It’s no myth or misconception to say that Steeler Nation really hoped that newly retired Steeler, Hines Ward, would join the team in some sort of coaching or mentor role. I too hoped that Ward would rejoin the team and mentor a young receiving core that still needed to learn more about the game – both on the field and off (I’m looking at you Mike Wallace). But, as these things tend to go, a man with more charisma than Sean Connery and the knowledge of the game he once played joins the ranks of those before him – football analyst.

Ward joins the giant peacock of sports by signing a contract with the NBC Sports Network. Turns out his recent appearance during NBC’s Super Bowl Pre-Game extravaganza was just tryout. Guess the Nielsen ratings took a spike when those pearly whites flashed on the screen (he can also thank Dancing With the Stars). Ward will become part of the Sunday Night Football pre-game show as well as becoming a studio analyst for college football and appear on the weekday Sports Talk news show. I hope he can add some personality to the already snorefest of Dan Patrick, Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison and the holier-than-thou Bob Costas. Patrick can be funny at times harkening back to his old days on ESPN’s Sports Center. But the other two in studio gentlemen instill about as much excitement and mediocre opinion as my dog does while I watch him circle to take a leak. He certainly brings more ‘accomplishments’ to the table. I just hope he doesn’t hold back when it comes to analyzing players and teams each Sunday Night.

I’m happy for the guy, and I hope it goes well for him. I honestly didn’t want him to head back to his roots in Georgia – forever to be lost to the ether of positional coaching in the NCAA. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I doubt anyone will be hot to trot over Ward leaving the prime time football cameras to pursue coaching like they are with Cowher every season. But, he should be an enjoyable commodity for years to come.

He’s staying in the public eye. And, that’s something all of Steeler Nation will be happy to see.

Looks like Terry Bradshaw can’t believe it either.

In the wake of the Pittsburgh Steelers crushing defeat by the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday, Steeler Nation is awash in a sea of negativity. The Steelers are 6-3 and in good shape for a playoff berth yet the general feeling is that Sunday’s loss basically ended the season. While I advise you to put away the knives and remove your belts and shoelaces, I’d be less than truthful if I didn’t admit to believing the doomsayers speak a bit of truth. Two teams in 43 years have won the Super Bowl as a Wild Card and, let’s face it, anything less than a repeat makes this year a failure.

Over the past couple days, there’s been good news, bad news, and so-so news out of the Black and Gold.

In the good news category, Mike Tomlin is clearly upset with our shitacular special teams and has set about making changes. He sent a clear message to others on that unit by cutting backup LB Arnold Harrison. In a way, I feel sorry that Harrison is the fall guy for our kickoff fiascos as he’s been on the team since 2005, battling his way back from a torn right ACL in 2006 and then tearing his left in 2008. They’ve signed Donovan Woods off the practice squad to replace him. Woods is supposedly a good special teams player but we’ll have to see about that. Personally, I think they need to bite the bullet and put starters like Brett Keisel or Lawrence Timmons out on coverage. Tomlin has also indicated Mike Wallace will see more action returning punts as preseason sensation Stefan Logan has been a bust so far.

In so-so news, Troy Polamalu is listed as “questionable” for Sunday’s game. Considering Tomlin is a filthy liar, I wouldn’t put much stock in anything he says regarding injuries. For what it’s worth, they’re saying this injury was a PCL strain, not a re-aggravation of the MCL sprain that kept Troy out earlier this season. Regardless of how much faith you put in these medical reports, it seems likely Troy will play again in 2009. Although his reckless style of play has to make you wonder how long he’ll be back before he’s injured again. One thing is for certain, the Steelers would be insane to let him play in this week’s demolition of the hapless Chiefs.

Finally, in the bad news, all this talk of injured knees and lousy special teams has covered for a truly terrible performance by our offense. Ben Roethlisberger has owned up to playing a bad game but I think he was put in position to fail. He threw 40 passes, was sacked 4 times, and scrambled out of danger twice. For those keeping score, that’s 46 throws against a measly 18 runs. I’m sorry but that is abysmal playcalling. When you look at our three biggest wins of the year (San Diego, Denver, and Minnesota), Rashard Mendenhall had over 150 yards in two of them. The Minnesota game was decided by a pair of Pick Sixes.

In other words, anybody who tries to argue Bruce Arians’ Flying Circus is working this season has not been watching these games. Yes, Ben is an excellent quarterback. Yes, we have good receivers. However, we are not the Patriots or the Colts. The Steelers simply cannot win at a high level by putting the ball in Ben’s hands and saying, “Here, do it all by yourself.” Arians needs to be called out for his game plans and made to realize we are winning in spite of him, not because of him. Until some balance is returned to this offense, I foresee some frustrating days ahead.

Frustrating for me. Frustrating for you. And frustrating for Terry Bradshaw.

I don’t want to like Chad Johnson. But sometimes, I can’t help it.

This year, HBO featured the Cincinnati Bengals on their Hard Knocks series. The show was pretty much mind-numbingly with two exceptions. The first being whenever owner Mike Brown or his equally clueless daughter (who, inexplicably, negotiates contracts) were demonstrating how ineptly they run their franchise. The other was whenever Ochocinco had his weekly spotlight, such as in the clip above. I defy anybody to watch that and tell me he doesn’t come across as one of those rare athletes who is legitimately funny and entertaining like Shaquille O’Neal.

I don’t want to like Chad Johnson. But sometimes, I can’t help it.

Recently, I was offered the chance to review a copy of Chad’s new book, Ochocinco What Life and Football Have Thrown My Way. I agreed because I needed to know if I was losing my mind. I needed to know if the Chad on Hard Knocks was an optical illusion or a figment of my imagination. As a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I needed my hate back.

The book begins with a highly detailed description of Ocho’s luxurious Florida mansion. Then it began describing all the expensive cars parked in the driveway of this luxurious Florida mansion. Now, I don’t begrudge anybody their success but when you go out of your way to stress exactly how well off you are, it either means you’re extremely shallow or have a small penis. I began to regret my decision to review this book.

After a few pages devoted to his fleet of high-priced automobiles, Chad mentioned the car he has up in Cincy. It happens to be a Dodge Charger painted to look like the General Lee. Of course, it says “General Ochocinco” across the top but let’s give a brother a break. That’s exactly what I would buy if I could run, jump, catch, and do the Riverdance. It’s still really cool. And just like that, I was sucked right back in.

I don’t want to like Chad Johnson. But sometimes, I can’t help it.

The rest of the book is a unique combination of a biography and The World According to Chad. At 272 pages, they easily could have lopped about thirty pages off that total. Chad has a tendency to chew his cabbage not just twice but six or seven times. Some things, such as the rumor he punched a coach during halftime of the 2005 Steelers-Bengals playoff game, must really bother him because he bring it up in order to deny it almost every chapter.

Which brings me to the best part of the book. Even though it’s Chad’s story, he invited others to present their points of view. Some might add that to the category of “padding” but I thought it made for the most interesting reading. For example, another of Ocho’s frequent protests is he doesn’t want to hurt/offend anybody, he just wants to have fun. This is why he’s so proud of his elaborate touchdown celebrations (in fact, he devotes an entire chapter to them), including the one where he put on a “Future Hall of Famer” cape. Well, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis didn’t appreciate that antic one bit and I commend Chad for printing his no punches pulled rebuttal.

Actually, in many ways Lewis is as much the star of this book as his star receiver. You may not have heard but earlier this week, Chad was planning to send a case of mustard to the Steelers. Lewis got wind of it and put the kibosh on his plan, because you don’t step on Superman’s cape and you don’t piss off the Steelers D. Anyway, the book is full of stories similar to that, with Ocho playing the mischievous kid and Marvin channeling Cliff Huxtable Those two should really have their own sitcom.

At this point, I’m sure some of you are wondering why a Steelers fan, perhaps one still not won over by Ochocinco’s personality, would be interested in this book. For one, Chad has a lot of choice criticisms of the Bengals organization (this was written back when he was desperately trying to get traded). Most notable are his comments regarding the decision to fire Dick LeBeau, who was their head coach early in his career. Secondly, Chad shares a lot of observations about the NFL in general, including several Steelers. His spirited defense of the “NFL’s Dirtiest Player” Hines Ward may surprise you. He also has a number of great Joey Porter quotes for those of us who miss seeing Peezy in the Black and Gold.

No mentions of Ike Taylor, though. I guess it makes sense, since yet another of his beaten horses is nobody can cover him (ever) and he’s always open (always). He rationalizes his poor season last year by claiming the Bengals QBs were told not to throw him the ball as punishment for trying to get traded. I guess that’s one way of looking at things but I still would’ve liked to see him explain why Face Me Ike always seems to shut him down. Hey, there’s no shame in being stopped by the Steelers.

Whatever you think about Ochocinco, this book won’t do much to change those feelings one way or the other. Every chapter, you get a brief glimpse of the real Chad, the funny likable personable guy you saw in that video clip. The Chad who had a long hard road to the NFL from humble beginnings raised by his grandmomma in Liberty City, Florida. When you’re raised the same place they set a Grand Theft Auto game, you know you’ve come far. It’s just too bad he feels the need to switch back into the Ochocinco character so frequently.

Still, I can’t help liking Chad Johnson. But I still want him to suck against the Steelers.

Every spring, there comes a wonderful day when the Pittsburgh Steelers announce their schedule for the upcoming season. I have a ritual where I first scan the list for any of our most hated rivals (Patriots, Iggles, Cowboys). Then I go through each game and mentally evaluate my team’s chance of victory. Of course, this is not an exact science as my preliminary prediction of going 15-1 in 2009 demonstrates.

I bring this up because when I saw the Minnesota Vikings on this year’s schedule, I immediately marked that one down as a W. At the time, the Vikings were being quarterbacked by Tarvaris Jackson. The only time Jackson was able to drive the team downfield was when the ball was snapped, he took three steps backwards, handed it off superstar RB Adrian Peterson, and stood there as Purple Jesus bulldozed over the opposing defense. I figured the Steelers would feast on this one-dimensional team.

Enter Brett Favre. Favre had retired for third or fourth time (I lost track) but this time it appeared he really had thrown his last NFL interception pass. Unfortunately, as spring turned to summer and summer into fall, the Favre Saga took on more TWISTS than a M. Night Shyamalan movie. Until, finally, the dust settled and Favre was the new quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings.

I should have known better. I am a movie buff, after all. What is the first rule of the horror movie? The bad guy never dies! Every time you think they’re finished, they pop back up to menace the nerdy kid with a heart of gold and big-breasted yet misunderstood cheerleader one last time before the credits roll. And for those of us who are sick and tired of Favre and his wishy-washy attention whoring ways, the entire Favre Saga was nothing if not a horror movie.

Which reminded me, Halloween is right around the corner. I was going to do a post suggesting appropriate costumes for our favorite Steelers. You know, LaMarr Woodley as the Invisible Man, Santonio Holmes as Dirk Diggler, Skippy Reed as Lindsay Lohan. Then I watched Friday The 13th and it dawned on me, Favre doesn’t just remind me of Jason Voorhees. He IS Jason..

Let’s look at the ways each have come back from the dead. In the original film, Jason doesn’t really “die” but he is supposedly already dead, having drowned as a child attending Camp Crystal Lake. In Part II, the stupid oversexed pot-smoking teenagers think he’s dead after driving a machete though his shoulder, only to watch him come back for one final surprise. In Part III, an axe to the head fails to stop him, although it does leave him with a splitting headache. Thank you, I’m here all week. The Final Chapter (an underrated gem, in my opinion), he’s once again hacked with his own machete. Jason Lives sees him sort of drown, although his dramatically clenched fist in the final shot indicates more mayhem to come. Jason Takes Manhattan sees the toxic waste in a New York sewer fail to stop him. Next time, try using the “food” sold at one of Manhattan’s toxic hot dog vendors. You get the point.

Now let’s look at Favre’s “resurrections.” He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, who allowed him to waste away on the bench. He was saved when the Packers traded for him. He eventually took over as their starter, leading them to their best record in 30 years. He also developed an addiction to painkillers and alcohol. Vicodin is a bad drug, folks (except when it’s really really good). Checking into rehab was, in essence, another comeback. Years later, Hurricane Katrina blew through Mississippi, causing extensive damage to his home. Favre seriously contemplated taking a year off so he could be there to shake their hands, to be there to share the land, I’m talkin’ ’bout together now! He played anyway.

That year, the Packers took Aaron Rodgers with their first round pick. Thus began the annual “Will he retire?” idiocy. In 2007, Favre had one of his best seasons ever, leading the Pack within a game of the Super Bowl. The Packers rewarded him by jettisoning him in favor of Rodgers. Favre announced his retirement. Two months later, he un-retired to play for the New York Jets. Those toxic sewer hot dogs weakened Favre as a hot start quickly fizzled into a disappointing injury-plagued year. The Jets released Brett and he retired again. This time, he stayed on the shelf for close to four months before un-retiring to suit up for the Vikes.

By my count, Jason has come back from the dead something like fourteen times. Favre, on the other hand, has made around eight figurative or literal comebacks. Advantage Voorhees. However, Brett has also made 271 consecutive starts. Jason has only made 11 movies, 12 if you count that hideous Freddy Vs. Jason crapfest. Advantage Favre. Hopefully when Friday the 13th comes this Sunday the 25th that advantage won’t be enough to deny the Steelers the victory I predicted for them many months ago.

In 1985, the Chicago Bears won their one and only Super Bowl Championship. One of the stars of that team was a 370 pound defensive tackle named William “The Refrigerator” Perry. In addition to playing on one of the greatest defenses of all-time, Perry was also used as a fullback in short-yardage situations. He even scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl. The combination of his size, affable personality, and versatile play transformed The Fridge into a pop culture icon.

Also during the 80′s, one of the most popular afternoon cartoons was G.I. Joe. Until Hollywood decided to bastardize my childhood by turning it into a crappy movie, G.I. Joe was among my all-time favorites. I read the comic books, watched the show, and bought every toy that came out. I even sent away for the figures you could only get via mail order.

One of those figures was a special edition William “The Refrigerator” Perry. Yes, The Fridge was a member of G.I. Joe. As you can see by the picture above, they did a pretty nice job of capturing his likeness. Although I was always perplexed by his choice of weapons, which appears to be a football on a stick. I realize Cobra was a gang of idiots who couldn’t shoot straight but is the best way to combat laser fire really a FOOTBALL ON A STICK!?!?

Anyway, this got me to thinking. If G.I. Joe came out today and they wanted to make a football player their newest recruit, who would they pick? Of course, I’m sure they’d choose a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers because that is by far the most popular and successful team in the NFL. The only question is who?

Let’s take a look at some possibilities:

Ben Roethlisberger – If you’re familiar with the G.I. Joe cartoon, you know that every episode followed pretty much the same pattern. The good guys were cruising along, then the evil Cobra would strike back, backing the Joes against a wall. Then, as time was about to expire on the free world, the Joes would mount a furious comeback to deal their enemy a decisive defeat.

Who’s better at engineering a comeback than Big Ben?

The only downside to this choice is the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. I’d be a little worried about Ben getting fresh with some of his fellow Joes.

Dick LeBeau - G.I. Joe is America’s daring, highly trained special mission force. As a military outfit, they need strong leadership to create strong plans of attack. Who devises more ingenious strategies than Dick LeBeau?

Fast Willie Parker – He’s strong, fast, and extremely tough. Although the one downside is he’d probably keep getting caught behind the enemy line.

James Harrison - I’m not sure what physical skills he’d bring to the table besides the obvious of being a world class athlete. I’d just pick him ’cause he scares the bejeezus out of me. I don’t know for a fact but I’d wager he has “BMF” stamped somewhere on his wallet.

Casey Hampton - Somebody has to carry the heavy artillery. Although I do worry about him making it through boot camp. If he thought Mike Tomlin liked wind sprints, wait until he met his drill instructor. Hey, I’ve seen Full Metal Jacket.

However, all the Joes had really cool codenames like Tripwire, Mainframe, Chuckles, and Quick Kick. You can’t deny “Big Snack” would be a fitting addition to that list. I also considered Skippy Reed for this slot but I seriously doubt he’d be able to pass the V-D test.

Now, making a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers a member of G.I. Joe may seem like a crazy idea. And maybe it is. But I am on the right track. You see, during the 80′s, every Joe figure came with a card that gave their biographical information. One of the figures was said to hail from Pittsburgh. What was his codename?
