select a Safety like Elam early, it would not shock me if they tried to double-dip at the position later in the draft and try to find a down-the-road replacement for Ryan Clark at Free Safety. While I do like Vaccaro, multiple talented and productive players like Bacarri Rambo of Georgia (who I discussed in the S.E.C. Championship post) and Tony Jefferson of Oklahoma (113 Tackles and 2 Interceptions in 12 Games this season to go with 8.0 career Sacks and 18.0 Tackles for Loss during his three years with the Sooners) should also be available on Day 2 of the Draft. But when I think of who a solid replacement for Clark would be, one prospect in particular comes to mind: D.J. Swearinger of South Carolina.

Although Swearinger has been a bit overshadowed during his career by the stellar play of S.E.C. Safeties like Elam, Rambo, Georgia’s Shawn Wiliams, L.S.U.’s Eric Reid, and Alabama’s Mark Barron and Robert Lester, he has nevertheless built a successful career for himself at South Carolina. A two and a half year starter with the Gamecocks (32 starts so far), D.J. has shown a nice ability to support against the run (150 Tackles over the last two seasons), and force Turnovers and big plays (3 Forced Fumbles, 2 Fumble Recoveries with 1 Touchdown, 6 Interceptions with 2 Touchdowns during the last three seasons).

The part of Swearinger’s game that I like the most however is his physical play on the back-end and his ability to deliver vicious hits to the opposition if they come anywhere in his area, just like Mr. Clark. The Gamecock Safety was actually suspended for one game for this hit right here against U.A.B. this past season (he also took a fumble back 65 Yards for a TD in the game too), and delivered a huge blow to Clemson’s Andre Ellington in the S.C./Clemson rivalry game. Probably the best Swearinger moment I can remember from this past season happened against Arkansas. After he was penalized on a horse-collar call, and a ticky-tack “hit on a defenseless Receiver” penalty on consecutive plays, Swearinger picked off a pass on the very next play and took it back 70 Yards for a Touchdown and gave a befitting “Eff You” to the refs when he threw the ball into the stands after he scored!

Sooner or later, the Steelers will need a physical and hard-hitting Free Safety to replace Clark when he eventually moves on into retirement or elsewhere. At least to me, Swearinger could maintain that forceful presence at Free Safety, and might be a mid-Round selection worth taking a chance on and developing.

Final Thoughts

The Steelers’ Brain Trust led by Colbert (Center) will hopefully lead another successful Draft process this April. Mandatory Credit: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Steelers need help on the Defensive side of the ball and must find a way to accumulate depth and find long-term starters at numerous positions as the veteran-laden unit continues to age.

Safety is a huge need, as is Inside Linebacker as well as Outside Linebacker. Plus, I am not particularly thrilled with Pittsburgh’s depth at Cornerback now. With Ike Taylor set to turn 33 and the average Keenan Lewis set to become an Unrestricted Free Agent after the season, I hope that the Steelers are able to find some competition for Cortez Allen and Curtis Brown. The Defensive Line could also use an infusion of youth as well to make up for the future losses of Brett Keisel and Casey Hampton, and push Ziggy Hood and Cameron Heyward as well.

I guess I will close this analysis by saying that whether it is Ogletree, Elam, etc., the Steelers just need to find play-makers and difference-makers on the Defensive side of the ball. Thus, with their current needs in mind, I am sure that this will be a “Defense Heavy” Draft for Pittsburgh no matter who they inevitably select next April.

I know that a number of members of “Steeler Nation” have returned to the “LeBeau/Defense” Kool-aid bottle over the last two weeks, and they are welcome to their own opinions’. Yet as nice as the wins have been to watch, Pittsburgh’s inconsistent and less than stellar pass rush has continued to make me quite uneasy when the Defense is on the field. Lost in all of the hype has been the glaring fact that Pittsburgh’s Defense has continued to struggle to pressure the opposing Quarterback, and have only recorded 1 Total Sack over their current 2-game winning-streak. As it stands, unless the Steelers’ pass-rush begins to improve against their more formidable foes down the stretch, the Defense might be in some serious trouble. Unfortunately, this weekend’s matchup against the Giants could be one of those instances.

The 2012 Pass Rush or Lackthereof

Harrison and the pass rush are needed badly this weekend. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE

The Steelers have had their fair share of issues when it has come to pressuring the opposition this year, and have been largely infrequent guests opponents’ backfields over their first 7 games. Whether it has been due to injuries, poor schemes, or just downright sub-par play, Pittsburgh’s pass-rush has been as non-existent as ever this season.

Overall, Pittsburgh’s Defense has only registered 12.0 Sacks on the year (T-24th), and have their 33 year-old Inside Linebacker (Larry Foote), and spot-starter/rotational player at Outside Linebacker (Jason Worilds) leading the team in the statistical category. The team’s $61.5 Million Dollar investment LaMarr Woodley has been largely ineffective (2.0 Sacks) due to his nagging hamstring. Plus, I am sure that it has not helped that one of the big reasons behind his past statistical success, James Harrison, has been injured as well and is playing like the recently returned from a knee injury 34-year old he is.

While the Sack numbers are low, the lack of any sort of pressure on a consistent basis has left Pittsburgh’s weak and injured Secondary exposed numerous times and ripe for the plundering by the opposition.

Have we seriously not forgotten about the complete carving administered by a fresh-off the neck injury Peyton Manning in Week 1? How about when Carson Palmer and the Raiders racked up 34 points and had ZERO punts in the 2nd Half in Week 3? Michael Vick with a go-ahead 17 Play 79 Yard drive that lasted 8:18 late in the 4th Quarter of Week 5? What about the 4th Quarter meltdown in Tennessee? You know, the game in which Ike Taylor was absolutely abused by Kenny Britt all night? Heck, the Redskins’ back-up pass-catchers were running free all Sunday long, and had acres of space at their disposal as “RGIII” stood like a statue for most of the game!

How the Giants Could Capitalize

The biggest reason why the Giants will be such a tough opponent for the Steelers’ Defense and their anemic pass-rush has to do with their Offensive Line’s performance this year. Much like Pittsburgh’s, New York’s six-man combination of Center David Baas, Guards Chris Snee and Kevin Boothe, and Tackles David Diehl, Sean Locklear, and Will Beatty have congealed, improved, and played well over the course of this season. In fact, after New York gave up 3 Sacks in their season opening loss to Dallas, the Giants’ Offensive Line has only surrendered 4 over their last 8 games. On the season, the Giants have allowed the fewest amount of Sacks (7), and the stat is even more incredible when one considers the fact that New York has attempted the 7th most passes (296) of any team in the League!

In addition to their ability to keep the pass-rush at bay, New York’s Offense will be at a decided advantage if they hold the Steelers’ pass-rush back because of Pittsburgh’s numerous issues in the Secondary. I tip my cap to the Steelers’ Secondary because without Troy Polamalu, they are at a decided disadvantage against most opponents, but still gave gutty performances over the last two weeks. Nevertheless, I still would really like to see is whether or not the members of Pittsburgh’s Secondary can step up their games’ against some tougher competition personnel-wise, not the likes of Ryan Whalen, Andrew Hawkins, Aldrick Robinson, Josh Morgan, an aging Santana Moss etc..

Watching starters Ike Taylor and Keenan Lewis try to contain Victor Cruz (52 Catches, 650 Yards, 7 TD’s) and Hakeem Nicks (26 Catches, 380 Yards, 1 TD) will be a difficult task in and of itself if there is little to no pass-rush. What I truly fear however is if Cortez Allen, Curtis Brown, Lawrence Timmons, and whichever Safety combo is healthy (Ryan Clark could be out & Troy Polamalu is), cannot adequately cover some of New York’s secondary pass-catchers like Domenik Hixon, Martellus Bennett, Rookie Rueben Randle, or even the big Ramses Barden. I am sure the Giants have seen how the Steelers’ Defense has been torched over the years when spread out and attacked with a quick and accurate passing game. If New York does go this route, and Manning can actually take his time in the pocket, no Defensive Backs or personnel in pass-coverage, no matter how good they are, can hold the Giants Offense off for extended periods of time.

Final Thoughts

I for one could not be happier to see this Defense face-off against the Giants this weekend, because we as viewers will be able to better gauge exactly how improved/not improved this unit actually is against a formidable foe. In addition, I am intrigued to see if there are any signs of life from the pass-rush, and continue watching how Harrison is responding on a week-to-week basis off of his injury. Pittsburgh might be a formidable Defense on paper, but I still have my reservations about this unit. They not only have displayed issues with accumulating Sacks and creating pressure, but they also have had their problems taking the ball away (7 Takeaways T-31st), and getting off of the field on 3rd Downs (44.05% Opp. Conv. 28th). I just hope that the pass-rush will bring their “A Games’” this weekend to help the Defense improve in these aforementioned areas. Otherwise it will be a long day if Eli Manning is allowed to scan the field and pick apart Pittsburgh’s inconsistent and injured Secondary with his bevy of pass-catching weapons.

Chime in Readers: Will the Steelers’ pass-rush show up this weekend? Will it show up at all this season? Will the Defense step up against a more formidable foe?
