With the shakeup of the offensive line this week and the OTA’s starting next week, Steeler Nation is stoked with anticipation to get a peak at what this new Todd Haley offense is going to look like. But one question still remains, where will Mike Wallace fit into all this? Wallace has yet to sign his 1 year tender after lasting through the entire free agency period and not getting picked up by another team. Everyone from Rooney to Colbert and possibly the guy that washes the game jerseys for the Steelers has said that it is a priority to sign Wallace to a long term deal. That hasn’t happened either. With OTA’s starting on Tuesday, Wallace will most likely not show as he has stated he won’t sign his tender until he “absolutely has to.” Will this Wallace drama cover the entire upcoming offseason activities or is it no big deal? (more…)

What We Learned This Week in the NFL Offseason:

Peyton officially announced as Broncos new QB

Tebow traded to NY Jets twice in one day

Goodell drops the hammer on the Saints

Hines Ward officially retires as a Steeler

Rooney adamant about wanting to keep Wallace despite reports he wants big money

Steelers are among other teams proposing rules changes for next season

The Steelers lose their first big name to free agency

It seems as though March Madness this year can also refer to the NFL offseason. What a crazy month it has been so far. In one week, Peyton Manning was announced as the newest Denver Broncos quarterback for an obscene amount of money, Timmy Tebow was traded to the Jets twice in the same day, the Saints lost their head coach for a season among other punishments from Goodell for Bounty-Gate, and Hines Ward officially retires and earns Steeler For Life status. (more…)

Super Bowl XXX was the first time the Pittsburgh Steelers lost a championship game in their illustrious history. Their opponents were the Dallas Cowboys. Troy Aikman was the victorious quarterback. The Steelers started off slow in that game but mounted a furious comeback that was ultimately undone by one too many mistakes.

Fifteen years later, the Steelers found themselves in Super Bowl XLV. Ironically, it took place at Cowboys Stadium. Troy Aikman was there calling the game. And, once again, the Black and Gold staged a valiant comeback which was ultimately thwarted by too many miscues.

You can only dig so many holes. Eventually, you run out of shovels.

The Steelers lived dangerously throughout this year’s playoffs. Gave up a huge lead to Baltimore. Ben Roethlisberger played lousy against the Jets. Yet they found a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Against the Green Bay Packers, they tempted fate once too often.

This performance was pretty much a Cliff’s Notes version of everything which had led to this point. The Steelers went into halftime staring at a 21-10 deficit. Ben made a handful of plays but played poorly overall. The secondary, a question mark all season, broke down at inopportune times. And if this game doesn’t signal the end of the Bruce Arians era, he must have pictures of Art Rooney II cross-dressing at a Lady Gaga concert or something.

I said in my game preview the Steelers would be well-served to emphasize the running game like they did against New York. On their second possession of the game, Pittsburgh lined up with David Johnson at fullback and ran the ball down Green Bay’s throat. Then, on 3rd and 1, Arians went with his beloved empty backfield and the pass fell incomplete. They wouldn’t return to a consistent ground attack until the second half.

Backed up at their 7, Arians dialed up a deep bomb to Mike Wallace. He was open but Ben’s arm was hit on release and the duck was picked by Nick Collins. Collins returned it for a touchdown. A few drives later, Ben tried to squeeze a pass to Wallace between two defenders. Jarrett Bush snatched the ball away from Flash for the second costly turnover of the half.

Why were we throwing so much against what is generally considered the strength of the Packers defense? WHO KNOWS. Why does the rain in Spain fall mostly on the plain? WHO KNOWS. Do androids dream of electric sheep? WHO KNOWS.

I’m taking nothing away from the Packers. They played like the Super Bowl veterans while Aaron Rodgers earned a well-deserved MVP award. This game could have been uglier than Fergie’s outfit during that debacle of a halftime show if not for the Packers young receivers repeatedly dropping his perfect passes. So to say the Steelers beat themselves would not be fair because most of those drops would’ve went for long gains.

In a happier alternate reality, Wallace would have been the MVP after being left wide open time and time again by a badly banged up Green Bay secondary playing without Charles Woodson. Ben’s throws were routinely off-line, missing a streaking Wallace on a sure touchdown early in the third quarter being perhaps the most egregious of his errors. Every game has bounces that go one way or the other. The outcome hinges on who makes the plays when they need to be made. When the chips were down, Rodgers made the plays. Ben did not.

Neither did Dick LeBeau‘s defense. They didn’t play badly but they didn’t play particularly well either. Troy Polmalu was a total non-factor. They failed to generate a single turnover. And they wilted toward the end of the game, surrendering a 31 yard pass to Greg Jennings and a 21 yarder to James Jones when they desperately needed to get off the field. Granted, they eventually forced a field goal but by then the clock had been milked past the two minute warning while Green Bay’s lead had been upped to six points.

Despite all the errors, the proud Steelers did not go quietly right up to the final drive of the game. Although the game really turned when they rediscovered the running game in the second half and it allowed them to cut the 11 point deficit to 4. As the fourth quarter began, the Black and Gold had the momentum and were driving when Rashard Mendenhall was double-humped by Clay Matthews and Ryan Pickett and the ball popped loose. A lot of football was left to be played but that ultimately proved to be one mistake too many.

Congratulations to the World Champion Green Bay Packers. Also, a heartfelt thanks to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Losing the Super Bowl sucks. No way around it. But when you consider the adversity they faced this season, from the unfair persecution of their starting quarterback, to the injuries to key personnel, to being targeted by a corrupt commissioner and being victimized by blatantly biased officiating, there really is no way to consider this year a failure regardless of how the journey ends. So, thank you, Black and Gold, for playing with the heart of a champion even if you eventually fell short of that goal.

There’s always next year…

With Thanksgiving upon us, here are some things I’m thankful for, Pittsburgh Steelers-style.

I’m thankful for: Charlie Batch

The first month of the season could have been a real mess thanks to the ridiculous suspension of Ben Roethlisberger. It could have been an even bigger mess when Dennis Dixon went down with an MCL injury. But Chaz stepped in and guided the Steelers to within 50 seconds of an undefeated start.

I’m thankful for: Skippy’s wooden leg.

Jeff Reed forgot one important fact; he’s a kicker. Kickers are like umpires or little children, the best ones are those you hardly know are there. Nobody wants to hear from a kicker, especially when it has to do with contract complaints or restroom rage. But when he hits 90% of his FGs, there isn’t much you can do. So while his stunning ineptitude only really cost the Steelers one game (Ravens), it’s nice to finally be rid of the Heatmiser once and for all.

I’m thankful for: Sean Kugler and Al Everest

My doctor certainly appreciates Everest’s work in keeping my stress level from going through the roof on every kickoff/punt like it did last season. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot less of Captain Faircatch (Antwaan Randle-El), too. As for the Kugler, this offensive line pretty much defines the term “patchwork.” And yet everybody seems to be playing up to their ability or surpassing it. An extra drumstick for both.

I’m thankful for: the 5th round pick we got for Santonio Holmes

Thankful we didn’t just give him away for free. Yeah, he was an idiot. And, yeah, I’d rather have Mike Wallace. But it’s pretty clear ARE and the rookies aren’t the same as having both Holmes and Wallace. Watching ‘Tone make big play after big play for the Jets this year annoys me to think we gave up such a talent because of some phony stance on player morality. And for such a bargain basement price!

I’m thankful for: Drunk college girls

At the risk of turning this into the NPC version of KissingSuzyKolber’s hilarious Sex/Fantasy Football Mailbag, let’s remember the best part of college; random hook-ups. Yes, even us dorks who went to CMU had fun (thank god for slutty Pitt girls). Of course, the great tragedy of collegiate debauchery is while the women are loose, they don’t really know what they’re doing until they’re much older. That’s why everybody loves a cougar.

So let’s give thanks that when Ben decided to get his freak on, he did it with a drunk sorority girl wearing a DTF name tag. Whether she used teeth or can’t control her gag reflex, we’ll never know. But whatever she did was so lousy, not one single drop of semen was found in the bathroom, on her clothes, or anywhere on her person. Because we know if that pious witch-hunting D.A. had even a microscopic amount of evidence, Big Ben would be sitting at home right now preparing for his trial instead of leading us on our climb up the Stairway To Seven

I’m thankful for: Roger Goodell’s stunning lack of ambition

Let’s rejoice that the Ginger Dictator doesn’t harbor any political dreams or national ambitions. Can you imagine this man as a Senator or even our President? If this country were run as shoddily and haphazard as he runs the NFL, we’d be France.

I’m thankful for: Some horse in some stable somewhere

That horse’s great-great-great granddaddy won a race. And because he won that race, Art Rooney was able to start a football team. Sure, I don’t always agree with what they do but would you rather have Dan Snyder or Mike Brown? When you look at all the idiot owners in the NFL, we’re truly blessed to have such a great family steering the ship lo these many years.

And finally, I’m most thankful for:

Pittsburgh has a long history of athlete-endorsed food products. There were Louis Lipps‘ uber-delicious Lippsmacker cookies. Bubby Brister had the Bubby Bar. Not to be outdone, Mario Lemieux countered with his unfortunately named Mario Bun. I even remember Terry Bradshaw Peanut Butter. My mother claims it was the only PB I’d accept with my J back when I was a wee lad.

I’ve been a diehard Steelers fan a loooooong time.

City of Champions Cereal is the newest entry on that list. The box, featuring Hines Ward and Max Talbot on alternate sides, will be available exclusively at local Giant Eagle stores in mid November. For the out-of-towners, you can also order this fine product directly from the PLB Sports website beginning November 9th. Heck, order some Big Ben Beef Jerky while you’re at it. You can never have enough beef jerky.

Now, let’s get down to the reason I’m giving PLB Sports this free publicity. First, they’re a well-respected company probably most famous for producing Flutie Flakes. And more importantly, they’re having a contest. Everybody knows I love a contest.

Anyway, PLB Sports will be having a press conference on November 24th to promote City of Champions Cereal. The are giving YOU a chance to attend this press conference. Why is that a prize?

How about because both box boys, Hines and Max, will be at this press conference. Live and in person. And you are guaranteed to receive a box of cereal autographed by both of them! In addition, Hines and Max have a reputation of being two of Pittsburgh’s nicest athletes so, time permitting of course, you’ll get a chance to have a few moments of face time with them after the press conference is over.

Unfortunately, there will be no guessing of a score to win this awesome opportunity. PLB Sports is running the contest themselves, I am merely a humble messenger. If you’d like to enter, first make sure you’re either in Pittsburgh or able to get to the ‘Burgh on November 24th. Mooch off your relatives if you have to, that’s what they’re here for.

All the official rules and legal mumbo jumbo can found here. Once you know you can make it, there are two ways to enter the contest. You may enter both ways, but only ONCE each.

1. Send an email to info@plbsports.com with the headline (City of Champions Cereal). The entrant should write their name, age, telephone number, and how you found out about the Contest.

2. Follow PLB Sports on Twitter (@plbsports) and send them a reply which states “enter me in the contest #cityofchampions”

The contest will run from today until November 19th so get those entries in! PLB has generously extended me the chance to cover the press conference so, work permitting, I may be there to fulfill my bloggy duties. In fact, I feel a cold coming on as we speak. Hope to see you there!
