Rashard, Reed, and Redemption.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the San Diego Chargers once again Sunday night by a final score of 38-28. The thousands in attendance and the millions watching at home had to be absolutely tickled pink at the effort put forth by the Black and Gold. And I’m not just referring to the armbands, shoes, and special edition Terrible Towels worn yesterday in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Despite a brutal fourth quarter which turned a blowout into a nail-biter, this was by far the team’s best showing this season.

Let’s start with Rashard Mendenhall. Steeler Nation has been tough on Rashard, I’ve been tough on Rashard, Mike Tomlin has been tough on Rashard. Two nice plays against Chicago had been the grand total of his meaningful output as a pro. Not anymore. Mendenhall rumbled for 165 yards on 29 carries and two TDs. He doesn’t have the darting elusive style of Willie Parker but he’s more in the mold of Barry Foster (for you older fans), an explosive power runner. He showed a quick burst getting through holes and then got loose on several long gains by breaking through would-be tacklers. I particularly loved his physical play, lowering his shoulder when being tackled and absolutely PANCAKING blitzing linebackers on passing plays.

We also have to give it up for the oft-criticized offensive line. They opened up huge holes for the running game and provided plenty of time for Ben Roethlisberger (23/33 for 333 yards) to throw the ball. In fact, the 3 sacks they gave up wouldn’t have happened if Ben threw the ball in a timely fashion. I hope everybody noticed how when the line takes a holding penalty or gives up a sack, 90% of the time it’s when Ben drops back, surveys the field, then decides to run around like a maniac instead of throwing it away. Anyhow, Chris Kemoeatu was an absolute beast out there while Max Starks, no doubt stocked up on antibiotics and hoping to impress Tila Tequila, squashed Shawne Merriman all game long.

Through the first three quarters of play, this game looked like a laugher. At halftime, the Chargers had only 7 minutes of offensive possession. By the third quarter, they only produced a little over 100 yards of total offense. Their supposedly fearsome running back duo of LaDainian Thomlinson (15 yards rushing) and Darren Sproles (16 yards receiving) were non-factors. All seemed right in the world.

After three quarters of dominance, it happened again. Toward the end of the quarter, Philip Rivers engineered a thirteen play 79 yard drive, ending with a 3 yard TD pass to Antonio Gates. The Chargers went to a no-huddle shotgun formation and the Steelers decided to blitz almost every play. I don’t know if our linebackers have lost a step or if our new CBs are slower than last year’s but once again they didn’t come close as Rivers picked them apart.

Then came the fourth quarter or as Steeler fans now know it, “The Nightmare Time.” Stefan Logan fielded a punt while surrounded by approximately 37 San Diego players which is like an ant trying to survive an avalanche. He had the ball ripped from his bosom and ran back for a touchdown. At this point, I defy you to say you didn’t feel like you just got junk-punched by James Harrison.

To their credit, the Steeler offense marched right back down the field to answer with a TD of their own. Which should have salted the game away. All that was left to do was play some prevent, run out the clock, get off the field, and pack up your baby oil and speedo for wrestling tomorrow.

Which would’ve been fine if the Steeler defense hadn’t decided to take the REST OF THE GAME OFF. I’m utterly shocked at how one of the best defenses in NFL history last season can struggle so much this year. The Chargers scored two quick touchdowns to cut the lead to a single score. And when I say quick, I’m talking Usain Bolt speed. They went 67 yards on four plays. FOUR PLAYS!!! After being tricked by an on-side kick which Ryan Mundy all but dusted off and handed to the Chargers, they scored on a 54 yard drive in only 3 plays. THREE PLAYS! WHAT THE HELL!?!

The Steelers had no answer for Antonio Gates (9 catches 124 yards 2 TD). As I correctly guessed in my preview, Gates down the middle was going to be a problem because the secondary has struggled with that this season. Of course, Gates is a superstar and we’re missing Troy Polamalu but I didn’t think he’d be *that* much of a problem. Ryan Clark and Tyrone Carter handled him alright during the early part of the game. When SD went to shotgun formations, our safeties had to cover WRs, which left a LB to cover Gates. Lawrence Timmons is either way more hurt than he’s letting on or he stinks. He was beaten like a drum time and time and time again. It got so bad that toward the end of the game, Dick LeBeau had seen enough and asked Harrison to cover him. Now, Silverback was the Defensive Player of the Year but shouldn’t your scariest pass rusher, oh I don’t know, rush the quarterback?

In a blink of an eye, a 28-0 pasting turned into a 35-28 thriller. It felt like going to a Sandra Bullock movie and out of nowhere seeing Freddy Krueger disembowel some well-endowed blonde (who no doubt has mammograms on a regular basis, thanks to Breast Cancer Awareness). Luckily, the Chargers defense couldn’t stop a fly with a bazooka so the Steelers managed to drive the ball down the field while taking valuable time off the clock. Which set the stage for Redemption #2 as Skippy Reed booted what amounted to a game-winning FG from 46 yards out.

At this point in the season, I have no idea what to think about this team. This was a huge win because it kept the team confident and ensured Big Ben doesn’t get beer thrown at him on Monday Night Raw. The Patriots also did us a favor by defeating the overrated Ravens so we picked up a game in the AFC North standings. We’re not going to learn much next week when we play the Lions because, well, they’re the Lions. Although there were many many good things to take from this game, these fourth quarter collapses have gotten to be a nasty habit. A habit they need to break before it’s too late to redeem themselves.

Get ready to experience deja vu this Sunday night when the Pittsburgh Steelers face the San Diego Chargers. If it feels like we play the Chargers an awful lot, it’s because we do. In 2005, the teams played a memorable Monday nighter where Ben Roethlisberger was injured on the last drive of the game but the Steelers still managed to win thanks to a Skippy Reed FG with six seconds left. The 2006 season saw Pittsburgh travel out to San Diego following their bye week and crap the bed to drop their record to 1-3. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself. We got a break from the Bolts in 2007 but made up for it in 2008 by playing them twice. First, there was the infamous 11-10 game that should have been 17-10 if not for some of the most incompetent refereeing in recent history. Finally, we met in the Divisional round of the playoffs, scoring a decisive 35-24 victory behind a huge game from Fast Willie Parker.

This year, the Chargers roll into Heinz Field with a 2-1 record. Despite a significant decrease in production from the running game, their offense still ranked in the top third in the league last year. Philip Rivers posted the best passer rating in the NFL and has picked up right where he left off. Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers make for a dangerous WR combo and TE Antonio Gates is still one of the best in the business. Oft-injured RB LaDainian Thomlinson is showing the effects of having over 3,000 career touches and it’s anybody’s guess whether he’ll be suited up for the game on Sunday. Fortunately for the Chargers, little Darren Sproules is emerging as a game-breaking weapon.

The Steelers offense will also have a bit of a different look. FWP has been nursing a Turf Toe injury all week and his status is questionable. He’ll probably try to go but if the injury hampers him too much, the load will probably fall on the detail-oriented Rashard Mendenhall. Blocking for whomever carries the ball will be old friend Carey Davis, who was re-signed this week due to every fullback on our roster being out for the season. I would like to amend my previous post to say when nuclear holocaust strikes, all that will survive are reality show airheads and Carey Davis. Head coach Mike Tomlin has also indicated Limas “Butterfingers” Sweed will be riding pine in favor of veteran Shaun McDonald.

Defensively, the Chargers aren’t quit as intimidating as they once were. Their unit really missed Shawne Merriman who went down and out with a knee injury after one game last season. The Chargers dropped from 42 sacks in ’07 to 28 last year and with the reduced pass rush, the secondary suffered tremendously. Merriman has already missed time this season with a groin strain. See, I told ya those threesomes were a bad idea. Last I heard, he’s been practicing and is expected to give it a go this week which really makes a huge difference as far as their defense is concerned.

The Steelers will have no changes on defense, which is either good or bad depending on how you look at it. Tyrone Carter, James Farrior, and Lawrence Timmons will be the guys most responsible for dealing with Gates over the middle. If they play like they played last week, we’re in big trouble. Also, would it be asking too much for what used to be the most dominating defense in the NFL to generate a turnover or two? The team currently has 2 for the entire season to go along with a grand total of 4 sacks. Both those numbers have to improve or this is going to be a looooong year.

And you thought Ben Roethlisberger had problems with women.

The lady in the above clip is Tila Tequila. For those unfamiliar, Tequila is a former Playboy model who became very popular after posting music and semi-naked pictures on Myspace. Anyway, being a brazen attention whore evidently qualified her for a reality show on MTV. The show chronicled her search for true love with the unique angle being the fact she’s bisexual. Now, I never watched this show. Girls kissing other girls lost my interest about the time I discovered you can walk into any random frat party over at Pitt and find two drunk chicks making out because they’re feeling ignored.

Plus, I hate MTV and all their stupid “reality shows.” Believe me, folks, I have seen the future. After nuclear warfare has destroyed most of the life on this planet, the remnants of humanity will huddle together miles underground. Deep beneath the earth, society will still thrive while MTV will still be searching for, finding, and attempting to broadcast the lives of whatever somewhat attractive yet mind-numbingly vapid females are left in existence. And the cold, tired masses will stare at their picture-boxes as these women argue over whether burlap potato sack dresses are more fashionable than tattered drape skirts. They will call this show “The Vault” and you can bet there will be at least three seasons and there will be at least one spin-off. I hope I don’t survive the blast.

*Ahem* Tequila’s quest to find that one true love, be it male or female, was shockingly fruitless (Reality shows a scam? Perish the thought!) because she has recently been linked to San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman. And by “linked to” I mean “assaulted by.” Although like any case, there are two sides to every story. Except in this case, both sides are absolutely insane.

Tequila’s story sounds like a plot ripped off some late night skin flick on Cinemax. She claims he brought two (!) skanks home with him, then invited her to join in. Jeez, I’m intimidated by the idea of one woman and a blowup doll. Surprisingly, she wasn’t down with a little menage a trey so she reacted like any sane rational female would react: She tried to have sex with one of his friends.

At this point, Merriman was perturbed enough to choke her and throw her to the ground. How any man could be angry when he already had two women waiting for him in his bedroom is beyond me.

I’m sure you’ll be surprised to hear Merriman’s version is slightly different. His story is she came home drunk off her ass. Ever the gentleman, he intervened to prevent her from driving drunk. Gosh, we’ve found the Last Boy Scout! She then overreacted to his noble gesture and called the cops. Once they arrived, this drunk lady managed to concoct an elaborate story about physical abuse in order to gain publicity. Uh-huh.

I’m not saying I don’t believe him. The D.A. dismissed the case without even bothering to file charges. He probably didn’t want to get involved with either of these two nutcases. Still, I have no doubt she wasn’t the most reliable of witnesses. However, Merriman was busted by the NFL for steroid use a couple seasons back which is not exactly known to make people kind and gentle.

Anyway, I wanted to share this story with Steeler Nation to show as bad as the Roethlisberger case has been, it could have been a whole lot worse. In fact, Ben’s crazy lady is downright boring when you compare the two. By the way, Ben’s lawyers just lost a motion to have the case dismissed outright. This doesn’t mean he’s guilty or lend any more credence to her story. It just means the judge feels there is enough evidence to justify a lawsuit. Although I’m sure we’re all waiting to hear what exactly that evidence is.

I hope for Ben’s sake there isn’t a semen-stained cowboy hat in a closet somewhere.
